One last thing. Treat me as if I am a thief, and I will be a thief. If you already think I steal from you RIAA, then I will continue to steal from you.
That's a pretty weak rationalization for your activities. The fact of the matter is that downloading music from P2P networks is usually illegal. I do it too, but I'm not going to pretend that I have some moral authority to do so. I do it because I'm a cheap bastard and I'm not going to pay $16 for 3 songs.
Pretending that you use Kazaa because the RIAA assumes you're a thief is silly. I have a feeling that if the RIAA completely dropped their campaign, you still wouldn't be uninstalling it.
As for Windows Media Player -- I'm not even sure what Microsoft's goals were for that.
I'll tell you what - Microsoft's strategy with Windows Media is much scarier than anything it ever did with IE.
With a VERY DRM-capable media player on 90% of the world's desktops and audio equipment, Microsoft is positioning themselves to be a toll-booth between the media outlets and the consumers. You think they're rich now? Wait until they're getting licensing fees for EVERY song that comes from the Big 5.
He was even providing basic support for total newbs.
Suhweet. All this Perl and Python stuff is killing me. We're finally going to catch up with Microsoft when we get our BASIC interpreter for Linux.

Okay, here's my idea for U.S. change reform (no, that's not redundant).
How about we just get rid of the damn penny? I know, I know, "A penny saved is a penny earned." Guess what - Ben Franklin said that two hundred friggin years ago. Adjusted for inflation we should be walking around saying, "ya know, 5 bucks saved is 5 bucks earned."
If Franklin were alive today, he'd think we were retards for scrounging around for such piddly sums of money.
I'm not saying we need to eradicate all pennies, but how about we just stop minting them? Anyone?

I'm sorry, but your cousin is a fucking dipshit. Period. At least maybe his life will serve as a warning to anybody else here who thinks watching movies in a 2-ton missile is a good idea.
Forget the LCDs - the real story here is that a Slashdot editor made an attempt to prevent dupes.;-)

Good point. I think they should make an extra effort to make sure that people understand the usefullness of "season passes".
Perhaps Tivo Basic should allow up to 3 season passes. Otherwise many people are likely to just think, "whoopee - it's a two-week version of TV Guide."
truly annoying copy protection schemes [...] aimed at squeezing either a competitor or the consumer
Explain to me exactly how Microsoft's copy protection schemes "squeeze" the consumers. The fact is that people run unlicensed copies of Windows and Office by the hundreds of thousands and MS wants to cut down on that. Can't say as I blame them.
So boo-fuckin-hoo for people who are pirating software, comrade. Why don't you work on developing your own opinion?
But what was the point of your post? If it really bothers you, why are you on the site?
Because I generally enjoy the site. Is there something wrong with trying to improve a community that you like?
I think Slashdot could be a lot more interesting if it wasn't for all the hackneyed anti-MS posturing that is mandatory. Do we ever see stories on interesting stuff that Microsoft has done (e.g. Longhorn's database driven filesystem)? No we don't, and why not? Because we hate Microsoft.
Can you imagine how stupid Microsoft would look if every document they produced had some half-ass, unfunny, dig at Linux?
And of course, we all know tha Microsoft release dates never slip...
For the love of Pete, do you guys ever stop to think about how sophomoric this site seems when EVERY post about Microsoft is littered with anti-MS sentiment? Ooh - they spell it "Micro$oft", that's hilarious.
We get it. Slashdot loves Linux; hates Microsoft. Grow up.
Heat? I don't think so. The vast majority of solar electromagnetic energy is above the ultraviolet wavelengths. See this (ultraviolet is between 0.001 and 0.4 microns).
think of the movie posters turning blue in the window of the video store
I've always wondered why all glass windows don't block UV light. It'd be a nice feature, as it would prevent your furniture and carpet from fading. Besides I can't really think of any reason why someone would want UV to get through.
It's got to be a fairly cheap process or EVERY pair of sunglasses I've ever bought wouldn't always be labeled "blocks 99% of UV".
Easy on the sarcasm, brother. Yes plaintext password exchanges are obviously more dangerous than encrypted. That said, sniffing plaintext passwords is a lot harder than it used to be.
Nobody uses coax anymore, and hubs are becoming increasingly rare. The only way to sniff most networks anymore (unless you're interested in broadcast traffic) is to have administrator access to the network equipment between the server and the client. Or be able to insert your own equipment. Both of which are considerably more difficult than firing up tcpdump on your workstation and collecting raw traffic.
Have you ever tried dropping the touch-tone service? Your modem can dial pulse and most phones can too. You'd still be able to use touch-tones on phone menus. The touch-tone service only refers to initiating the call.
Of course they'll probably tell you that it's not an option. Still, it's worth a shot.
It's hardly shocking in light of Bugs Bunny catoons that we've all watched for years. It's violent, but it's not ultra violent.
Face it - GTA3 is disturbingly violent. What's scary here is that you claim you really don't see the difference.
An anvil falling on a talking rooster and then said rooster getting up and dusting himself off is funny. An old woman being beaten to death with a baseball bat and then falling to the ground surrounded by a growing pool of blood is not funny.
If you say, "Yes - GTA3 is a dark, violent game; but that has no effect on my actions in reality", thats one thing. And certainly a debatable point. However, for you to say that GTA3 is not really violent and just misunderstood? Pardon my drama, but that sounds like something the Columbine boys would have said.
[Incredible prediction here: I'll bet this gets modded as a "Troll".]

As of course does Opera (and has done for some considerable time).
Man, you Opera guys are getting to be as annoying as the Mac users.

It's not funny. Violates the cardinal principle of comics.
I think the author of Family Circus would like to have a word with you.
That's the point of all the dupes. The first posting is really just practice.

I thought I was getting 50 spam messages a day. Then I found out it was just my wife wanting me to get a bigger penis.
I guess his story makes sense. I *lost* my ass in the stock market being a time traveler from the *past*.

How will game companies lure us after graphics become photorealistic?

Three words - genital interface controllers.
