It sounds to me that he is worried that the start button will be obscured by some other sort of software, disabling it by disallowing users to access it. Similar to that program that drew over people's adds with those of a competitors. I think it was gator. However I find it adorable that Microsoft is so concerned that i may become "confused" and install something I want, which they may feel is trampling my rights as a consumer.
I meant in a "I'm going to file this patent and make money off of it!" kind of sense. I don't deny that the patent was granted, but in terms of the purpose of a patent, it is useless as it will not really guarantee this guy the rights to swinging sideways. Sure legally he owns the rights, but common sense dictates that civil disobedience is gonna win this one.
This should have been listed as a "funny" article.
There's no way this is for real. Anyone remember a while back when someone patented the rights to the ";-)" and people were in an uproar until they realized that you could liscence them for free. I'm sure the same thing will happen here.
Probably just someone out to prove that the patent office is either overworked or very negligent.
a big part of what makes "Intel Inside" is the sound of the repeating "In" this is some sort literary aesthetic enhancement whose name escapes me right now. It may be repetition. It goes on the principle that long runs of words which start the same way are more musical and pleasing.
"Intel Inside" certainly looks that way. Yoga inside just doesn't have the same ring to it. what if some one said "Outside Inside" what would that mean?
We had this debate in my philosophy class, and I'm gonna stick to my guns.
The reason people aren't changing to adapt to their environment anymore is becuase they are adapting their environment to themselves. Can't learn to live somewhere? Pull out all those pesky trees, dig up all the rocks, plow the ground, add some fertilizer and you may just get by...
I heard that 3 is the best radix for representing numbers since it is the closest integer to e.
This maximizes the proportion between the number of digits we have and the length of strings used to illustrate numbers.
Or something like that.
I suppose I was quick to jump to a conclusion about a laptops hardware's reliability. It's just that my experience with laptops, of which I've had several, have never been positive. I've suffered system crashes due to inferior hardware before. I've noticed more crashes on my laptop, so you can see where I'm coming from.
Laptop hardware is a good start, but it suffers from lower reliability, higher production cost (which trickle down to consumers) and performance issues. Some compromises are made and some expenses accepted to minimize size
I've heard that Mar's gravity is too weak to hold on to an atmosphere. My physics teacher started ranting that the energy levels of gaseous particles would rise to the point where they could escape Mar's gravitational well. Or something. This is just another misinformed post. so don't punish me for generating discussion. But I remember there was sound reasoning at the time I heard it. I think its the same for Earth and Helium.

I once read a book circa 1975 called "Computer Lib" It contained the machine code for a digitl wristwatch. It was only like 64 bytes. I'm surprised no one ever thought of this earlier.
Just hook it up to a display and whammo binary watch. Commercialising it should have been done long ago
that and dos and 3.1 were around alot longer than 95 ever was, and 95 was only a sort of stepping stone. Lots of legacy stuff still runs on dos boxes. I know for a fact that Lucent tech still has some mainframe in the middle of the US that runs dos and they have a hugely complex interface layer to work with it today, since I was almost hired to work on it. Its for order placing or something. People still use dos in their really old, entrenched systems. It's the only real reason I can think of for people to still learn COBOL. Banks and old corporate systems still use it! (I think)
The Desktop market is still Microsoft's big money earner. I think Office is their best selling product. I wouldn't discount Microsoft's belief that if people are going to buy PCs to play games, they had better buy the one that can run them all since its got their proprietary directX.
I think Directx was made to kill OpenGl and and attract developers away from more portable, less proprietary systems. I mean c'mon, the only reason linux isn't on the desktop is a lack of good games. Most Godlike PCs are purchased for playing games among other things. Otherwise we'd still have 486 terminals doing everything in textmode.
The difference in win95 and winXP is astounding. I looked up the specs for each:
WIN XP:
233 MHz minimum required
64 MB RAM minimum supported; may limit performance and some features)
1.5 gigabytes (GB) of available hard disk space
(depending on components)
WIN 95:
80386DX (or Intel-compatible processor), 20MHz
Memory 4 MB
Hard Drive Space 10 MB for Compact Installation
For a Window manager, I can't see where
1,490 megs of space go to make the difference in programs. The thing I can't stand more than anything Microsoft does is bloat. If you know the differences between the two that I am overlooking, please point them out. IE 6.0 ran on a 486 dx2 and Directx 8.0a runs on 95 as well, so barring that, whats all the fus about? oooooh It looks purty. Thanks to all of our 100 megabyte bitmaps that we paste everywhere.
The base functionality has not changed, but the cpu usage has? Whats that supposed to mean?
Sweet. I'm not into the music industry that much, so I didn't know. I do know that It's groups like the RIAA that buy their way onto syndicated radio shows. Those top 10 charts are not nescessarily the most popular songs. It's the top ten bids by recording industry execs to have their songs played the most on the radio to garner exposure and sell more copies of the records they produce. Again, not to clear on the subject, but I beleive this is where most of their control derives from.
No one had a gun to their head certainly, but they didn't have many options either. The strongarm tactics going on in this industry give artists two choices, live and be raped, or never even be born. The lesser of the two evils from an artist's point of view.

There are hundreds of known terrorists. I don't think that the point of this lesson is to mobilize the entire United States in the effort to wipe out one specific terrorist group. It should extend to all terrorists. The denial given out by various terrorist groups only show that they are terrorist groups. Since terrorism at any scale is reprehnsible it should not make one iota of difference if you bomb a cafe with no casualties or follow through on the recent, horrible events. You should be treated the same way.
The problem lies in the fact that there is no tangible target which to direct military force. Bombs cannot descriminate between the innocent and the guilty, soldiers can, but they have to know what to look for. Terrorists are small groups of people who plan in secret and are not very keen on announcing their intentions. The only way to detect these people is with Police and Inteligence agencies. The military can provide the force at that point.
I bet the US government will attack the Afgahn Taliban and make many arrests, to the cheers of it's citizens, but the problem of terrorism will still remain. The only way to combat this effectively is to severly restrict the freedoms and processes of society as we know it. It's analagous to network security as I'm sure many here can relate. You must constantly screen traffic and be on the look out for bad stuff. Rouge procceses and the like. This means monitoring things much more closely. You had better be prepared for greater Police power and restricted rights. Just imagine, a Police state with 'Firewall USA' installed on your borders harbours and airports. If this is becomes a reality, in an awful sort of sense, this terrorist attack will have succeeded in destroying the American way of life.
We can only pray that justice is done and that power is used responsibly.
I remember a while back, here in Canada, a bunch of pot smokers made a religion up by saying that pot was god's method of showing us truth and beauty etc. Needless to say, nothing came of that. It's someone's right to refuse blood, but if a child is refused blood due to the religious beleifs of the parents, and death is possible our government would and has 'taken protective custody' of the child. I know that the DMCA is an American law and this loophole looks towards the American constitution, but governments all really think alike. I don't think the U.S. government would tolerate some of the things the Afghan Taliban does. Here, if your wife cheats on you and you kill her, you go to jail. They don't care what religious right you have.
I realise the things a joke but we can dream can't we?

RIBBON CABLES. I hate the things. I would much prefer something where you just plug the drive in like it were a card and off it goes.
