I worked for a company that used OS/2 on a lot of their boxes and it was a complete nightmare to work with. I also cited vengence on it after an ATM running it ate my friends card and then rebooted (not during a scheduled maintenence)
10 years ago when I was still in secondary school we didn't even have windows-based machines, they were all Acorn RISCOS-based. I've not used a single machine like that since I left school.
If it wasn't for the fact that I had a PC at home and learnt to use Windows/Office etc there I would have been at a great disadvantage in the workplace.
While I also agree that kids shouldn't be showing MS products exclusively, I've yet to work for a company that doesn't have them in use for every part of their business, for the simple reason that *everyone* (and their mum:-P) has (and knows how to use) MS Office. As for MacOS, unless you're going to be working in some form of design company or for Apple themselves, I doubt learning it would be of a high-priority for most schools. Really, that should be left for college education where people know what sort of area they want to move into.
Germany has had some economic problems if I remember rightly?
I had a friend who worked in Amsterdam for a year or so and the job/pay/benefits there were a hell of a lot better than the ones I get here in the UK (but then I *am* stuck on a helpdesk and not in a nice sysadmin/coding job which I would prefer)
A lot of the old BBC Sci-Fi stuff either sucks or is cheesy as hell! Luckily they never did re-makes of nearly all of them. Only decent Sci-Fi the BBC ever did was Red Dwarf, and even then it's meant to be funny anyway.
Any more ways of wasting our precious time?

I can imagine this'll cause a problem for all us pr0n freaks out there who get a shitload of banners everytime we click on anything remotely about naked women/men/sheep/cowboyneal:-P
I have a Nokia 5510 phone and it combines a lot of common Nokia functions along with a QWERTY key layout and a built-in 64Mb MP3 player. I got it mainly for the MP3 player, but I've had nothing but trouble with it since I got it. It quite frequently hangs, the software to get the music on the phone is crap and the case is easily broken. I think the only positive aspects I can say to go along with this thread is that it does have a selectable equaliser depending on what style you are listening to, and with the hands-free kit on, the phone puts a 'beep' when a text comes through or fades the music and plays your ringtone when you get a call.
In closing (:-P), mixing an mp3 player with a phone in my experience, is not a good thing....in fact, I've just ordered one of the 128Mb players that this thread is all about, even if the postage was $44.00!!
CNX kicks arse!! Between that and Saiko Exciting on the Sci-Fi channel, I get a half-decent fix of anime on TV at last!
I've read through a lot of the posts on this and there's all these people in US complaining that the anime is not of a good enough quality or that the dubbing is bad, well, at least you get stuff shown! We've had DBZ for quite a while now (we're currently up to the Fusion Saga) and I *think* they've show Gundam Wing all the way through without cutting off any episodes (someone correct me if I am wrong there), but it is only just recently we started getting Outlaw Star, and also as I mentioned before, Saiko Exciting, which shows NGE and Nadesico.
In short, if you don't want it, then send it over here!
I work for one of the UK's national utility companies on their IT Helpdesk, I also am occasionally asked to do some coding if they need a small app to do something. On the helpdesk, we're not customer facing, no one we speak to knows who we are or what we look like because we rarely meet any of them. My arguement for a while has been why we need to wear a shirt and tie if we never have to meet our users. When we do actually have casual clothes days, the general atmosphere is a lot more relaxed and people are happier about being stuck at a desk in front of a VDU all day.
As for the hours (I saw a couple of the early posts on this), we work from 8am - 6pm and 8am - 1pm on saturdays. If I'm working on a coding project, I will only code during those hours because 1) it's all I'm paid for (we don't get overtime), and 2) I like to have my evenings to myself.
I know that if I did have a job where I did coding all the time, I would want to be able to wear casual clothes as dressing in my normal state helps me relax and as such, I'll get more done rather than feeling that this tie is somehow blocking my thought processes!:-P
In my mind, having to wear suit/shirt and ties is an out-dated way of doing things, managers say it helps you look professional and gives the correct look for the company. Whereas I say, as long as the employees are happy and the work gets done, does it really matter what they wear??
Someone else *may* have already posted this, but a while ago on one of the securityfocus mailing lists, it was shown that code could be entered into a JPEG which would cause Windows XP to reboot itself, so I would have thought that worse could be done given time and effort.
Well, not that there's a WC3 beta signup, that rules! But these things are always limited to the US and Canada, what about us poor UK peeps who play the games as well? Can't we get a look in:(
but has he hacked the Gibson?
Good riddance...
Seriously.

I couldn't agree with this point more.

Where can you get them though? I had one once at a gig, but I've never seen them in the shops.
How did I know that would be the first reply to that question ;-P
A european release before an American one!??? That'd be a first!
Depends where in Europe you go.

Amen to that brother ;)
I dunno, I move away from Linux for 2 months and there's a new kernel! :P
