I play Half-Life Counter-Strike. Every map in the game consist of crates/boxes which are square-shaped. These are the few places where people can hide.
Now, the new game-engines out there seem to sport many new elements like trees, vehicles, grass, bush, etc. Which by the way makes us have to look really carefully for an enemy when we play. This really removes the "action aspect" of the game.
Mind you that when people make small arenas in real-life games, they often remove these complex things that slow down the gameplay.
I think its really a paradox that I actually feel SAFER when doing these update internet thingies on Windows, since we have all those people around the world, monitoring what Microsoft do every day.
I'm sure it would be even in the news if Microsoft did something that was not allowed by laws of your government.
However, wget a mySUPER-GPL-programtar.gz leaves me with much less security when I run./configure make and such. Coz the userbase for that program might be very small, and sending private information might be un-known to the general public.

Hello everybody out there using minix-I'm doing a (free) operating system (just a hobby, won't be big and professional like gnu) for 386 (486) AT clones. This has been brewing since april, and is starting to get ready. I'd like any feedback on things people like/dislike in minix, as my OS resembles it somewhat
Any suggestions are welcome, but I won't promise I'll implement them:-)
These can be set on domain level (and applied to your OU's)
or you can set them per computer
Start -> Run -> gpedit.msc
Apply restrictions through policies and rights
Hide drives in My Computer Hide My Network Places Hide the Internet Explorer icon Disable Add/Remove Programs Disable changes to the taskbar Remove Run from the Start menu Disable and remove the Shutdown command from the Start menu Disable the Control Panel
etc.
The Windows XP has more group policy objects than Windows 2000.
Well I've thought of this for years, and also I've had some ideas including inserting small heat-devices near veins (inside body) to make the blood transport heat through the body.
AND I've talked to others that have somewhat thought of similar ideas. I think this patent is just another nail in the coffin for the U.S. Patents.
Excuse me for being arrogant, but you Americans should really start looking into what's happening.
You need 1 x USB extension coord 1 x VGA-cable extension coord 1 x sound extension coord 1 x PS/2 keyboard extension coord 1 x nearby room with a door
Basically, I just moved the PC in behind a nearby door. Making the PC make it's noise in another room. You can of course also use a closet or similar.
PRO This makes the PC go almost 100% quiet, and you do not have to invest into an expensive fan or similar stuff.
CON I seem not to use the cd-rom any more, but some of you that DO use cd-rom (or other hardware devices) may be prepared to walk some steps each time one has to change the cd or similar (i use nocd-cracks or daemon tools anyways).
i've been starting to use KDE for some time now. I first tried Gnome, but that completely sucked, so I started with KDE.
There are so many things that I miss from Windows, that I really must say that Linux has a loong way to go before I can work as fast as I am working when I use the Windows GUI.

1. Women which started gaming from when they were young, e.g. 7 years, are never tested
2. Women have never had such an opportunity as on-line gaming, since there are more easier to find likewise friends, and nobody SEE your gender when practicing
I must also say that when it comes to reflexes, many young women win ANY compo when it comes to e.g. grabbing things with their hands.

Sithu Thein's comment is the most interesting:
"Why do they bother having women only events
for internet gaming? Within sport, I can see the
reasoning for sexual segregation - women simply
are not as big, fast or strong as men. Thus there
needs to be a separate contest for men and women
in order to keep a level playing field. Last time
I checked the x and y chromosomes were not linked
to reflexes, hand - eye coordination, and visual
acuity. Men are not going to be able to use any of
these physical attributes to gain an advantage. As
their advantages are thrown out of the window, so
too goes the reasoning for segregated gaming. As
for women feeling that men make them feel
unwelcome in the world of CounterStrike - history
is just full of instances where the dominant group
in a field has made it perfectly clear what they
think of any 'New Kids on the Block'. You just
have to try that little bit harder.
Sithu Thein, UK"
I totally agree with him. I thought on-line gaming should finally make the genders compete at the same level, but I'm really sad to see that women still are set to "female compos". I understand that women actually may want this, since they still might meet some harassment and such (i can only guess what a 15year old guy say when he hear the enemy is a woman), but I still hoped compos with big prizes should have teams from both genders.
I know this might be a shock for you Linux users, but it's time to move on: Files are no longer files as we know them.
Why? Because using normal files is just too slow. E.g. How do we know which part of a 1gb file should lie in memory, and which should not? We need attributes, we need information, and this information are also files. You see? We end up describing what I would like to call another step for Operating Systems; Object-oriented file systems. Windows allready has some of this in their AD structure.
This will of course need a better file-handling tool. It's just like a big database where we need good rules of what's good and what's not. And this is what WinFS is trying to give us. I'm sure Microsoft takes the step that Unix should had taken years ago.
1. An active-directory similar interface for distributing software packages. E.g. right-click on a group called "Mozilla 1.5", and then just add a computer into this group. This will make the computer install Mozilla 1.5.. All other software should be compatible with this "style", like we have with MSI on Windows. We have RPM on Linux, and that should be okay to use here. Thus we need to have computers as a member of this active directory-thing... And some Domain Admin accounts that are automatically applied to computer domain members. etc. I guess I could go on and on about all Group Policy features of Active Directory.:)
2. Desktop... that actually gives me good control. Also, X crashes much too often. (Linux geeks seem to laught about that Windows has to reboot often, but I hear my users often complain that they feel their computer crashed, even if just X crashes. And I do agree, not much use in a GUI when it crashes, and the time to restart X seem to match the time to restart a normal Windows XP computer..). Also, Desktop and icons must be files, and not stupid complex data-files, which is pretty hard to modify.
1. Run Sync.exe (i'm sure you'll find it at download.com or something) 2. Remove/disable the device in Device Manager (right click My Computer, Manage). 3. Now disconnect your drive. 4. Connect a new IDE drive. 5. Go search for new hardware and it pops up.
"For about 4 hours Thursday night, Steam service was interrupted. After that time, service continued to be slow until about 11:00 am PST today (Friday). These problems were caused by device failure on our network following a power outage. [...]"
This power outage caused the main login-server to go off-line, thus nobody could authenticate to Steam. We all thought the loginserver was DoS'ed, but it turns out that they actually had a power-outage. Single-point-of-failure, eh, Valve?
Anyways, Valve SHOULD have released a LAN-only option for Steam. I cannot believe that they trust the internet for big compos like this.
As for now, I would like to say that any organizers that require Steam for their compos, should really consider downloading a hacked version of Steam that make LAN possible. It is available.
I know it's only Windows, but it's the BEST voice-chat out there. It has very good sound quality, and the server application really offers good functionality with rooms and passwords.

E-mail is unreliable, chat-tools are not.
