But you have to be like, hosting an anonymous ftp that gets slashdotted for that to happen. Also if you are sending spam they cut you off. They don't care about your computer, just their network. And if you muck around they cut you off at the switch level. Its as simple as that.

  3. Re:public health comparison? on Corporate Servers Spreading IE Virus [Updated] · · Score: 1

I think this would be a great idea. Make a set of rules that is fair for everyboydy. Then have a policing organization that checks to see if anyone is breaking the rules and cuts them off from the net. Sending spam? cut off. Site spreading viruses? cut off.

I see two problems. The first problem is that when the organization is created they will almost immediately cut off more than half of the net. Even though you and me might be left connected, the internet is pretty useless when you shrink its size dramatically. The people who are cut off probably wont bother to fix either, they'll just complain and complain expecting others to change instead of themselves.

The second problem is that there is no body to trust to run this sort of thing. Whoever is in charge will act in their own best interest. They will shut down web sites they don't agree with. They will allow spammers through who pay them off.

I like the net the way it is. Self policing. Look at slashdot as the example. Trolls want to take advantage of the system, so we have mod points. There is no law or police. The users work together to police each other and keep things running smoothly. Just like driving on a real highway, if you are careful you can avoid accidents no matter how bad the other drivers are. You just have to watch out when someone tries to crash into you on purpose. And even then you can still avoid them if you have a good car and good skills. Let those who do crash crash and let them clean up their own mess.

+10. That is the #1 problem in this country. Parents are not bringing up their children. They let public school and television do all the work. Instead of doing it themselves they just complain when pop culture and schools do a poor job.

Home schooling is no better either. What you get there are socially inept children who are coddled and shielded from the real world.

With college retention rates in the terrible state they are, it is obvious. Kids in the US are not being raised in a fashion which allows them to get by in the real world.

I think the #1 factor in this is that many families have both parents working, so nobody is home to raise the children. I'm no anti-woman type. It doesn't matter if the mom or the dad stays home, but it has to be one of the two. The other problem is of course, divorce. Divorce is happening because people who were raised poorly are getting married.

So, what prevents one parent from staying home? Money, duh. They need more money. The income of one person cannot support the family of 4 unless you have a really good job. The problem though, is not inflation or unemployment or anything, although those factors contribute. The problem is consumerism. People buy things for the sake of buying things. They buy things they don't need. *cough* SUVs *cough*. In general people are trying to live at a higher standard of living than they can afford.

Why don't they stop doing that and be more frugal/intelligent and raise their children properly? Corporations. Advertising. Consumerism. Big corporations are the root of all the trouble. This CD episode is simply a direct example of the larger problem. You can see it plain as day. Corporations trying to turn children into consumers. Consumers who will live above their means. Consumers who will allow their children to be raised the same way.

Google is the shining example of real Adam Smith capitalism at work. These megacorps need to change or leave in order to save our society.

Do you agree, or do you think I'm taking it too far? I actually think I may have... oh well. I'll submit anyway, no point in putting all that typing to waste.

  5. South Korea on Alternative Distribution Schemes For The MMO? · · Score: 3, Interesting

It is my understanding that in South Korea they have tons and tons more MMOs than we do. And while many of them are the same glorified chat rooms that we (don't) enjoy some of them are quite amazing. They have forced roleplaying. They have lists of characters predefined in a great story and you apply to take the roles of one you really like. People actually role play. This role playing cancels out the negatives of the treadmill style gameplay. Camping the fields for items != game. Heck, its as close as you can get to playing D+D without getting a bunch of bums in your friend's basement.

Keep in mind, this is just what I've heard about SK MMOs, I haven't actually seen a game like this. However, if it is untrue, it SHOULD exist. Set up an MMO world that plays like D+D. Heck, it could even be the freakin' forgotten realms. Then when people sign up either put them in parties or have them sign up in parties. Find a time each week they can play. For continuities sake make it so they have to start and stop at an inn. Hire dungeon masters to handle all the gameplay. It will be just like real D+D. You can make it episodic. And you will constantly come across people in other parties and your plots can intermingle. The mere presence of a DM assigned to your party will force role playing and remove treadmilling. Sure, you have to pay the DMs, but you can just charge more for the game since it is so high quality. And you can charge a per-campaign basis. You could even set a pricing model based on how often you want to play. If you want the DM there every night, more money. Once a week, average money.

Just take the idea and run with it. I've got to go to work :)

Also, watching fighting games can be awesome. Lots of ooohs and aaahs when people pull off crazy stuff or weird things happen.

Lastly its always fun to watch stuff like Mario Party because it's crazy go nuts.

Also, Dance Dance Revolution is the major exception. It was designed for spectators and players combined.

This pretty much forces users to take one of 4 paths
    1) reinstall
    2) buy software at the store
    3) switch to linux (same as 1 really)
    4) find another net connected computer

4 is easy for people like /.ers, but almost impossible for average folk, like my parents. 2 really shouldn't be encouraged, ever. 1 and 3 are daunting tasks for the average person also. So what your really doing by cutting them off is permanently cutting them off.

I think what has to be done is this. Don't cut them off entirely. Just force them to a page hosted by your ISP that helps them fix their problem. Provide some cleaning software. Maybe some harsh informative words. You know, that sort of thing. Until they fix up just route all the mail they spew out to /dev/null.
