cannot afford to have a vehicle for every occasion. Too many people complaining about solo SUV drivers seem to ignore that issue and gloss over it when they see the same behaviour in sedans. Why not ask yourself why you have a car with more than 2 seats when you drive to work by yourself? Most won't ask themselves that question because it far far easier to pin blame on another.
Many of the women here at work drive SUVs by themselves to work. Its not because they like SUVs, though some do, its because family finances dictate someone has to have the family vehicle and that usually it put upon the wife. I see quite a few married guys here with econo-boxes or little pickups - whose wives have the van or suv.
Look at all sides of the story before assigning guilt, there certainly is enough guilt to go around.
The first because the Senate no longer represents the will of the State's legislature and second because the Federal Government encroaches on the power of the states too much.
How would this help out with concern to the current story?
Simple, many states are stuck with underfunded or unfunded Federal mandates. So the states look in ever nook an cranny for money. Yeah we would still have states taxing everything but the air we breathe but it would be far easier to avoid those states instead of being stuck where all of them are surragate collectors of taxes to fund Federal mandates that the Federal government had no real basis for doing.
don't worry, those driving SUVs are paying for them. The burn more gas and hence pay more in taxes to travel the same distance as others. They are usually more expensive to repair as well.
I look at it this way, if someone wants to buy the big SUV, pay the premium for doing so, and then to top it off pay for all that extra gas I say LET THEM!.
Besides there are quite a few people who can justify owning one for hauling the family. Singling out SUVs has gotten so low-brow it makes me wonder why people want to follow such a stupid path.
As for cigarettes, states are looking elsewhere because all their taxes are having the effect they claimed they wanted : reduced smoking. Problem was when the smokers quit it meant someone left the voluntary tax roles. Lottery tickets certainly don't make up all that money so its got to come from elsewhere.
I look at the bright side, my state has a near 1 billion dollar surplus because it doesn't specialize in income redistribution which what most states running a deficit are doing. They have promised so much money and service to people they have no choice but to scramble for every last penny.
Instead of asking why they aren't taxing some people more you should really be asking why are they taxing it in the first place. Too many spend more time wanting to inflict financial burdens on others than the more logical idea of reducing them on all.
My friend abuses alcohol. She excuses anything she does that may offend or be over the line as "that was happy hour and it doesn't count". As she lost her husband to alcholism it is even more of a tradegy. Her family and those she frequents with all excuse themselves from responsbility. Multiple affairs, abuse, endangerment of the children, and other activities are all part of the game.
I do believe that alcohol does remove the inhibitions that many people do have. In my friend's case it brings out some of the things she would only tell closest friends. But it also a personal hell that she falls into because staying there is much easier than facing the reality of life.
Frankly I would prefer to see something replace it that has no long term effect, a short buzz without the impairment or physical damage. By short term I mean its gone in less than 30 minutes or can be neutralized with another substance.
If you don't ban the cheaters you effectively encourage them. Look no further than Turbine's Asheron's Call. The game has a permanent exploiter haven stain over its head. Worse was the day a Turbine developer posted on their own forums that "combat macroing" was condoned. If you encourage one type of the cheating people will use that as an excuse for others.
As for fixing the game versus banning players. I am quite sure its different teams. The game CSR/GM group jobs only interact with developers on bugs and possibly for new tool requests. If anything banning these players may make for more time for the developers to fix the game.
If an industry funds research it must be false? What about agencies perpetuating their own existance by delivering research which supports their existance? Your link is exactly what the issue is all about. Just as much as their is a "Greenhouse Denial Industry" there is a "Greenhouse support at all cost industry". Neither side is completely wrong, just some sides are much more virulent at denouncing the other.
Considering the track record of some of the Global Warming advocates and their actions I have a hard time believing every new definition they create. Seems that anything that isn't normal is a sign of proof to them. No hiding the fact than an elephant is in the room, his name is doubt and attempts to will him away only harm the facts that do exist.
Too many people on both sides, claiming to be scientist, are nothing more than the equivalent of relgious whackos. All who fail to believe are wrong and must be justly punished. Of course we know which side puts nails in trees, releases dangerous animals in attempt to free them, or torches businesses don't we. If the point is so obvious then why the need for extreme and irrational action?
What they are doing is having other people buying systems and then reviewing those systems. They will only review systems where they have an agreement with the manufacturer that the computer can be returned at the end of the review. The key is that the manufacturer never knows who is getting a system which may be subject to review.
It actually works well for both parties. Some manufacturers are proactive in the forums and even acted on complaints received, strengthing their processes.
Linux isn't alone in this problem, my only stability problems are because of third party drivers.

Why compare dissimilar systems? The M90 is a 17" notebook with a workstation graphics chip (NVIDIA® Quadro FX 1500M, 256MB (dedicated), OpenGL [Included in Price] )
The lies are people who use the ignorance of others to make their point. Anyone who took a second to look at the Dell site would know that the two machines don't compare.
The M70 set to the specs of a loaded Macbook is cheaper by at least $200 before the commoningly found Dell discounts. The nice this is that with the Dell you can push the memory to 4gb and you get a workstation style graphics cards.
I am still waiting for a lower priced machine so I can have an excuse to run OS/X. Yeah I need an excuse and the current one is price. I just don't see the value in buying the Mac Book Pro's when similar machines running XP can be had for half the price. Yes I know that the OS is very good and could be better than XP for many things but the issue remains, the "Mac Tax" is just too stiff in this incarnation.
As such I am waiting for an iBook or equivalent. I would still like to be able to upgrade the the graphics through options as I don't want to deal with integrated graphics. I need something I feel is a good deal versus the price points show in the Intel/XP world. I am willing to pay a small premium but not an exhorbinant one. I am sure others are in the same camp as I am. Wanting to have an OS/X portable but not willing to fork out the dough at the current price point. A Mini is out of the question and an iMac isn't portable. While both are good solutions for the areas they address Apple is losing out on the one major area they haven't covered and that is a reasonably priced notebook. Apple could do much better with their laptop offerings. Options are slim in the Mac Book Pro line and I fear any iBook coming out will have very little in the way of customization.
Give us a dual-Core machine where we can choose to pay for better screens, better graphics, and perhaps some other internals; like FW800, internal modem, etc. That should not be too difficult and it would allow people to choose a lower cost solution or a maxed out one.
I need a new laptop and the duals from Dell are just so amazingly priced its hard to ignore. C'mon Apple, tempt us!
Monkeys, especially chimps, are fine and cute when they are young. When they get to be adult age they may still look cute but their damn dangerous to be around, especially if they get into a mood. Most adults you see will have some of their teeth remove to reduce some of the danger.
Flinging poo is about the nicest thing a mad monkey will do to you. First rule I learned, don't get near their cage, especially if they are motioning you to do so. They can put of the cutest expressions when all their intent is pure malice.

Back to the article, how hard can it be for a monkey to learn to throw poo anyway? Politicians do it all the time.
If you have a problem with one of their systems or an iPod (like I did) you can damn well forget it unless the problem becomes widespread enough to hit popular tech pages.
Apple is a corporation, it is not Steve Jobs, it is not warm and cuddly. If Apple loved their customers then Apple would not charge such a premium for their systems. The fact is, Apple loves to exploit, and rightfully so, their position with their customers. They have worked long and hard to create their image and they sure as hell ain't going to let the profit it generates slip by.
Probably explains why the Minbari in Babylon 5 were so much stronger, their beds were slanted with their head higher than their feet. Their explanation was that only the dead lie flat, but perhaps they were simply misleading the humans?
that masquerades as a democracy. Democracy and Fascism are not compatible. One requires much personal freedom and choice and the other requires turning over control of much of society to the government and its leaders. Now a theocracy and fascism can be very compatible as both can revolve around a very strong and charismatic leader.
Iran calls itself a democracy but its obviously not. Yes the people get to vote on leaders but who can run isn't exactly open to public choice. Where is the democracy when the people you can choose to vote for are no one you would choose? Iran, as many countries of this type (dictatorships, theorcracies, etc) love to represent themselves to the world in terms that boast about freedom while at the same time providing none of it to their citizens.
Look at it this way, if you have to put the label in your name your probably not adhereing to that label's intent. A long time ago those lables meant something but today they are just words on paper (example : Islamic Republic of Iran )
I don't go to/. for advertisments. Yes, I know that high-end computer gear keeps improving, and that's all very exciting for rich computer enthusiasts and gamers. But I don't need to read about it on/. as it's not particularly exciting for me unless I just happen to be in the market for high-end gear (which I'm not at the moment), and any info on the subject is almost completely uninformative.
Well/. does not force you to actually read the story. You can customize what stories are presented to you and how they are through your personal preferences -> Homepage. I do this to minimize any story under Politics. In between the stories with their text blurb I occasionally see a one line entry from Politics with its title. From that I can determine quite quickly whether or not to "waste" my time with it. Same goes for Hardware which does encompass many review articles. Anandtech is far from just a parrot of company advertisements, they do do a good job with the reviews on the most part and many of us like to keep up with the products available as well as those competing.
Its the arrogance that some techs have that their appearance should not matter that is a major problem. Look, most fortune 500 companies got that way by doing things in an orderly fashion. Some of this involved having their workforce conform to rules which made it easier to both judge performance as well as attitudes. Businesses are loathe to change something that works. Look at what people term "casual work attire". It runs the gamut but I can tell you this, most of corporate America took a long time to adapt to it and when they did they did so in an orderly fashion.
Many of the guys above paid their dues and some still do. They managed to do it within the system. It does work. Yeah people won't complain about your dress when your fixing their shit but I bet some upper management folks will appreciate your work more if you dress better while doing it. I know, it should not matter you say. Yet it does, by doing so you show respect for the organization and them. Respect is key to the game. What you do on your own time is your business, what you do on theirs is theirs.
Hell if your clothing really didn't matter then why in the hell are you bitching about it? Obviously it matters to you. Whose more immature, the people expecting others to dress appropriately for work or those who this its a bunch of hogwash? I can tell you who is more professional and that is the key to business. Appearance goes a long way, it won't save your ass in the end but it does make many people more comfortable when you play the game by the rules.
If you want to dress a certain way then find an employer who will let you or start your own business. Whats stopping you?
The industry and science are both compensating for human behavior. The problem in Western countries is that the people KNOW what they have to do to be healthy but many do not do it. Throw in free health care and why should they give a wit? Someone else will pay to fix it. People still drink heavily though they know its bad and many still smoke packs of cigarettes daily. Its similar to the syndrome with lotteries. People understand the hideous odds yet still buy multiple tickets. Yet confront them with odds that are many times more likely that their alcohol, smoking, or over-eating is going to cause health problems and they will claim "won't happen to me"
In the less developed countries improving the benefits of food that people already consume helps make what gets to those who need it better for them. Usually the amount of food is reduced by corruption, theft, and environmental loss (bad storage facilities etc).
I really don't care for engineered animal products. I don't have a problem with plants being bioengineered to produce stuff but for some reason it creeps me out when it comes to animals.
Whats next, cows from Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy?
Apparently the author has no understanding of why these games appeal and why the differences between how they appeal to different segments of the gaming populace is what stands between what is now and what he is dreaming of.
First players would want to have some kind of convergence and I doubt only a few do. If people want to communicate between games its not hard to IRC/AIM now with other applications. Trading between games? As in skills, items, etc, - he is smoking way to much crack. First most game companies probably could not get their own products to talk to each other let alone find a viable means of exchanging persona or items between the two. Can't imagine the hell that would be there for communication between two different companies. Like they would really want their customers playing a competitors game.
Uh, this guy saw the Matrix and believed it. Some people just buy into the idea of Virtual Reality and then seek to apply it to anything that they don't understand or any group that is managed/organized via a computer. Throw the word internet in their for good measure too.
I have seen many space based adventure games come and go but none blew me away as much as Starflight did. I even have an old Tandy TX and SX just so I can still play the game!
For a game that only required two 360k floppies it was amazing in depth. The story was great and the detail was good as well. There was even lots of humor involved, some required you to be a real fan of the genre.
I too left the game a few years back because of macros and such. Though I thought about rejoining the game over the short term and doing my best to ignore the high end game. There is just so much to do in that game and starting over from the beginning is such a great option if not just to do all the quests one can do.
There are just so many good quests in that game its a shame that many don't play it. Yeah the graphics are out of date and the developer , Turbine, allowed many people to cheat and exploit for a long time yet its a solid game. It probably could be rereleased with modern graphics and restarted from its beginning and do very well.
Maggie's site was the place for information on the game. It contains a list of all monthly story updates and the quests, items, and new characters associated with those updates.
Who is going to be responsible for the accuracy of the information presented?
Will google police stores that advertise one price but sell at another (or just bury more profit in S&H?)
Sounds like a high tech flea market. Without any guarantees this could devolve quickly into a disaster. Is Google prepared to vouch for the information, if not how will they convince people to use a service they won't stand behind?
iTunes and such has reduced my need for CDs. I still buy them when I find that I want more than 2 songs from any given CD. I figure it this way, if I really like two of the songs I will probably like more of them, so get the real thing. Something about having the "physical" CD around.
Now what really has crimped my CD buying is MP3s. Not those I buy or download but those I ripped. I am going through music I haven't listened to in many years. Discovering songs I enjoyed way back when and again now.
Summary, 75% of my new music is individual tracks from iTunes. The remaining 25% only occurs when I find more than a pair of tracks I like on a CD. Of course that means soundtracks are always purchased.
Are CDs doomed? Probably, simple reason is that they have now become cumbersome. When I can cram a thousand songs in a device less than the size of a CD (width) it becomes apparent which is more convienent for taking the music with me. Its only a matter of time before that convienence influences purchasing them in the first place.

Who is going to collect the funds?
Who is going to deal with the fraud?
