Katz will remain a poster as long as his posts generate as many comments as they do. Consistantly, no matter how clueless his posts are they generally have the most replies.
This is further proof that the posters don't actually read this site. If they did they would realize that 80%+ of the comments in Katz threads are corrections to fallacies in Katz's logic and not worth while discussion.
I would love to see the bum off this site. But I will admit that his posts and their inaccuracies are amusing in their attempts to be insightful.
This past week due to various sales, people have been snatching up Geforce3 Tis for around $100. I just picked up a Geforce2mx for $30. I consider that affordable.
I haven't seen the code but I am willing to bet that the game's graphics can be upgraded without changing the gameplay.
Art may not make the game but it does play a significant part in the total expierence. Why do we need better you ask? Simple - because we can have better.
This isn't an instance where we have a game where its graphics were made first and the game was designed around it. On the contrary we already have an established game where we have the option of improving its visual appeal.
What makes you so special as to prevent people from wanting better than what they have?
According to Cube.IGN all three of the Japanese GameCube launch titles have received gaming publication Famitsu's "gold" rating. The games are Luigi's Mansion, Wave Race: Blue Storm and Super Monkey Ball.
The first "big book" I read as a boy was The Hobbit. It was passed down to me by my father when I was 6. From there I formed my own opinions of the book and read and re-read the other books in the series. This was way before I ever heard of the internet or used computers on a daily basis.
I am sure many other "geeks" can relate to this. The internet did not create the phenomenon that is Tolkien it is simply fueling new generations of readers while allowing old fans to spew the influence Tolkien has had on their lives.
i haven't sent a snail mail message in a long time that wasn't to pay a bill or something. Even that case is going away. When i talk to people its just "mail me this" or "mail me that." I think we have progressed beyond the the disassociation of the two forms. And if we haven't then its about time we did.
Anyone mind posting the article or mirroring it? My university still blocks the napster.com domain so I can't access it. Pretty sure I am not alone in this matter.
I may be off a bit, but are you sure it was the puppeteer that sent it? I thought the fungus was just a result of an overconfident race who didn't prepare for such a thing.
Anyone who has been keeping up with these little wars knows that glide is dead. It was nice when 3dfx controlled the market and therefore had the edge on features. But now with the majority of the consumer level cards on the market supporting d3d and ogl its obvious that 3dfx would have to grow with the times. So it came as no surprise to me when back in the initial specs of their newest card line they announced that they would not be using glide. This (the Rampage) is going to be a totally new architecture and will support primarily ogl and d3d.
I have never been a fan on 3dfx but I am all for market competition. This seems like the last chance for 3dfx to pull themselves out of the gutter.
Their "glide edge" that they have had in games in the past over ogl dropped extremely fast over the past two years with the rise of nvidia and is shown with Epic's (the guy's who did unreal tournament) new business descion to focus on supporting nvidia cards. nvidia who has consistantly provided ogl extensions to developers to maintain a high ogl feature set. The most overwhelming pitfall of UT's design was its overdependance on glide, which at the time of its creation (96ish) was all that was really feasible.
This is good news for everyone as now 3dfx will be able to provide the level of ogl support as nvidia has. Which can only make everyone happier.

The best thing that could have happened to K5?
on
Kuro5hin Update
·
· Score: 1
wierd but maybe its true. As the saying goes their is no such thing as bad advertising. K5 just got a ton of that. In addition they got some ass kicking servers, and a chance to take a long hard look at how they do things. Arguably none of this would have happened if it were not for some l33t kiddy. Strange yes? I liked K5 a lot, but now it has gotten a ton of exposure which can only make it better.
Considering just how freaken often napster or the RIAA or something to do with mp3 transfering is mentioned here on/. shouldn't it just be made into a topic? I for one am SICK of it all, and really don't care about it. Every single time it is mentioned the same points are re-iterated. Its tiring.
Red Faction does not use the Q3a engine. Instead they are using their own in house engine. According to sharky's article which you mention they use the Geo-Mod engine.
I Believe you have a market there. I like many don't like the taste of coffee but we love the caffeine boost. So how many people would drool over the idea of having say fruit juice that provides the same or greater amount of caffiene? yummy.
The first group I checked out was "net.suicide." I have no personal interest in suicide but the idea of reading the potentially last words of depressed people, or the words of recovering individuals is very interesting. Here is one post that actually produced a smile though...
"Intent on suicide, Frenchman Jacques Lefevre drove a stake into the ground on the top of a cliff overlooking the sea, then tied
one end of a rope around the stake and the other end around his neck. Being nothing if not thorough Lefevre then drank a bottle of poison, set his clothes on fire, lowered himself over the cliff, and tried to shoot himself in the head. Unfortunately he missed, the bullet cut the rope in two, dropping the hapless gentleman into the
sea, where the salt water put out his flaming clothes and caused him to spew up the poison. A passing fisherman picked Lefevre up and
delivered him to a nearby hospital, where at last the weary Frenchman got his wish - and died from the effects of exposure."
Overall i envy the individuals of that day. The majority of the posts that I read were far more intelligible than what I often have to sift through in news groups.
That even though I specifically checked that I did not want to see any more articles by Katz on my slashdot homepage, I am now subject to just this; cleverly disguised as an article by Timothy. It seems the editors have now taken on the practice of "grafting" Katz's articles onto others just so they can forcibly get him some readers. Please when I check that i don't want ANYTHING from Katz, I mean just that.
well its massive in that a lot of people will be playing it at any given moment. but each game is limited to 8 players at a time. Your online characters are saved server side so each time you come back to the game you can still build up your character(s). Things such as saved items and completed quests also carry over. One thing that ruined the original for me was the over abundance of cheating, server side character storage should help. So they will avoid the common pitfalls of MMORPGS by simply not being one but still having so many of characteristics that make them fun.
I find it doubtful that this will become the best selling PC game in history.
When the first diablo and doom came out there really wasn't a whole lot of other games like them before. So if new people wanted to play a game *like* the aforementioned well they didn't have a choice.
The market is a lot bigger and varied now and people have more choices in the genre of RPGs. One such example is the recently released Ice Wind Dale which is sure to attract all the people who bought Buldar's Gate(sp?) which sold incredibly well.
The game will sell well, this was guranteed by the blizzard brand name alone, but best selling game in history? doubtful, but only time will tell.
Yep this is old news. I read about this first in aug/99 issue of SciAm.
A quick google search revealed this.

is "Ix" pronounced ix or 9? I always wondered about that.

at first the 90.000 Cash Registers seemed like a lot until people realized that the actual number was 90 with with 3 zeros after the decimal.
note: i am aware that some countries use decimals instead of commas.

Diablo was originally based on nethack, the designers have admitted this.

I have a feeling it has room enough for at least one. *ahem*
