The religious right is simply a tool to gain support. The republicans currently in power use both religion and nationalism to gain favor with a sizable chunk of the population. The situation we have now is exactly why government and religion needs to be kept separate. How many of the urban legends spread through email have a left slant? Almost none. Most politcal ones are heavily slanted to the right. It doesnt matter that very few things forwarded through email are true, most people aren't sketical at all and automatically believe them. This isn't even touching the right wing loons like Rush or Coulter. Expect things to get a lot worse in the coming years as the left learns to fight the way the right has been fighting.

As everyone knows, the real problem is waste disposal. The ideal solution would be a safe plant/fuel design that solved the disposal problem and could use up the current high level waste we have now. The lower level stuff is still a politically hot topic, but not near as bad to deal with.

AFAIK, China's in a pretty good situation where they didn't end up building lots of plants while the technology was in it's infancy. If they succeed, then it may convice alot of the population in the US.

    * Need for cognitive closure - I'll leave this open for debate.

I agree with you that many of the "government programs are hurting instead of helping." The problem with most of the programs that conservatives complain about is that they're either on or off when it comes to benifits. The result is in many cases, the people are better off not getting off the program even if they want to. There should be a safety net, but it needs to be possible to get out of the net after it catches you. Instead of removing or adding new programs, our (paid) congressmen need to be change the programs so that people can improve their lives and get off of the programs gradually.
