    well the screen is so small that even a stock ps1 chip will work well. unless the thing has tv out a 64-128 bit chip will be overkill

    anyone who has seen a gamecube disks knows what I meen The disks are small enough that if they could shrink the game cube down to palm size it will be one kick ass portible.

    on a more On topic note it says that it supports mpeg4 which makes you wonder if sony will come out with a burner that will let you burn you own movie disks, like thats going to happen, chances are sony will drop the mpeg4 deal for fear of possible lawsuits

    well, the issue isn't wether you can mod your xbox, the issue is distributing information about how to bypass copyprotection which is very illigal just ask the poor guy who made decss. You may not agree with the DCMA, but as for now its the law. If you realy want to fight it you have to do it the legal way, telling people how to do it then saying fuck the dcma isn't the way to go

    they removed that starting with winNT, win95-me are the only os's to have that problem and even then it wasnt a password to use the computer it was for networking. Win2k/xp dont have the same issue, but in all reality if you want a true password for your computer set it up in the bios, this will help stop someone from just booting knoppix and bypass all your security, but even then its not 100% secure couse all someone has to do is open the case and clear the cmos

    sata is just a form of IDE basicly while the interface has the possiblity of faster then what we have now the drives will still be basicly the same, when I said faster media, I ment something truely faster some kind of scsi or solid state,assuming someone comes out with one thats large enough for people to switch, I have 2 drives a 60 and 40 gig and im quickly running out of space. My next drive is going to be at least 120gigs, it would be silly for me and most people to get a 20gig drive for example for 1000$ just couse its solid state

    hard drives have gotten "faster and faster" as you put it, not nearly the same speed increes as cpus but still much faster my 60 gig dma133 can read a 40 meg file faster then then a 40 meg drive can even start seeking for the data, hell its at least 4 times faster then an old 8gig I have lying around. if your talking about the past few years I can agree with you as IDE caped out pritty much, unfortunetly the cost of moving to a faster media far out wieghs the "slowness factor" of IDE

    but, I kinda agree with the root issue, when I use winxp I run it in single user mode (i.e. as admin) why? you ask couse I want to be able to put files anyware I want, c:\downloads c:\shared d:\movies ect.. I dont want to fuck around with file permissions or having everything stuck in "My Documents" much less login as admin just to install software. I know what your thinking "But you'll get viruses up the ass", you know what for the past 8 years that I've been useing windows, I have never gotin a windows virus( knock on wood). When I run linux however I do have a user and root acount mostly couse many programs bitch if you try running as root

    there is lots of things left out like bitrate/quality comparisons, some codecs, like realvideo do a much better job at low bitrates (200k/s) then say xvid at the same bitrate.

    ati has opened up the drivers, well sorta, xfree 4.3 supports it out of the box, theres a few bugs like in tux racer you dont see the trail tux leaves behind, most of the cutting edge distros like redhat will setup everything for you, unless you have a odd ball mb like mine (ali agp8x) then you need to add the following lines to modules.conf

    alias char-major-10-175 agpgart
    options agpgart agp_try_unsupported=1

    make sure you put a newline after or it may complain at boot

    I remember when segas heat.net went live (96 I think) when you wanted to play a game there you had to sit thrue a 15 second fullscreen ad. It wasnt that bad couse you got a free gaming service that worked with ipx for free basicly. I dont see how a full screen ad working well for a basic web site thoe, I think most people will just refuse to visit that site again

    winex converts DirectX to opengl on the fly to do that at any reasonable speed you need a fast cpu, in reality 500 MHz isn't fast enough to run most modern games under winex

    well to get wine to work with redhat 9 i have to

    export LD_ASSUME_KERNEL=2.2.5

    strangly enough this will also couse realplayer 8 to work properly under redhat9 , i just addded it to my .bashrc file. If anyone knows what bad side efects this will couse let me know

    I dont see how it would hurt the cpu, but still if the cpu is dead to begin with, spraying it down with WD40 isn't going to break it more then what it already is

    A good admin will try to install the best software for the job, sometimes windows, sometimes oss. A bad admin will just install what they are used to. forcing them to "chose" wont change anything.

    well when joe user goes into best buy looking for a printer they are not thinking about how much the ink costs they just want the fastest one for the cheapest price, which is why thoes crappy 50$ lexmark printers sell as much as they do. my first printer was a lexmark 1000, after having to deal with poor quality and lack of good drivers (not to mention no linux support) I no longer buy printers under 200$ even the expensive printers still have to use thoes shitty 30$ ink carts but they last a lot longer

    as long ass our monitor is 2d we'll be stuck in the clasic wimp interface. current 3d gui's suck ass couse you spend more time just fighting the thing then useing it. when we come up with a holographic display then we will start to see some real inovations, im just waiting for they day when you can use your hands insted of the mouse

    some very old computers 386's 486's and some early pent. the vendor, i.e. compaq. would stick the bios setup program on the hardrive. I know of at least 2 people who fdisk'd there hard drive to find out they can no longer boot/and or change the cmos. I belive this as done for 2 reasons, one that it was cheaper in that they dint have to put a rom on the mb, and 2 couse they wanted people to have to buy a new computer in the event of a hard drive failure rather then just replace the hard drive. drive failures were much more commmon back then

    dos dint use the bios for performance reasons at all it used it so that no matter what ibm compat. computer use used you were still able to use the hard drive, floppy ect. It dint matter what type of hard drive or controller. If your hardware linked to the bios you dint need to load a driver to use it at all. And btw, you still need the bios for when you first boot up the computer as it access the hard drive in order to load the OS
