  1. First of all on How Would You Design the Voting Technology? · · Score: 1

I would change the whole election system. But given that is a huge tangent, and we're only talking about ballots...

I would make the election ballot work like so.

First, give everybody an absentee ballot. Completely eliminate the need to go to the polls on election day. I mean, it's tradition or some crap like that, but seriously. What you do mail everyone who is able /registered to vote. Send them a ballot which is printed in such a way that counterfeiting is extremely difficult/impossible and where validity can be verified by a compute.

The ballot itself will use the SAT bubble in system. #2 pencil, fill in the bubbles. Everyone must mail/hand their ballots in by/on election day.

People too lazy to leave the house/get absentee ballots will vote. People wont counterfiet votes because they can't copy the ballot. Anyone who tries to send in a fake ballot can be fined/punished under the law for election fraud. The ballot is easy to read and fill out.

Fill in the bubble next to the presidential candidate you are voting for:
    (1) Cthulhu
    (2) Satan
    (3) Slick Willy

So, without changing the method of election, I believe this is the best way to do the ballot. Standardized nationwide.

  3. What I do on Simple Windows Backup to CD/DVD? · · Score: 1

First of all, don't use EZ CD Creator, it's crap. Get a copy of Nero Burning ROM. It is by far the best CD-burning application ever.

Next. Buy a hard drive. Create a FAT32 partition spanning the entire disk. I reccomend getting a high capacity low speed Seagate drive. SCSI if possible. Copy all of your files you want backed up, but don't change often onto this disk. Then take the disk out of your computer, put it in a Sea-Shield and lock it in a fire safe (which you should have anyway).

All of your changing files, documents that you are working on now, burn them to CD using Nero. Nero will make this very easy.

Now, let's say your hard disk crashes. Get a new disc. Install a clean windows on it. XP has the feature that lets you re-import all your settings really easily. Then just copy all the files from the drive and the latest cd back over.

If you can manage to keep the cd stuff to 1 disc you can use a CDRW instead of CDRs to save $$$. The chances of a hard drive that is unused crashing are so astronomically small, don't worry about it.

  4. Because.... on Sony Announces New PS2 Bundle · · Score: 2, Interesting

Most people who are big on consoles aren't so big on pcs. People who aren't big on pcs don't have broadband internet connections. Most people still have dial up, remember that. These people aren't going to get broadband just to hook the ps2 up to the net. And they aren't going to buy a net adapter they don't need. This is why Nintendo is going big with it's cube lan strategy instead of the net. Cube fans have cube fan friends, and cubes are small and portable, and gbas are plentiful. 4 cubes and 16 gbas with appropriate linkage with 4tvs are more fun with more friends than one guy in his house with one cube and the net.

  5. Community on WineX and the Future of Linux Gaming · · Score: 2, Interesting

I think the problem here is that the video game industry is contrary to the linux community in nature. The gaming industry creates closed source software and sells it in the store for money with a license for 1 machine. Linux is free as in beer and as in speech, and the software for it is usually the same.

The problem is that the same people who like those closed source games (myself included) also like linux. I think that if linux wants to establish itself as a gaming platform it needs games exclusive to itself that are as good or better than games for windows. More people need to start open source games/game engines for linux. One for every genre would be good.

When I look for video game hardware, especially consoles, the number one question on my mind is "what must-play games are here that aren't anywhere else". That's why I own a GameCube, and that why I use Windows to play games. XBoX and PS2 have good games, but the cube just has more games that I absolutely must play that aren't available for the pc or in the arcade, or on any other platform.

Conclusion: Make new open source games for linux. Make them high quality. Make them so good that people running windows will install linux just to play these games. Remember a really good free game is more popular than a slightly better $50 game. Counter-Strike is free, and I believe it's still #1.

    End Rant!

  9. If... on Car Makers Use Games As Virtual Test Drive · · Score: 1

If I'm looking to buy a sports car, which I hopefully will be doing some day, then maybe. I might for instance see a car in a video game that I did not know existed, or that I did not realize had high performance. Depending on the in game performance, and if that bears any relation to the real world performance, I might add the car to the list of cars to test drive.

Of course if I ever have enough money I'll just instantly buy the Ferrari 360 Spyder, and then who needs test driving.

Seriously though, games show off the looks of a car much better than the driving, unless you've got a really expensive simulator, in which case you can probably own multiple cars. There is probably at least a few people out there whou bought a car because it was their favorite in Gran Turismo. And if it means more quality racing games, let the auto manufacturers do whatever they want.

The game of risk is not that terrible, but it does suck in comparison to real board games. If you've ever played the likes of Puerto Rico or El Grande you will realize the lack of strategy in risk. American board games are too much based on luck. Sure, you can calculate the odds and make better decisions, but european board games have almost no luck involved in deciding the winner.
