  1. They have to sell commercials on What's Wrong With the TV News · · Score: 3, Insightful

What's wrong with TV news? They have to sell commercial time, so they air only the most sensational stories. Or the spice real news up to be sensational in order to sell commercial time. What's wrong is they claim to be in the business of providing news when they're really in the business of selling commercial time to advertisers. And the need for many viewers to watch these commercials are the reason for the sensational news.

Slashdot is about as guilty. See repeated stories of "bricking" where no devices were irrecoverably harmed, that is, "bricked".

I use OpenOffice.org here at home. Calc actually manages to be MORE annoying in some ways than excel. For example using the delete key pops up a dialog asking you what about the cell you want to delete. And less so in others. Moving/copy cells is less braindead than Excel. It's free. But the documentation is crap.

TBPH, it's not a clear winner over excel.

I got a Nokia N810. It does everything you're asking of it except e-ink. Additionally it does GPS, bluetooth, internet browsing, IM, SSH, has min-SD slots, plays Mahjong, a tetris clone, bomberman, doom, chess, and a bejeweled clone. And anything else you can compile for the maemo operating system (linux).

For me it's a laptop replacement plus a fantastic ebook reader. Tiny, easy one hand operation, no need for an extra light source. Battery lasts 5-7 hours depending on what you're doing. Plays videos quite well too.

For all that, I thought the price was justified.

The result is that anyone who installs the enhanced graphics patch overwrites the windows XP c:\boot.ini file with the EVE client configuration file, bricking the machine on the next boot. Discussion in a couple of forums threads is becoming understandably heated.
This is inaccurate/sensational. I use Windows XP. I play EVE. Last night I installed the "Premium" graphics update and was not affected. The reason seems to be because I have EVE installed on a different drive from my OS drive.

Also, it's not bricking. A repair via install disc will fix it. Booting a linux Live CD (Ubuntu etc) will allow you to re-create your boot.ini.

Bricking == hardware permanently reduced to non-functional status. I.E. only, ever, useful in the future as a brick/paperweight.
