  1. The Wooden Wonder on Mosquitos Have Little Trouble Flying in the Rain · · Score: 4, Funny

Yes, Mosquitos could fly in the rain. However they would have trouble dropping their bombs accurately and obviously the recon version wouldn't get good photos.
The night fighter version would fare better with its radar, if there were any German bombers up there to intercept.

But of course sometimes they had to fly in bad weather, such as just before D-Day.

  9. What is the definition on MusOpen Releases Open Source Classical Music As Pro Tools Files · · Score: 1

What is the definition of "Classical" music? I thought that the works composed by Bach, Beethoven, Mozart and so on were out of copyright anyway..
If somebody composes something nowdays can it be still called "Classical" ?

I can understand that other genres of music can change over time (Like Pop , Rock and Country) but I thought that "Classical" was a period definition.

Heres a car analogy - a car manufactured on or before 1918 is defined as a "veteran" and from 1919 to 1930 is "Vintage"

  10. I remember a story on NC Planners May Be Barred From Using Speculative Sea Level Rise Predictions · · Score: 1

About King Canute (Not sure where he was King of, probably some Scandinavian country.)
Anyway he passed a royal decree forbidding the tide to rise. It didn't work out so well.

  11. Re:Get a refill.. on Soda Ban May Hit the Big Apple · · Score: 1

Just about all the sit-down type restaurants I have been to offer free refills onstandard fountain soda. (Of course I don't live in NYC)

I think this will mostly affect take away and drive up customers.

Anyway while Mayor Bloomberg may be promoting this, isn't NYC a democracy? With an election coming up how many of the elected city representatives will back this plan.

If the ban does pass, then I guess pweople should boycott restuarants in NYC for a while, and go across the river to New Jersey for a meal. Gov Chris Christie doesn't seem to be worried about restricting calorie intake.

  12. Re:cornfused on Virgin Galactic's Suborbital Spacecraft Gets FAA Blessing · · Score: 1

If you're not going into orbit an equatorial launch doesn't make a lot of difference (it did say suborbital in the summary)

But the question remains, how high does tthe FAA's jurisdiction go?
If you had a semi-orbital trajectory from say the Cook Islands (in the Pacific) and landing in the UK would the FAA still have to give you clearance?

  13. It might not sound like much but on Everything You Need To Know About the June 5/6 Venus Transit · · Score: 5, Funny

In addition to observing the rare astronomical event, he also discovered Australia

Which didn't turn out so good for the people who had been living there for 40,000 years.

  16. How on What Would a Post-Email World Look Like? · · Score: 1

Its a bit like those History/NATGEO programs about 'Life After People' - the whole question is, what happened to the people will determine what it would look like.
The main thing that will cause the end of email is a disaster that would wipe out civilization. (Gamma Ray Burst,, dinosaur killer asteroid, supervolcano, genetically engineered plague, or Vogon Constructor fleet etc.
