    Actually...
having done tech support for aol, I now recall them sending out a bunch of mini aol cd's. I never got to see one so i don't know if they were the same thing as these or just regular mini disc cd's.

  2. These things are fun! on New Business Card Rescue CDs · · Score: 4

I do tech support for a company who sent a large amount of these disks out as a promotion for a new product. Well, as you could guess we got plenty of calls where people had put them in the cdroms that don't have a tray that comes in and out. The ones that just suck the disc in. I even talked to one guy who put one in his regular cd-rom drive and when he opend the tray to take it out it had "eaten it" in his words. And now it was "lost somewhere in his cdrom drive."

I don't know how many people they had to send reimbursement checks out for their cdrom drives to be fixed but we got quite a number of calls about it.

Imagine if AOL sent out 20million disks like these. There goes 10million cdrom drives to the repair shop. Haha!

There were multiple copies of blowfish.c and blowfish.h around the system. So obviously they have a reason to scan for them.

This is cool, except for the fact that it's 120$ canadian. Right now, actually, I am building my own athlon OC'er with the circuit on tomshardware.

I finally got 5 of those connectors after about 2 months of trying to find them. No one really sells them in non-bulk supply. Now I'm just waiting on my resistor packs and diodes. So far I've spent maybe 20$ on the whole thing and that's all I'm going to have to spend. If you know how to make one you can save a lot of money!

Btw, if anyone wants to buy 1 or 2 of the actual 40-pin connectors email me at jpal@linuxfan.com. They're a bitch to find, and I'm willing to sell 1 or 2 of them if someone else wants to build their own.

I live in the low income part of a 200,000 person town. I've had cable for about 4 months now, and the service has been excellent. I've only had one problem and that was due to someone in the accounting department setting up another account which caused a change in the MAC address. This took me out of service for maybe 3-4 days max.

I normally will d/l at speeds ranging from 75k/s to 300+k/s. The only thing that really sucks is the upload cap at 16k/s. I can live with that, it's better than a modem... I'm not going back to one of those.

Obviously in this case the reason I have good service is not because I live in an area with $150,000 houses around me. If I had to guess, I would say that not many people can afford a computer, much less a cable modem to go along with it. Therefore, I'm one of the few people using the service in my node.

On the other hand, I have 2 other friends who have gotten nothing but shitty service from the same company. They live in a little higher income area than I do. Possibly a more dense population also. Go figure.

So I don't know what it is. The amount of people in your area using the service, the amount of money in your area, or just plain luck. But I've been very happy with my service and feel extremely lucky to have such a great connection.

And for the dalnet thing. Last I checked (about 1 week ago) all I had to do to get on was to have an ident server running. Simple. I got onto more than one server that way.

  7. Re:But the asterisks were funny. on Scott Kurtz Blasts Comic Strips on Tech Support · · Score: 1

You may think they don't believe you, and they probably don't, but they have good reason not to. Look at it this way... the usual customer that calls into tech support is either an idiot or a liar. I have on more than one occasion asked a customer if they've done something, then they say they have, but it ends up they didnt. You want to cover your bases just incase! Why go through 10 different steps, skipping the first one b/c you believed the customer has done it, just to find that what fixes the problem was the simple task the customer claimed they did. You overlooked the simple step of unplugging your power supply, and it almost killed you.

Additionally, many customers will say they did something, even though they don't know what they're answering "yes" to. They don't want to look stupid.

Most of the time it's pretty easy to tell if the customer is clueless or knows what (s)he's doing. But even if they do know what they're doing it's best to go through the steps just to make sure.

So don't take it personally when tech support doesn't always believe you. You get frustrated talking to one tech support person, while us in tech support have to deal with 20-70 customer's a day for the most part. And the people who call in aren't too bright when it comes to computers. I mean, I've talked talked with many rich doctors who don't know the difference between their ISP, IE, and Netscape. You think we get frustrated a lot of the time? I'd say so.

And to kind of stay on topic, it's strips like user friendly that allow the tech's to get rid of some of that frustration. Tech support can easily burn you out if you don't have the right mindset.

I think you're missing the point. From what I read he's sarcastically saying that all the comments posted here in regards to "Who cares? shit happens, get over it." are missing the point of what the website is for. Yes, shit happens, and we all have to move on, but next time a whole school blows up because some kids want revenge should we all just say "Oh well, shit happens, move on!" You know? Where do we draw the line??

Talking about problems help a lot of people. Sharing stories of how someone fought back(not even physically) will give more kids out there the courage to stand up for themselves. Standing up to this type of abuse is very difficult for some people. Not all people think alike, and everyone has different priorities. Telling someone about what is going on may seem to them worse than living with the abuse. Depression is one of those things. Something I know from experience. Most people hide it until they actually try to kill themselves. Then they are put on medication, or some aren't alive to be treated.

Getting up and moving on IS a GOOD thing. It's just that some need the support of other people who have been through it to get over it. Your last two sentences are probably the best advice you can give. The only thing is getting people to stop thinking things will only get worse. That is why this site can and will be helpful to many.

Maybe I missed his point, but hopefully I made a few good points on my own.

Actually there wasnt much of a director. The 3 actors were given the cameras, food, packs and sent into the woods for 8 days. They didnt know the whole story nor did they have a script. At checkpoints they would be given a storyline and some food. So all the camera work was done by the actors themselves. BTW, they had a GPS system so they wouldnt get lost.

Another cool thing is that the writers of the film actually played with the actor's minds during the night(noises and they gave them less and less food as the movie went on longer). They were trying to get as much raw emotion out of them as possible. Makes the movie more realistic.

Great movie, great concept and very creative.
