  2. Re:Not "winning back" loyalty, but maybe winning. on Novell as Open Source Hero? · · Score: 1

I've only needed to use Novell's email support once, and that went pretty well. The email was a simple question about migrating a NW5 server to new hardware, which went smoothly. All other times, support.novell.com worked well enough for me.

Generally, I can tell when the last time we had a power outage that outlasted the ups was by looking at the uptime on our Novell server (our linux servers stay up just as well), so there hasnt been much need for support.

I will like being able to use Linux instead though. We have one 3rd party program that can mess up if the wrong thing happens and won't unload without a reboot of the server. There doesnt seem to be a kill -9 type command in novell (if there is please reply). But, it's rock solid as long as you're careful with that app.

I'm not against overclocking or an Intel fanboy, I run an overclocked barton at home. But I dont think Intel would hold back, especially with the athlon64 out there and with the negative prescott press, Intel might be a bit more cautious than usual.

Come to think of it, spam makes the job of the NSA more difficult.

However, fighting spam doesn't just result in science that's strictly applicable to fighting spam. The same tech for fighting (detecting) spam might be useful for detecting other info -- like terrorist communications, or drug communication, or revolutionary communications. Detecting spam requires the computer to recognise certain information, even when it's been obscured. So spammers might be helping the cops or big brother (depending on your point of view and metallic content of your hat).

That says something about the usability of spyware and viruses compared to av software and spybot. Although, that's kind of like saying catching the flu is easier than getting the vacine. But, in the end, what's needed is the creaters of av/antispyware (asw?) software need to make a dumbed down mode that will basically install and run totally automatically.

  22. Re:When it was originally released... on Always Look on the Bright Side of Life · · Score: 1

There are a few problems that I have with some versions of modern christianity.

    1. the bible is not inerrant. There are several sections that are very questionable. The most popularly known one would be the bit about snake handling. Last I knew, that didn't appear until sometime after 350ad. This questionability leads to the point below.

    2. The concept of inerrancy, in my mind, allows some people to cause their followers to miss the forrest for the trees. There's 2 rules: love your god, and love your neighbor. Any religeon or religeons leader that's teachings violate those is not truely christian. When in doubt, don't look to Paul, or some other 3rd party, look at the life of Jesus described in the Gospels. He didn't preach hate. He didn't kill his enemies. He didn't stand outside of abortion clinics and call people names. So, I guess they can make up what ever logically perfect rules they want based on the literally taken scriptures, but if they fail those 2 main rules, they're full of shit.

Most of the famous and outspoken religeous people aren't any different than the people who ran the money changing table in the temple. Let me put it another way: a true man of God won't make millions of dolars as a preacher. They also wont be murderers. If a religeous leader actively burned people at the stake in the 1500s, I'd question them as well.
