One always needs to keep in mind that whatever you put on these internet sites could be seen, copied, and used in any way imaginable by virtually anyone. Keeping that in mind, I really like Facebook as it's really allowed me to connect with old college friends etc (from like 15 years ago), as well as other old acquaintances, and current friends. The friend of friends thing is awesome and is probably what makes facebook so addictive and useful. Pretty hard to find the right John Smith, but if that John Smith knows your old friend Joey Joe Joe Junior Shabadoo, then odds are much better it's the right one. It's almost viral, every time I add a new friend within a few days I seem to get more friend invites.

Oddly I also seem to use it as a sort of secondary email system with some of my friends (probably because they are using Facebook so much also).

I had a fairly high end, new rig (4GB of RAM, Vista Home Premium, Quad Core processor) and I was not satisfied with Crysis at all using a 8800GTS (384MB). At 1600x1050 (default resolution) it was just able to run with Medium - Low settings with some stuttering. I dropped in an 8800GTX Ultra instead (probably the only time in my life I'll ever be able to get away with buying a near top of the line card), and now I can run at High possibly even sneaking some things to Very High.

Once the article actually loads I'd love to see what they came up with for Crysis for less than the price of my video card (of course I'm secretly hoping that it's running at 800x600 on low with a bad framerate to justify my ridiculous purchases!)

My UID is 250133, and I really and truly think that Nintendo is going to do very very well this time. Sony is going to tank, and 360 will probably do okay.

Now I know my UID isn't as 733T or whatever as yours, but I do have to say I've been a gamer for a good long time, and during my gaming I've generally not been a fan of, or have disliked Nintendo's offerings.

This time around though, I really want a Wii, have zero interest in PS3, and have half an eye on the 360...though my PC is holding up fairly well so I can run stuff like Oblivion. I just think Nintendo "gets it" right now. An evolution in graphics just isn't going to cut it this time around.

    All IMO of course...

  10. I bought a $600 plus video game system once... on Why Sony is Ready to Self Destruct · · Score: 1

I actually bought a $600+ video game system once. It was a 3DO. I bought another one 2nd hand (didn't pay full price), it was a NeoGeo. Now the NeoGeo obviously doesn't count :)

Here's the problem, you need mass market appeal to sell games, $600 consoles are not going to be mass market friendly. Especially when the 360 has been out for a lot longer for cheaper, and the Wii of course will be cheaper still, with their nifty new controller.

Bluray, now will that be the edge? PS2 was pricey, but it brought DVD to the table which was still fairly new and shiney. Here's the problem, I don't think Bluray is enough of a jump up from DVD - it's still a little round disc, it still plays movies in the same way. I really don't think the average consumer is going to give a rats arse. Plus the movies sound like they're going to cost a lot more. I don't think they can rely on the "AND IT'S A DVD PLAYER TOO!" thing this time around.

Man, I've never been a Nintendo fan..had a used N64, and a GBA for awhile, that's about it. Brother had a SNES which was some fun. I loved PS2, then XBox. But I really have to say, I think I'm going to have to go with Nintendo this year.

  18. Why this is great for backups... on Amazon's New Storage Service · · Score: 1

People are moaning about how tape is cheaper or HDD is cheaper per GB than this. So they are planning to use that for there backups.

I definitely want an offsite backup for my family photos, this could be a good solution. Sure IN THEORY I could backup to USB Key, HDD, CD-R etc, and in fact I do have a one touch drive. But what happens if my house burns down (fairly unlikely), or worse get's broken into and my shiney looking HDD and PC gets stolen (possible)...bang photos gone.

So what about moving CD's or HDD's offsite or to a safe deposit box? Sure that's great, but here's the thing realistically it'll never happen. Or I might make a backup every six months, and of course a disaster event will take place at 5 months and 25 days or something. Those who are very organized and good at data security can definitely get away with cheaper alternatives, but a one click backup to internet? Something you don't have to worry about after? That's just awesome. Sure Amazon could burn down or go out of business, but in that case I will just have to revert to my own backups, and make new copies right away.

Listen, at the end of the day, you don't *need* to have the latest Movie or whatever. Media is not a necessary part of life. Stop buying the MPAA's and RIAA's stuff plain and simple. I think their monopoly is going to be worn away eventually anyways. It's not nearly as expensive to create media as it used to be. And the young up & comers are going to grow up with a severe disdain for those companies.

Some are going to be quite talented, and some may even have associates who are talented actors, etc. Eventually some decent shows will be released and distributed entirely outside of the MPAA and RIAA reach. It's already happening with music a lot, and with video it is underway as well.

One day the indi version of Star Trek, or heck even Friends is going to pop up. It will become wildly popular and the creators will retain full distribution rights. It will have been created by artists and techies sick of hearing about the MPAA and RIAA so they will gladly keep it away from them. (Plus they will get to keep more money in their own pockets anyways) This success story will be the first of many nails in the MP/RIAA coffins. People say, "hey space adventure is a great show, I bet I could do that too..." There'll be lots of crappy shows which will fizzle and fail. But the best and most popular will do well.

I can even see a broadcast station picking up some of these shows, getting rid of the mainstream stuff and making their own ad deals etc. If they can do this then it opens up indi stuff to the wide world of media consumers and not just tech junkies.

The deal is at the end of the day, this isn't bread we're talking about, or power, or water. These are luxuries and consumer goods that people choose to buy.
