It's a business, it's about making money, not about patting puppies on the head and kissing babies. Dick moves will be made, trying to dominate the market and squeeze out competition, all of that is about making money. I hate when people go MS is EVIL because they are doing crappy/unethical things.... THAT MAKE MONEY! Stop whining about it and make Linux a viable alternative, because at the moment Linux is STILL not as user friendly as windows.
Could not agree more, rpi is fit for purpose. The company where I work has displays in their branches - before the rpi they were buying PC's with multiple display cards - with the rpi they glue it to the back of the TV, power it from the tv usb port and it costs a tenth of what the PC used to cost. They literally bought out the entire countries stock of rpi's.
Yeah and drinking too much water can kill you. Too much oxygen can kill you. Too much food can kill you. Too much vitamin A can cause a stroke. I'm not advocating the use of MDMA so much as trying to point out that "it's dangerous because if you take too much it will cause you harm" hypothesis relates to a LOT of other substances which are not regulated. ~50 years ago there was cocaine in cough mixture, probably didn't help stop the cough, but after taking it you didn't give a shit about the cough. Remove the regulations and let the problem solve itself, and empty 90% of the prisons. The addicts will die in a gutter and the rest of us can carry on with our lives.
You are assuming it would have the will/desire to propagate, why would it? We have a biological urge to breed so that in we "live on" through our children. Would we have that urge if we were immortal?
wtf. Said he was running it not writing it, don't like him or his business model or his fuvcking software. All I said was that kudos for him in trying to learn another language in an attempt to break into another market, it's more than most do. The vitriol spouted at the mere mention of certain people in/. is remarkable. If shuttleworth had learnt zulu everyone would be clapping. I don't even like linux, I am an MS programmer, so no, I don't want to pander for a job. Also the way you tag each post with "Senior System Engineer/Architect" seems to be a desperate call for recognition, is your real title of "Desktop Technician" after 30 years of service a bit grating?
I think you are misunderstanding this. The debt is all yours. It doesn't change. You still owe the 20k for your car/house/horse. That does not change, and not you or anyone else can change it because you are the recorded debtor. (Well not entirely true, the exceptions are not part of this discussion and are generally reserved for corporations).
You can't just hand over debt like it was a fvcking coupon, it's legally binding, which is why you have to sign all the fvcking papers.
To get the homeless person to accept the debt for a fifth of jack would require a lot of legal paperwork and the bank vetting him, which as a homeless unemployed person he would not pass, so you would not be able to pass anything to him except his free fifth of Jack.
The bank is no longer valuating you on the amount of FREE money you have, ie. the amount you would otherwise save or spluge on a playstation game, they are evaluating you on the amount of money you have after you are taxed. Regardless of other expenses, like paying rent, utilities, groceries, school fees etc. They know that if/when you default they can simply garnish your salary and TAKE the money from you before it touches your bank account, fvck whether you can live and survive after that. You owe them, they take.
The best advice I can give to all. Stop living off credit
If you have to buy it on credit, it means you can't fvcken afford it. If you can't buy it cash - Don't buy it
What amazes me are the morons who argue this one simple lesson. If you could not save enough money to buy the PSX4 or XBOX1 then why do you think getting into debt with an additional interest rate would make life easier? You will pay almost three times as much for your console
Don't be another idiot, the world is full of idiots.
Well if you really want to be pedantic you could go with the fact that whilst the code of "hello world" is simple and mostly a one liner, the libraries and code it relies on to produce that one line is made of thousands of lines of code which might have an issue with the length of "hello world" and cause a buffer overrun.
But I do understand your meaning, even simple code like "Hello World" could create real world problems, you still have to deal with the underlying system problems.
I recall an exploit in WinXP where you could send an overized ping packet and do a buffer overflow.
The fact that you took an interest in learning languages whilst baby sitting, does not make the fact that he bothered to learn Mandarin while running a multi billion dollar company any less. In fact it seems (from me at least) to make you somewhat petty. I agree that he could have a person trailing behind him all the time repeating the Mandarin words for things and phrases like an intelligent tape recorder, and that would make the entire process a lot easier. I still think that it was a job well done on his part, at least give him that. I would also like to ask if you have German or Spanish relatives or friends, because nothing aids in learning a language than being able to actually practice it. I am working on French at the moment, not doing too well though. Have got English, Afrikaans, Dutch and German down to a large degree, but the last three share so much that it's easier to say I only know 2 languages.
Jail time for the manager who made this decision. Even it if it's just a lower echelon peon who is punished (at first). It won't take long before the peons either refuse to take the blame or refuse to follow the order. On the other hand, I am not sure what exactly "install computer system" entails, but if it involves clicking next a lot then they could have hired college students.
Wait let me break with tradition and actually go RTFA
Meh, doesn't say, but it does say they would not be able to legally pay ANYONE at that price. Must have been a nice windfall for the indian workers 8x their normal salary. To be honest it sounds like mostly manual labour, they were moving offices. So relocating PC's and running cables. Get people we know and trust in, pay them extra for the long hours and temporary relocation so the job gets done without having to educate new temp employees. Companies do it all the time. I was shipped out to Namibia to do software installation and customization and my salary was not adjusted (granted I was not earning minimum wage so it's not really relevant). When the company in the article was notified of their fault they paid the employees and the fine.
Seems more like Americans are happy with Indians and Mexicans doing manual labour, running taxis and all night shops but as soon as it touches the tech industry they get all defensive. I am not saying outsourcing to India is not an actual problem, I am saying that this post is overstating things and worded to create a negative response.
I find it a bit suspicious that Africa has handled many Ebola outbreaks before this just fine. Sure there were deaths, it's Ebola, but they handled it. Now we have 20+ medical companies with untested human trials of Ebola vaccines/cures all rushing in to "save" the day by testing the drug on humans without a controlled environment and with no legal liability. If a survivor's next fetus grows a third eye and has an IQ of a sweet potato in a drought are they going to take responsibility? I doubt it. How about getting the right gear and help to the health workers instead of pumping them full of crap you could not test legally in your own country. Stop using Africa as a petri dish. Makes me wonder if they didn't start and help spread the epidemic in the first place. But then again maybe I have played/watched too much resident evil.
You mean the money that is propping up your asset bubble? Do that and we will have yet another stock market crash. It's way past time when the bankers and dealers of wall street etc. should be dragged out into the street and shot. Why wasn't this done the first time round? Why were the regulations that were put into place after the first great depression to stop this exact same thing from happening removed, so that it all happened again? Why have the regulations not been put back into place and the guilty punished? The stock market is a fvck up, I am not saying we should return to a barter type system, but why the fvck can you sell sh!t you don't actually own? Why can you bundle up a bunch of debt and then resell it? Why would anyone buy that anyway? The traders all know that it's a house of cards, but they are making money hand over fist and don't give a fvck. Moving their money out of equities and into bonds so when the next bubble pops they can still drive around in their luxury cars and sleep in mansions while the rest of the world starves and sleeps in tents. A lot of blame was placed on Joe Public because he took a loan he could not afford to repay. Why was he given the loan in the first place? Where I live we were (mostly) protected from the first crash because of a consumer protection act that was (mostly) followed by the major banks. Lately however I have noticed that it's not being enforced and not being followed. I can walk into any bank, ask for a personal loan and get it at ridiculous interest rates, no questions asked. I am talking 35+ interest rates, higher than a fvcking credit card. They don't even ask for an expenditure list. All they want to know is if your full take home salary will cover the payment, if it can, you have the loan. If you default they garnish your salary for the payment amount. Then you're are really up shiit street. But you can go back to the bank and ask for ANOTHER loan, which they will give to you, even though you have bad debt (with them) and they are already garnishing your salary. The average man in the street is an idiot, if you give him a length of rope he will hang himself. Why are the people who are handing out lengths of rope not being punished? In most countries I cannot commit euthanasia, but I can give you a loan which will make you jump off a bridge.
Lenovo laptops suck. For some obscure reason a lot of the companies I have worked for used Lenovo laptops.
Shitty battery life and shitty performance.
So buying Blackberry would be a good move to bolster their shitty handset business (with another shitty handset business).
You don't have a phone, philistine! Crawl back into your cave. I live in Africa, and EVERYONE has a cellphone. Unless they have recently been mugged of course. It may be a brick or a "feature" phone, but they have a cellphone.
Which is why COBOL won't die. It does what it is designed to do really really well. That and the cost to "just rewrite it in java" is too high. When people tell me "just rewrite it in java" I just shake my head and walk away. They are the type of people who think a seventy page website is a "big" project. I worked at a company where just printing the working storage section took a ream of paper, double sided. Granted whoever let the program grow so big should have been dragged into the street and beaten to death with the printer, but there are BILLIONS of lines of COBOL code out their, doing your taxes, house mortgages, credit card interest, etc. etc. Boring fvcken language though, glad I only did 4 years of it before getting out.
They rotate all servicing of the machines, George the serviceman does not have a fixed route, it would be too easy to set up an ambush if the routines were fixed. They do log everything of course, but there is nothing stopping George from going to the ATM six months later to withdraw some money when he will never be suspected. This kind of hack requires a lot of collaboration between parties.
a) The programmer(s) working for the bank
b) The people servicing the ATM's
Unless of course the ATM's in question are one of those generic cash machines instead of custom made bank ATM's
Where I work they spun off their own security company before I even joined (more than 4 years ago), now they do security work for other companies as well.
It's a business, it's about making money, not about patting puppies on the head and kissing babies. When everyone has their own IP address they will no longer be anonymous. No more NATting etc. and you will be able to tell exactly who is who?

Tell that to me (ex) wife. I never believed that a couple could have such a petty argument (we're all rational adults right). Boy was I wrong.

Damn. You have valid points. Never had one fail on me (hardware wise, tend to brutiize windows though, so format/recover is required).

I'm gonna be pedantic here, I would say ALL complex software has bugs in it. Hello world seems pretty bug free to me.

Agreed, I practically crapped my pants playing previous alien games normally, I think I would give myself whiplash playing with the oculus rift.
So don't use gmail. There are PLENTY of other options out there. This is a retarded complaint.
