1980-1989 study records preliminary indication of pornography in 62.2% of the extra familial child sexual abuse cases studied (23.1% child porn, 21.6% adult porn, 17.5% adult and child porn). Concluding pornography is used extensively in extrafamilial sexual victimization of children. - Sexually exploited Child (SEC) Unit, Los Angeles Police Department
86% of rapists admitted to regular use of pornography, 57% actually imitated porn. - Dr. Wm. Marshall, Queens University & Kingston Penitentiary Sex Offenders Program
Pornography was involved in the sexual abuse of 87% of female children and 77% of male children
In a study of six hundred American males and females of junior high school age and above, researcher Dr. Jennings Bryant found that 91 percent of the males and 82 percent of the females admitted having been exposed to X-rated, hard-core pornography. Over 66 percent of the males and 40 percent of the females reported wanting to try out some of the sexual behaviors they had witnessed. And among high schoolers, 31 percent of the males and 18 percent of the females admitted actually doing some of the things they had seen in the pornography within a few days after exposure.
In the study, researchers followed a group of about 300 battered women and their children for 10 years and asked them periodically about family life and any problem behavior in their children.
The results appear in the July issue of the Journal of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.
The study showed that children from homes with violent marriages were 2.4 times more likely to set fires than those residing in nonviolent homes. Children from homes where the mother's partner harmed pets or drank large quantities of alcohol were also more likely to engage in fire-setting behavior.
In addition, researchers found that children from violent homes were 2.3 times more likely to be cruel to animals, and harsh parenting from either parent also increased the risk of animal cruelty.
Over time, the study showed that children who set fires were nearly four times more likely than non-fire setters to be referred to juvenile court in adolescence, and they were nearly five times as likely be arrested for a violent crime.
The researchers did not find a relationship between childhood cruelty to animals and a referral to juvenile court for an offense. However, animal abusers were twice as likely to commit a violent offense such as assault or possession of a weapon.
There's plenty more evidence out there, and it's not hard to find.
It took me about 10 seconds to find this information (slow connection - sorry). This is just plain vanilla common sence. Who needs stats and doctors validations when the evidence is all around us?
With so many idiot business ventures out there (ie: we have several thriving pet grooming outfits in my small home town), why can't there be a Linux-only computer store?
People invest their life savings in much dumber ideas than that.
A child's mind is like a bank, whatever you put into it, you get it back 10 years later with interest.
Porn and violence is tearing apart marriages and families. Anyone who can't see the moral decay and complete deterioration of society as a whole because of these two abhorations has their head up their ass.
but I wouldn't trust any "do not call" registry. You're handing out your cell number in blind trust that the list won't be adulterated in the future. It's just like those opt-out links at the bottom of spam - it will likely only alert spammers that it's a "live" and important contact.
a) many outside sites linking to your page. b) many of the keywords used in the search to appear in the body of the text on your page. c) lots of relevant keywords in the meta tags (not exceeding 120 I think). d) a horseshoe lodged up your anal cavity.
Then it's just fine tuning. It's not an ancient Chinese secret.
[rant | on] Microsoft has a monopoly and XP is a perfect example of the ubiquitous sway they have with hardware developers and retailers. Everyone I know has been buying a new computer just to run this whore of an os. Why? Because these robot salespeople are being trained to scare the consumer into upgrading, saying 98 is no longer supported. Whoopity-freakin'-doo-dah-day.
Most users don't use the Windows Update feature or the Microsoft Knowledge base, nevermind doing administrative tasks like defrag the harddrive or network, so why should they change to a totally different operating system which has a different look and penalises people for upgrading?!
It seems like MS can continue to do what they want whenever the hell they want. So they get a slap on the wrist every now and then. Is anyone poised to replace them? Is another operating system breathing down their neck? Can Linux even play multimedia files properly yet, without me splunking the inner recesses of the internet first? Could I actually get working drivers for my Radeon 7500 videocard in RH 9? I can select the server during installation and that's about it. Will Apple stop being so friggin' arty-farty elitist? I want a computer, not a statement of transcendental essentialistic art or some bloody thing!
I wish the climate was different, but MS have no challengers currently. No bother getting all worked up over this. SNAFU. [rant | off]
You have: 13 beer vendors within a 3 km radius. 19 pubs within 4 km. 23 hockey rinks within 6 km. 22 meat markets (for back bacon) within 4 km. 11 skate sharpening huts within 3 km.
And all of these establishments are owned by Ukrainians;)
The ubiquity of the iPod, the return of the Mac, and the simplicity of the portable memory stick are just some of the developments that could change our lives in 2004.
So, if I buy these Apple products and flash memory, my life will change and this gaping chasm which plagues my existance will be gone forever?
To hell with new years resolutions! Where's my credit card!
Nobody seems to know who the core XFree86 team is, or what they do or even did and who or what is going to replace them. The whole story consists of maybe 20 lines. No answers. Nothing.
I nominate this as Slashdot's most useless story of 2003!
You can be the small, speciality, beat-them-with-loyalty/quality company.
Apple is squandering both, by screwing their own loyal customer-base with lack of support (to force upgrades) and products that are grossly overpriced and simply don't last (re: the older 5 gig ipods in particular have a terminal problem with the rechargable batteries).
That's two (possible) class action lawsuits from Apple's own hardcore users!
What about image quality? Features? Drivers? To greater extent, bundles with the brands?
I feel you brother, but image quality is more a subjective thing. One card may have brighter colors while another may have smoother anti-aliasing. Whose to choose which one is better? And drivers change often, especially when it's regarding new hardware. Frame rates should always be the primary measuring stick IMO.
It boils down to whether you want to play Doom 3 with all the bells and whistles (provided you have the loot for it natch). If so, you don't need the latest screamer videocard like the 9800 XT, but a reasonably good VPU which can exploit DirectX 9's more advanced features. That's really key, it's got to be DirectX 9 compliant for the new crop of ubergames. I've tried the Radeon 9700 (which is several hundred dollars cheaper than the latest generation) and it killed. That way your not shooting your whole wad on just one thing. Put the money you saved against more system ram or a faster harddrive which will make a more significant difference for all your applications.
Lawsuits do. Lot's of them. Fear of financial ruin and possible incarceration are effective deterrents against copyright infringement and theft. The people I know who jack movies and music off the net will never, EVER pay unless it's convenient, or they're scared into doing so.
...not every one of the famed 300MHz celerons would run at 450MHz
I attempted to do just that with my celeron 300A cpu: I had it oc'd to 400mhz, no prob, and then when I tried for 450, my mobo had a nervous breakdown. Now I'm computerless, and right after Christmas (when I had absolutely no cash flow whatsoever).
I could deal with dselect and the overall clunkiness of the install interface, but what burned me was how Debian took the liberty of shuffling my IRQ settings everytime I installed it (and God knows what else it did to my BIOS). Of course Windows wigged out apon boot up, so I'm running Redhat.
Debians still cool, but I need what little sanity I have left!
China might become world's biggest laptop manufacturer.
Yeah, they'll usurp the laptop market with ultracheap, super low quality products that don't work properly just as they've done with most electronics. No wait, most products you find in North America period!
Strange how business people in capitalist countries will opt for inferior products from an opposing communist country (with a horrible human rights record) just to save a few bucks and be competitive in the free market society they hold so dear. The irony is too much.
...and it's a "smoke-ring gun". I mean, if/. is gonna shamelessly promote their wares (hey, they got bills to pay like the rest of us), shouldn't the product being plugged at least have some practicality (smart drinks, hardware etc)?
Maybe make a miscelaneous department for fluff stories like this.
I'm just wondering what brought some women to the point where they felt they needed their own voice in video gaming. Was it because of sexism in ads? (I can remember an ad which had a bikini-clad babe lathered in soap draped over a sports car... to sell a videogame!) Is it the violent nature of some game genres? The lack of strong female representation as a whole? Does addressing sexual content like trance vibrator's fulfill this gaping intellectual chasm?
Girls, to my limited knowledge gleaned from being the father of three daughters (2 of whom game on the PS2 and PC), enjoy games that test problem solving spatial skills like Tetris, Pac Man and The Sims among many others. These are the same games guys play. Sex has nothing to do with it.
Congress Cuts NASA's Budget On Apollo Anniversary
How insensitive! Where have all the good times gone? And I'll bet it's been awhile since Congress last sent NASA flowers.
They better sit down and have a heart-to-heart before this relationship gets any worse.

Somebody better tell the US government there's flaming skull guys floating around too (and they look like they're up to no good).

Definition: [adj] (British) very tired
Synonyms: drained, tired
Maybe your next laptop bag will take some ginsing in the morning. Helps prevent fatigue.
Oooh,I've touched a nerve. That must've hurt. Sorry big guy. Ok, so it's the particular way Debian configured the kernel.
Is that better? Are you gonna get some sleep now?
