I have kept up on your plight over the years, reading various things about you. I have read your book and had a free kevin banner on my site. I truely wish you the very best and hope you are able to recover quickly.
You can find good info on the DirecTV hacking scene at PirateDen and HackP4.
A lot of these people are ligit suscribers to DirecTV service. They see this as a game, release files to the public and see what Dave counters with. Its your typical hacker scene, more about bragging rights than free TV.
That is not to say it hasnt caused a black market to spring up. There are lots of scammers out there trying to rip people off. Just search eBay or Google for HU 3m some time.
Untill Doom III I would agree with you. Quake, Quake 2 and Quake 3 were simply engines that Raven built good games on. (and hopefully American McGee now....)
But it seems id has renewed its intrest in creating great game play. Grahm was hired and is basically filling the void that Romero left behind.
Having seen the Doom III leak, I have hope. And if id lets me down in the single-player arena, I know that multi will rock and Raven will once again save the day.
I work for a company that did some work for TiVo. There is a simple explaination for what you describe. TiVo sometimes features infotainment on the main TiVo screen. These items sometimes contain alot of video. Instead of taking hours to download this info over the built in modem, they have some kind of deal with Discovery to broadcast the content late at night. If TiVo determines that you are not watching at 3:00 am, it will switch to Discovery and pick up the infotainment blob.
I am sure there are other bits of info it picks up on Discovery, but this is how it was explained to me.
Also for you people who think infotainement is lame, I discovered The Sapranos this way. I had heard of it, but never checked out. It was the feature infotainment one day, and I checked it out due to boredome. I now own the first 3 seasons on dvd and watch it every week. Its a cool feature, and when ever I'm bored I check it out.
You can ready it here. Chat contains David Kemper, Ben Browder and the guy that played D'Argo (cant think of his name) talking to the fans in #farscape irc.scifi.com.
Last year, SciFi signed a contract to pick up two more seasons of FarScape. This contract had an option to drop the 5th season. The show was wildly popular at the time and was SciFi's premier show.
Then SciFi picked up Startgate SG-1, FarScape started jumping around in its time slot. No one had a clue as to when it would be on. It started losing viewer.
SciFi announced to the FarScape crew they were not going to pick up the final season around the time they filmed the season finale for Season 4. Thus leaving the story on a cliffhanger.
Now for total speculation. It has been said that FarScape cannot be picked up by another channel due to SciFi's option on the 5th season. Basically SciFi has the rights to a season they are not willing to pay to produce. To further hinder a move, SciFi owns the broadcast rights to the first 4 seasons. What channel would want to pick up a show in its 5th season, if they cant run reruns of the first 4 as well.
In all it sucks. But you can help get the word out.
Adobe Photoshop has a.asp file that holds color imformation. When I was doing tech support for them we used to get calls all the time from Active Server Page developers that there asp scripts opened in Photoshop after install.
I attemped to switch to Linux a couple years ago. I picked up a copy of Red Hat and the No BS Guide to Red Hat.
It took me 3 days to get X windows running. Once I was up, I felt like I was in India trying to get directions to Moscow. I was so totally lost, but I stuck with it. Booting into Windows to read FAQs and the like.
Two weeks later I picked up a GeForce 256 and couldnt wait to play Quake 2 in Linux. My first linux gaming experience.
Coming from a windows world, I went with what I knew and shut the machine down and installed the new card. When I booted the machine up, instead of getting what I expected (some form of a messgae telling me new hardware was detected) I was introduced to Kernal Panic...
I was totally lost and didnt have a clue what to do. Finally I was faced with reisntalling the OS. I decided to go back to Windows where such simple things were simple and it doesnt take 3 days of searching & reading rude "stupid newbie" comments to accomplish simple tasks.
I havent been back since, although I have a friend that is trying to convince me to try Mandrake.... I wish he was aroudn when I tried installing that damn video card.
Tivo does this. The features you describe are avalible on a Tivo that is not activated. The service fee is for the extended features such two week guide. Suggestions. Thumbs Up & Down on shows.
Yes, you can get a lifetime activation TiVo that has no monthly fees. It is $250 more. It still follows your viewing habits and all the other things the monthly fee version does. If you buy a Tivo and do not activate the service you can still pause live tv and set it up to record by channel/time.
I disagree... In general if you monitor the people who make the discoveries, based on their actions you can apply the term Hacker to them. When you take a device or system that you know nothing about and completely take it apart and put it back together in an effort to understand how it works... isn't that the text book definition of hacker?
Read up on posts by people like p52, AOL9645 and RAM9999 on the den. They are explorers.
you know what would be interesting is doing just a tad bit of XSite Scripting for a kind of DDoS. Go now to all of your favorite messageforums that allow images in the post and use this address as the sorce for your image post... anyone who views it will get a broken image icon but the request will be made...
Doesn't anyone else see this as a win/win situation for the RIAA?
If the RIAA is allowed to DDOS people of the net, they can go after the big boy file traders.
If on the other hand, ISPs start blocking traffic based on DDOS attacks, the net gets devided into small islands of net and the whole file trading comunity is cut off from each other anyway.
Hell pretty soon we are going to have zoning laws similar to television anyway.
After playing NeverWinter for the entire weekend, trading out shifts with my wife to work on her level 9 fighter, I can honestly say I was totally ready to get to work and read Slashdot and the NeverWinter forums.
These computers do not ship with Microsoft Windows. They ship with an exciting new UNIX based Operating System (OS) named Lindows. This exciting new OS delivers the stability of UNIX with the ease of Windows and the ability to run most Microsoft programs. These computer systems are a perfect low cost alternative to computers preloaded with Microsoft Windows.
I like the low cost alternative line. Looks to to me like they are selling barebones boxes and including lindows to stop MS from starting some kind of legal war. Saying that Wal-Mart is encouraging warez.
This is all well and good for your average home user. But god I would hate to try to do technical support on this stuff. Could you imagine trying to explain to someone why their colors look off?
I have kept up on your plight over the years, reading various things about you. I have read your book and had a free kevin banner on my site. I truely wish you the very best and hope you are able to recover quickly.
Good luck to you.
God damn that is the most amazing post I have ever read... you are the man sir.

Nice style. I got into modding a few months ago and even got my wife tricking out her box.

yeah.. I see the point of the article. But my TiVo has cheat codes and that is why I love it.
Select-Play-Select-30-Select == god mode!

There is an effort to get a full page add in the New York Times to let SciFi know how lame they are. Check it out here.
