i'm not sure how that screwed up notion got into your grandfather's head.
granted, there are plenty of people out there who are happier working, and post-retirement stress of living under different(ie non-work) conditions have killed many people off...and don't get me wrong, if older people *want* to work there's no reason why they shouldn't.
my grandma's finally getting into the music that she wanted to go into as a teen. my grandpa has all the time in the world to spend working on crafts and whatnot, and my other grandpa&grandma are dead. there is _so_ much more to the world other than work it is take europe, for example. i havn't been there...and i probably will never be able to go there. but instead of holding 'work' as something of value holding the experience of a paid europe trip as something of value...would make much more sense.
but the oncoming forced labour until death, is detestable. and seeing the odd should-have-retired-ten-years-ago still working because they aren't sick enough to qualify for the 5th tier or whatever medical hospital-house
(round here, if you cannot go to the bathroom _and_ feed yourself, by yourself.. you) that the local con's are trying to force-privatize even further...makes me sick.
a great deal of the people who work at the local walmarts(saskatchewan, canada) i'd say have to be over 65. some look 80. which is sad...i mean, working at walmart is in my opinion a lower place than being stuck in a old folks/retirement home. welcome, my freind, to the new wild west. work or fucking die, shall be the continuing mantra... without unions to let our elders at least have their tired and useless hands lay idle, we are doomed to follow their fate or worse, working until our grave.
what's my solution? Work hard. mabye not for Wal-Mart, but put a zeal into everything you do. line your veins with caffeine. do provigil, ritalin, or whatever you need to get through the night. burn your body and be prepared at all times to commit suicide. sooner or later powers greater than you and i are going to want us for our meat... don't let them continue this. look into ways to defeat them in the long run.
debate rationally, and encourage rational debate.
are you sure there's nothing in your past that would provide
are you communist? socialist? liberal? homosexual? democrat? have you ever suggested committing of a terrorist act? don't bother to awnser, but consider it. i mean, i at least can blame a few weeks of my unemployment on my 'terrorist' status... (who wants to hire a terrorist?).
email a bunch of non-existant accounts(possibly on microsoft's network). when the MAILER-DEAMON (or whatever it is called these-days) sends messages back to you saying basically 'i can't find this domain' mark THOSE as spam. after all, these messages are from microsoft. and voila! send enough of these messages, through enough free hotmail accounts and you could screw microsoft out of a few thousand stamps at least before they figure out what is going on.
summarry
1. Send mail to non existant name in microsoft.com
2. Recieve MAILER-DEAMON messages in response
3. moderate MAILER-DEAMON as SPAM

headphones. get yourself a really descent pair of headphones, ones that block outside noise while you listen. don't want to listen to anything? don't plug them in to anything...and there you have it, moderate peace & quiet, depending how good of headphones you have.
they are also good for keeping your ears warm under a touque. thank you KOSS, i hope to never live without headphones again.
but you have more at stake if you are directly lying, than google does if it's results are skewed. i like my oponents made of flesh, not straw and or silicon.
if i were 5-10 times cooler, i could get and keep a girlfriend. i can say the same for many other geeks out there. we *need* all the help we can get.
it's not like *oh but we are going to lose the girls as they find someone and can't resist the temptation* as much as it is *i would have never of met my last 3 girlfreinds, and i would still be a virgin if there were no internet*
besides, why be so greedy? women should be free to sleep around, shouldn't they? break free of the love meme, don't let it do to you what it's done to me:P
for a moment there, i thought you were describing my little sister, and family. because that's exactly how things are here.
she thinks' shes stupid. she's the younger sibling of a family of three...i'm a 2nd year CS student (and honestly, am kind of bright. Underacheiver, but bright nonetheless), my brother is a punk-musician who may or may not be touring the province at any time...but either way is extreemly talented...she was cut from the same stone as we were...yet she thinks she's a talentless slob that has nothing better to do with her time than watch television. granted, she's a 16 year old girl, who is in good shape(because of my family's barbaric metabolism)...but this firm belief is about to no doubt become self-fufilling. it's so sad. especially considerring that if she needed help with some things she has two brothers to help her (ie maths, or whatever) whereas i (the elder child) got to struggle awkwardly through the mazes of thought afront of me.
but generally, take the above poster serious, this is a definitely noticible phenomenon.
i've dropped the price of the product through the floor. value != price.
perfectly digital things are not valueless.
they are digital, for a start, and that's value right there.
i once had music on mp3.com, and i know damn well that those three to five songs i gave away the rights to, are, well, owned by someone else now.
i personally don't care, people stealing my music, both as in 'making copies' and 'claiming it as their own' i see as a *good thing*, because at that point, you *know* you have been doing the right thing all along.
you knew you were selling out when you agreed to their liscencing agreement. just like the rest of you out in the world who use windows, who use adobe, who use macintosh software, and the bunch of you punks who just click 'i agree' without reading anything. guess what?! you sold out! you didn't even get anything in return, too, except mabye some buggy software!
i have not clicked 'i agree' in almost a year to anything that was not the GPL or something that i can agree with on every point.
oh and NEVER EVER UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES sign an agreement where the other party can change the agreement at any point without telling you and then have the contract still bind you. mp3.com did this, and this one line, however seemingly harmless extends as far into the depths of hell as anyone can imagine. they can own you, all your music, your girlfriend and her pets. and hey, its your fault!
summary? let them steal your music. don't make a fuss, instead, praise them for it. say *go for it!* and let your sound, your work be distributed by them. don't lie, and this means don't agree to something that you don't agree with, and don't agree with things that are totally harmful to you. and if you are sick of the riaa think about joining kult, and we'll see if there's anything we can do on this front.
iff you take that initial 'free' automobile, and using star-trek technology make a million or so copies of it at no cost to the producer of the initial free car, then your analogy would make sense.
as it stands, your analogy fails because it misses an important aspect.
Mu. the musician should not be upset
by the way, i do NOT download movies.(your last point falls on me)
but even if i DID, downloading movies is NOT illegal, breaching copyright is. get your laws straight.
have you travelled at all lately?
things at airports have just gotten a little zany since the world trade center attacks...and people being pushed around or worse by airport security in the name of homeland security is not unheard of any more. while your step dad may have been able to get around security without much pressure to find the sheer insanity encompassing the airlines recently as something other than it is...i think it would be folly...and to see this as an unlikely event is included in this. (although it may have taperred off somewhat, i havn't flown recently and mabye people have calmed down a little...but i doubt it.)
but as you look at smaller and smaller particles the same may very well happen. you find more and more things, as things get smaller, and smaller. allready we are finding the limits as to *what we can measure*...what's really keeping there, a billion billion times smaller than anything we can measure, a group of physics laws that allow for tiny, tiny life to exist, and what's then keeping it from existing practically everywhere? or at least every foot or so. and what of a billion billion times smaller than that? i'm pretty sure our physics isn't even beginning to touch on that stuff, and unless you try to deduce some *one true element*(which i think will inevidibly be able to be broken apart)... you are going to have an infinite regress smaller
and why not larger, too? a sphere with center earth and radius a billion times what we observed has certian qualities, namelessly, mass, center of gravity, etc. mabye it has more qualities, and really, why not? what about 10^10000 times bigger sphere? we have no idea out there and there is nothing keeping us from being some part of a fractal everything happens multiple times everywhere in every possible configuration, so long as it is within the laws of physics,(or mabye not?)?
as for time,
if you don't have the gut to rush the system and cheat like your advanced peers appear to be doing,
then why do you think you are in any way better than they are? you are afraid to take a risk for whatever (ethical) reason, so you feel that others should not take this risk either. You are the weak!! you are growing nearer the chaff! you will be cut off and left to dry in the sun with me and the rest of the rest of the garbage awaiting extinction, who are incapable of cheating.

anyways, i still think that the law is underestimating the sheer force of young people who are sexually attracted to one another. plato saw fit to include mention of this and draft a possible solution to it, and i think that any serious plan on the matter must take it into account.
i may very well be incorrect on why laws were written, and we could very well both be wrong and it could be something akin to a senator's daughter being seduced by an older man or something,..
and while you are probably right, that teenagers in america, and to a lesser degree canada would display the characteristics you describe, i have a sneaking suspician there are cultural forces at work, and that not all of this is necessarry.
now the question is, does the law accomplish what its end is? is the prohibition of liquor to minors stopping those with addictive personalities from ever becoming drunkards? is the keeping of the necessarry descision making process that is sexuality away from our young men and women really keeping them safer from themselves or eachother?
or does it encourage cluelessness.
i suppose it's all in the approach, laws that ban liquor for minors but support enjoyable activities and support liquor and recreational drugs(properly used, to get all shitfaced and paranoid, but safely as possible or at the veryh least respecting risk involved) could very well be much better than the silly beaurocracy we have here, or the 'everyone drinks on television, we are advertised to by alchohol ads all the time but we are not allowed to drink' bullshit...
i'm pretty sure that there are definitely still places you can get charged with posession of child pornography if it's age 18. canada may be one of them. of course, ianal(yet)
what??? you own the email account that you're getting the MAILER_DEAMON messages to...and microsoft owns the DEAMON and it's address.
