Actually, yes, a lot of people do click on those. There are hundreds of millions of people that surf the web that are not a part of the techno-elite that you, I, and the rest of slashdot readers are. They click on that stuff in droves. I watch my parents do it all the time.
These people are also not savvy enough to install adblock, but if it came by default with a good set of rules, then the ads would just vanish. They would not care on way or another, but they would stop clicking.
You're confusing IP and Patent. Try this as an example. Let's suppose (a long time ago), EA patented representing a Sports game on a video game or computer.
Now, everyone is screwed, including your Berry Saunders game.
Cory Doctorow is also a crap author who very few people would actually pay to read his junk. He just has a self-inflated sense of his own talent and a cult following that will buy enough books to make him think he's seccessful.
Tell that to all the people studying ants and ant colonies. Geez...get off your log. Believe it or not, things happen in this world that you don't know about.
A friend of mine decided to defend herself against a silly lawsuit once, and she had a hell of a time getting all the paperwork correct and lost on several procedural grounds, allowing the other party to get an injunction and seize her house. I kid you not. The judge (who felt really bad, I could tell) had no choice.
She eventually got a lawyer and in one court hearing everything was fixed, but it cost her close to $10,000 in the end to get her house back. The original lawsuit was dismissed.
I've got a better idea, why not shun all consoles since they are evil in the way these big companies control the content that can and can not be put on them. Support the PC, which is completely open, no big-company restrictions.
Do you really think you're going to see anything other then big-budget games on XBox/PS3,GameTriangle, Nope. Because these big companies will only allow games on the machines that like.
The problem with/.'ers if they way they will bitch bitch bitch about something, but will never make any hard choices that might cause them an ounce of inconvenience of lack of fun.
It's proof that cheap, DRM-free online distribution can work./i.
Yeah, and screw all the artist out of their money. AllOfMP3 is a loop-hole that allows the russians that run the site to make money, and just about no one else.
The thing that is wrong with UNIX is the file system, or more specifically, a file system stuck in the 70's. Come on. File systems should be Databases, and I don't mean a database stuck on a file system. At it's core, it should just be a database removing this silly antiquated notion of directorys as the sole means of organizing data.
Every application should be able to create it's own schema for it's data needs.
It's something that happened in a public place, and as such it shouldn't be any less legal to photograph it than it is to witness it.
It's perfectly legal to photograph someone in a public place, but it is not legal to use that image for commerical purposes. This is a issues that photographers deal wih everyday.
IMAP is much better, in that it only downloads the headers of the messages until you read the body. For someone that travels and has to dial-up and has moron co-workers that email large attachments around, this is a must.
Cryptic's staff of 35 made the art and story come alive in 480,000 lines of code. The code is separated into 740 computer instruction files that handle everything from dressing up a character in an almost infinite selection of outfits (a total 10 to the 27th power, in fact) to flying through the city, as well as 25,000 graphics files.
If I ever need meaningless techno-babble for my next sci-fi novel, I can use this!
And who would pay for all the marketing of the music? I know this is not a popular thing to bring up on Slashdot, but it takes a lot of money to market music. It's one of the reason bands want to sign a record deal, it's not just for the distribution, it's because the record company will promote the music. That doesn't come cheap in todays market.
When a band gets an album cover on the front page of iTunes, do you think that's because it's good? No, it's because the record company paid for "placement", just like they do with the big posters in the windows of Tower Records. That stuff doesn't happen for free.
We can all wish for some utopia world where the best music sells the most, but it doesn't work that way. If it did, Linux would be #1, not Windows.
I'm not really sure I'd call Concorde a failure with 20+ years in service. Because of the cost, it's far from a huge success, but not exactly a failure.
The biggest problem with Concorde was the noise issues that kept it some being deployed worldwide. Had it had been, economy of scale might have made it an economic success as well as a technical one.
The 747 would have been a huge failure with so few planes only two routes.
That's because you don't make your living off creating original IP. Music, Movies, Games, Books, Etc.
Please. Please take the time to understand the issue from the point of view of the artists. And please be mature enough to realize that not all artists are rich spoiled musicians.
If I create something and people use it without compensating me for my hard work and talent, then that is wrong (assuming I am asking for something in return). Maybe it's not "stealing", but it is not fair and it is wrong.
Do you believe that anything that is not a solid object should be freely copied whenever someone wants? Honestly? Have you really spent the time to think about what that would really mean?

'nuff said.

Unless it's traffic court, don't defend yourself.

It means that your password has to be at least two characters long.

The problem with
Hypocrites.
Yet another person that fails to understand the difference between "art" and "craft".
>>"$36 million?! Shit, we can produce an two seasons of 'Friends'
Given the amount of money they were paying the stars of that show, I seriosuly doubt it, but your point is taken.
Why is the "net" any different from cable or sat? It's not, so the net is next.
Everything is next...god help is all.
I don't think HDTV is worth the price.
That's because you've never seen HDTV. Shit me a brick, it is amazing. It's so good, I won't watch a show unless it's in HDTV anymore.
I run MythTV with a HDTV card and $700 projector.
I'll never go back. I bought 5 HDTV cards, just in case this broadcast flag crap goes into effect. I need backups.
if they want to try to exercise any control over my blog, they can go to hell.
Great attitude. You're probably one of those people that is a complete ass, then get fired and blames everyone but themselves.

This not an insightful comment. MySQL is a great database for a lot of uses.
The parent post is the typical attitude that if something doesn't fit *my* use, or *I* don't like it, then it's shit.

Well, pal, the budget for many of the games that are produced these days approach that of a hollywood blockbuster.
Not even close. Most games cost around $10M, the big ones (HL2) around $30M. Block buster movies cost around $100M. Budget Hollywood movies cost $30M.
The first two episodes sucked
The first two episodes where shown out of order. No wonder they didn't make any sense.
Which way would you go about it for maximum "WOW"."
Buy them a Mac

Because for most "normal" people, typing gmail.com is more intuitive them gmail.google.com.
