Really - this is SOP in many, if not most places. At my company, anyone with "sensitive" access is immediately revoked upon receipt of written resignation. Period.

A former place of employment was so bad, that when I was leaving on poor terms, I was asked (by the head of HR) for "all the passwords I knew". I had to explain that if I told them to him, I'd still know them and could use them. He was shocked when I informed him that his IS staff would have to figure out how to change a hundred passwords.

It was a great place to leave.

Everything from consumer to prosumer to pro; video, digital or film.

They used to have a store in downtown LA, in The Brewery. I'm not sure why they left, but now I live in their former 6,000 square foot space. I still get mail for them on occasion.

Not contradicting your point, but questioning where gas would not be available. Yes - the article says remote rural areas, but if we can get people to them, then why can't they purchase cylinders of gas or drive a tanker there to a central gas tank locally?

Well, I grew up in a rural area and have some experience with that. The problem is that tanks are bulky, and they shouldn't be transported in a closed vehicle (they belong in a pickup bed, not a back seat). So, if you don't have a pickup or you aren't strong enough to pick up a large cylinder (there's no point in using a small cylinder) you have to have it delivered. The delivery costs are high enough to make people look at other options.

We always used electric water heaters and heated with electricity & wood. The dryer ran on gas because it was such a low user of gas.

I think that movie thing is a brilliant idea. If they'd charge 3 bucks to see a million dollar movie and 15 - 20 to see a 200 million dollar movie, people would just go to see the cheap movies. More cheap movies would be made, usually by indie filmmakers and the big budget crap blockbusters would die out. That sounds great!

Great in theory, but sucky in reality.

They wouldn't lower prices for small movies; they'd charge more for big ones.

Even if it did have USB2, using it would completely kill the CPU - FireWire, on the other hand, has almost zero CPU overhead. A shame, because the Nano is large enough to fit her music collection onto.

Did you possibly mean USB 1.0 or 1.1?

In any case, if you can fit her entire music collection in 4GB, make the initial transfer at night when nobody is using the iBook. At that point, it won't matter how slow it is. Next time she adds a CD to her collection, it won't take much to update the Nano.

I really don't see a USB interface as a big problem.

Hmmmmm. Not so sure I agree with you on that point. To me, "handcarved" has been with non-powered tools, but "handmade/handcrafted" furnature has been "made by hand, not a big factory".

I'm a woodworker, although I do much more metal now, and the vast majority of the work I have done has been with powered tools (table saw, joiner, planer...) I still consider it to all be hand made, as I made it in one-off quantities, with my hands.

Do you have any idea of how dangerous it is to be behind some drooler who enters the freeway while going 40? I see this happen every day. The speed limit on the freeway is between 55 and 70, yet you have to deal with entering at 40 and trying to deal with merging into a lane going 20mph or so faster than you.
