The EU has the chance to stick it to the big bully on the block--America. They aren't going to let MS get away with ANYTHING now that they've got 'em where they want 'em. They are going to nail MS to the wall, to say "We aren't going to let those bullies in the US push us around anymore!"
I'll tell you where--we're no further along the road to equal rights than we were when King marched. The only difference now versus then is there are no colored entrances.
Racism still abounds--both in America and around the world. People are still paranoid, xenophobic, prejudiced, racist fucks that all deserve to be shot.
The ideal model would be that the record companies actually stop selling records.
Stop laughing, I'm going somewhere with this.
See, their entire goal is to exploit as many people as possible. So they hire the bands for minimum wage. Then they charge them for the privliege of using their recording studios (which they have to use by contract). Then instaed of selling CDs you'll either be charged a fee to RENT the CDs, or you'll be charged for radio (XM and Sirius have already begun charging for radio). Anything with a "Record" button would be outlawed, from a handheld microcassette to a PVR. YOU don't own the music, THEY do, and you should be GRATEFUL for the privliege to listen to it.
This'll put all small online businesses OUT of business--they won't be able to keep track of tax paperwork for all 50 states, and all the counties and municipalities in each state (many states' sales taxes differ depending on where you are--in Butler County, PA the sales tax is 6%. Four miles down the road from here, in Allegheny County, it's 7% (the county adds 1% to take for itself). No small business owner can keep track of that much paperwork, and they'll be driven off. Meanwhile the big megacorps that have entire divisions of accountants that handle taxes won't be affected. They already have locations everywhere, and they already charge people tax if you live in a state they have a brick-and-mortar location.

Note he says some should be $.99 and some should be more. He makes no mention that some should be less--because many should be. In fact I'd say at least 90% of the songs released in the last 10 years are worth about a dime, total, for all of 'em.
It was only a matter of time. Soon shows will all have these flags. I can already see it. "Record and watch in the next 24 hours or it will be deleted forever." Or simply "NO, you can't record this."
The average turnaround from initial theatrical release to home video (VHS or DVD) is six months. Some have been faster (like the first Batman--only 3 months). Some have been longer. But most are around six months. A movie that came out Memorial Day weekend will be on video just before Christmas. (that means look for Episode III to hit stores around early/mid November, just in time for the holiday shopping season) That's why May/June is the big time for summer blockbusters--so they can give it a good 1-2 month run, then work on extras and packaging for the video release.
Whether Netscape was better or not is immaterial. They EXISTED; that was enough to make MS want to shut them down. Their very BEING made them a threat, and so MS worked to extinguish that threat before it ever materialized into something they couldn't control.
CA state tax refunds are expected to drop by more than 75% this coming year.
"Yes, we did your taxes for you. Looks like you paid exactly what you owed us, no refund for you! And look at this--seems a lot of you underpaid this year. Tsk tsk tsk...we'll expect those checks by April 15, please, otherwise we'll be seeing you later.
Why does everyone say Intel chips overheat too much? I've been using Intel reliably for years and never once let the smoke out of one. Then again I take cooling pretty seriously after the last K6 I had self-destructed in spectacular fashion due to heat.
more like REsurfacing. This comes around every year or so--Apple's gonna ditch PPC and go to Intel. Every couple years it comes up, and every couple years it's debunked.
The TRON DVD doesn't play on the PS2 very well. It works fine up until I think chapter 8, then goes haywire. My advice is to watch the film up to the point where it gets blocky, then reset it and start over at the next chapter. The rest of the movie will be fine after that.
With this new core, you can expect the Northwood to hit 3 GHZ before long. My guess would be Q1 '03.
And like what was just said. You ALWAYS need more power. If you think you have enough, you don't. If you think you've got a little too much, you don't have enough. If you think you've gone WAY overboard, you might have enough.
That's odd. I didn't have any problems like that with my @Home installation. Hooked up the modem, changed the network settings, looked at a few pages to make sure it worked (and boy, does it!), and that was it. Whole thing took all of 10 minutes. Hardest part was getting behind the desk to hook in the cable.
I'd have to agree. What good is a laptop computer going to do for a kid anyway?
It's practically given that if you give an immature individual access to technology, that individual will abuse it. I mean, look at what happened with the cell phones.
The cash they spent to outfit the schools with these laptops would have been much better spent in teacher salaries or school renovations, or by promoting art, music, and other creative thinking exercises.
I want to see more money thrown at school art and music programs. If the kids can't be creative in school, and we know they won't be creative at home, how is anyone going to develop new stuff?
I'm here on the west side of Albuquerque, NM and as far as I know, I've never lost service.
Here's hoping it stays that way. Otherwise it's back to playing Quake III with a ping of around 600... I really enjoyed lag-free playing (even if all I ever was was cannon fodder)
This really sucks. And I was just starting to really like my cable connection too. Oh well. Knew it was too good to last. Looks like it's back to dial-up for me.
Tesla promoted DC. Edison (backed by Westinghouse) pushed for AC.

It was sooner than I expected, but I knew it was going to happen someday.
All forms of human transportation have come to this point eventually. Build it, and SOMEONE, SOMEWHERE will want to race it.

Yeah. Great. This is why I still own a VCR.

You, obviously, have never had to use a touch screen for any extended period.
A complete lack of tactile response means if you're a touch-typist you're screwed.

it lurks in all of us.
Corporate heads would do well to remember that.

I'm not taking any more chances.
Not all of us are electronics majors, and not all of us build our own PCs. (I am, and I do, but that's besides the point.)
I actually thought the article was well-written. Despite knowing a fair bit of this stuff already, I still learned a few things.

plus or minus 3%.

Question:
What on Earth is that gibberish? Too much Jolt! cola? Someone please explain what this crack-monkey is doing!

I can honestly say I never thought I'd see a Shakespearian sonnet outside of my high school English classes.
It even keeps the proper structure the whole way through.
This guy deserves a cookie. I mean really.
