Drugs are something inheretly bad. Piracy is just working around a misused system.

Unless you are some kind of Christian scientist, I presume you are only refering to recreational drug use. Regardless of whether or not you personally would choose to drink beer, smoke pot, eat magic mushrooms, etc. I don't see what gives you the authoritity to declare them 'inherently bad'. marijuana != heroin. Have you been listening to your politicians again?

It can be the best product ever, because it is geeky... I am not sure it will beat the iPod which has become a de facto standard.

Maybe it's just the iPod name that is becoming a standard with non-geeks. I expect lots of people think they have an 'iPod' made by Creative or Philips. The same way everyone now has these 'mp3 files' that are actually Windows media, AAC or Ogg.

There's stilly plenty of opportunity for iPod to lose its dominant position... especially since MS are in the market.

  8. Re:Only off-google advertsing a problem (for googl on Google Battles Fraudulent Clicks · · Score: 2, Informative

Say a scammer puts google ads on his website, then automates clicking on those ads, google then has to pay him for a portion of each click. This hurts google obviously.

Wrong. If Google thinks the clicks are genuine and pays out, that means Google gets paid by the advertiser. Google is never paying from its own pocket - the advertiser pays out and Google takes a nice cut of the price.

  9. Re:Illegal? on Google Battles Fraudulent Clicks · · Score: 1

Maybe my understanding of Google Ads is wrong, but wouldn't clicking those links take you directly to your competitor's site, thus denying your own site any business?

As for profiting via self-hosted scripts and whatnot, you're not. Your competitor is losing money, but you're not making any. There are no referral bonuses with Google Ads, to my knowledge. I could be wrong.

Sorry, you are indeed wrong - that made no sense at all.

There are 2 problems and one is much harder to solve than the other.

Firstly, if you sign up with Google Ads to show ads on your site then keep clicking on the ads to earn money, you are committing fraud. Google can probably detect suspicious patterns and throw you off before they pay you.

More tricky though: If you do a Google search that brings up your competitors ads, then you click on all their ads, you are costing your competitor money and using up their advertising budget. However, you haven't signed any acceptable use policy, so legally I don't see how you are doing anything wrong. All you are doing is visiting a public website and clicking on some links...

You make a good point that the people most likely to swtich to FF or Opera are already people that know what they are doing and wouldn't click 'yes' at the wrong moment.

But the whole point with some of these serious security holes is that you don't need to do anything wrong to get stung - the exploits can be activated simply by viewing a webpage. Possibly even if it's a html email in OE. It's a risk I'd rather not take.

That's a great idea, but I don't think it will ever happen. The BBC buys content from other TV companies just like any other channel does. They are stuck with broadcast rights restricted to the UK only. E.g. The Olympic Games

The quality isn't so amazing that it is without its critics, but it's been around for quite a while now. People are used to it. You don't get a nice big LP sleeve though :-)

However, with DVDs the quality isn't always so hot. I've seen some movies transferred horribly - artifacts everywhere. I've seen others that seem flawless. The format seems to bring added complications and trade-offs. I guess it's down to how much care the studio takes with the mastering.

But ultimately people to buy something they can touch. Something they can have a shelf full of, like all the books they've read over the years. And once they have half a shelf full, they don't want to have a new/different format on the other half!
