Cedega doesn't need to just emulate the specification for DirectX/Win32, it even has to emulate the bugs(!!), and other undocumented features. That's where the problem comes in.
While I use Gentoo, SuSE has come up with quite a nice way of dealing with the problem you describe. YaST2 - while being a tad bloated, can either run in an X-Windows GUI, or work under ncurses using its own toolkit and thus keeping the layout just about the same.
I've heard that MS hires the best programmers they can possibly find, straight out of MIT etc. How the hell can an enormous corporation like that, with the best talent they can find, make such frequent and enormous cock-ups? Anyone from Microsoft care to comment?
Seriously, this crap has been going on for an insane amount of time now. This announcment is quite clearly yet another attempt to manipulate stock prices.
Slightly OT here, but the main thing that seperates spyware from viruses is the EULA, and the ability to reproduce. If some idiot made a virus that tricked you into accepting an EULA (which gave itself permission to reproduce), would it be legal?
I think the whole thing's void, seeing as prohibiting a user from removing software from their own computer is almost certainly classed as unfair contract terms. The arrogance of those bastards is quite unbelievable.
I want you to upgrade 60,000 machines from samba 2.x to samba 3.0 and I want it done tomorrow, and they all better work.
That can be done through a script put out on the network. Depends on the distro though. Either way, it's a hell of a lot easier than with Windows.
The Windows install ships with VASTLY more hardware support than any linux install, and everyone knows that.
Actually, a standard XP/2K CD doesn't have that many drivers. Let's pick an example - sound cards. If you use SuSE (or whatever) with ALSA, it will pick up practically any PCI sound card with no extra software. Windows, however insists you provide it with a driver CD. Another good example is with video cards (with the exception of ATI/nVidia-based cards).
different manufacturers and different configurations
You know that (re)installing Windows on a large number of systems of different types, for example when an upgrade fails, is a total fucking nightmare, yes?
At least Linux comes with 99% of drivers pre-installed. With Windows you have to find them on the net first, then find some way of getting them to the target system (because you don't have a NIC driver, remember?).
Wrong. The P4 Northwood (800MHz FSB) kicked the arse of the Athlon last year. This year however, AMD wins it by innovating (ie 64-bit), rather than copying Intel. Are you listening, KDE team?
Hopefully Intel will get off their arse and make a decent 64-bit compatible processor.. bringing down CPU prices through competition.
As far as I'm concerned, if your still running windows connected to the internet, buying Lexmark gear, and reading this with IE, then you deserve everything you get.
While virtually everyone on slashdot knows to install anti-virus, anti-spyware, firewall, firefox etc, it's all getting way out of control. Who the FUCK (except from a tin foil hat nerd) would expect a PRINTER DRIVER to spy on you? Isn't it great how this sort of crap is legal, but (for example) modding a console isn't?
Dell's motherboards (last time I looked) have Intel chipsets on them. They're probably getting both the chipset and the CPU off Intel for an insanely low price. To compete, maybe AMD needs to start producing their own motherboard chipsets too.
Actually, the grandparent post is correct in some ways. There's a commercial browser (which will go unnamed) that sends out it's registration key in every HTTP GET.
Absolutely spot on. I've been on a train and seen people struggle with the 'Open' 'Close' and 'Lock' buttons on the toilet. People really are that stupid.
5. Windows is capable of performing the simple tasks most people require.
I think the main problem is simply laziness. The same reason why Internet Explorer has a much larger userbase than Firefox - while Firefox is much better, IE works/just/ enough for people not to bother upgrading.
You can't really blame Sun for applying for this patent, considering that every other corporation patents whatever they possibly can too. It's an overall problem with the patent system.

$1,000,000 says it doesn't.
Maybe the technology could be used to take a comet off-course when it's about to hit something we don't want it to (eg Earth)?

Same here. No dead pixels and a decent picture. Proves that little-known brand names can be just as good as than the more popular ones.

Remember that the next time you use find (without rebooting), the Linux kernel will have cached the filesystem, making it take only a few seconds.
Absolutely. The loading times in the article seem a bit poor as well. 15-20 seconds of disc activity can't be good for the batteries.

Like this one [creationscience.com]
Erm.. don't you think creationscience.com might be just a little bit biased?
IANAL, but I think if you get convicted of a crime, all assets from that crime are 'confiscated'.

AMD spanked Intel for more than 2 years

I think the really worrying thing about this post is that it has been modded 'Interesting'.
How could Sun settle? IANAL but it seemed like they would easily win an appeal (in a courthouse anywhere but Rochester).
$92 million isn't a lot to avoid a several-year-long ludicrous court case like the one between SCO and IBM.
The problem with your argument there is that the particular /someone/ may also be violating that 'patent', and get screwed as well..
I wonder how this could affect Mono.
