  1. Re:Nothing interesting ever happens. on Rick Berman Doesn't Know Why Nemesis Tanked · · Score: -1
"What about a Star Trek film which details the birth/genesis of The Borg - how they came to be?"

The most interesting part about the Borg is that we *don't* know how they came to be. We've been given subtle hints about it(in First Contact, for instance), but never any real answers.
Introducing the Borg queen was probably the biggest mistake the writers made, because it put a face on the Borg and gave them a sense of humanity. The Borg queen spends more time bickering with Janeway than she does trying to destroy her ship. The Borg were supposed to be brutal conquerors with only one purpose. Now they spend time chatting it up with people they're trying to kill. Any mystique or intrigue about the Borg were lost when Voyager ran into them.
Not knowing about the Borg made them a hell of a lot more interesting, that's for sure.

Fancy? Not really, no. You plug them in and they work. There are no device drivers or computer components to upgrade. You don't have to worry about hardware/software conflicts. You just plug it in and play. At the most, you have to make sure the batteries in your pedals are good.
As far as sound goes, listen to a rack-mounted FX unit and you can get an idea where the "all digital" theme is headed. I've used $1000 rack units that still sound unnatural compared to a good amp. That's not to say this won't be improved somewhere down the line.
    But I guess I'm a purist at heart. {=)

I'm sure the geek culture thinks this is cool, but most musicians will probably shrug and think, "So what?"
And there are the audiophile types who will condemn the ditigal format as sounding too processed and impersonal. There are some things you can do with analog that digital will never be able to touch.

Don't expect this to take off like the next revolution. It will likely be a nifty toy to play with and nothing more.
I know that after playing guitar for over 10 years, I could really care less about cat5 in my guitar. It is more complication than I need when I'm on stage troubleshooting minor problems.

Allow me to play devil's advocate here for a second.

"Since when does the record corporation own a music file that I PAID FOR? Its my stuff, it was when i payed for it and left the store."

Ahh, but you did not pay for a file. You paid for a CD. You also did not pay for the right to distribute the work from that CD to people around the world.
And before you mention fair use rights, note that fair use allows you to make a backup of your own disk for your own private use. It does not allow you to download that backup from someone else. You have to make it yourself.

Unless you are downloading music from filesharing apps, this whole "well poisoning" tactic doesn't affect your rights in the least.

The only benefit I can see to using Open source in embedded components such as your car interface is that you can modify it to your liking, and even distribute those changes.
That being said, if you think supporting a 10 year old OS is bad, just try getting support for custom software which you may or may not have modified well beyond the scope of the original vendor's intent.
And if you decide to use the vendor's default config, then you might as well be using proprietary software.

  10. Gas and breaks on the wheel? on Review Of GM's HyWire Hydrogen Concept Car · · Score: 3, Insightful

Part of the reason these hybrid cars aren't taking off in some circles is because, quite frankly, they look retarded.
People don't want a car that looks like a bubble with three wheels or controls in places they're not accustomed to.
People just want a car! Plain and simple. Most people don't care what is under the hood as long as the car is familiar(controls where they should be, etc..) and they can fuel up anywhere. Cars are meant for convenience as far as most people are concerned. Despite what really bad Sci-fi movies would have you believe, the 21st century just isn't ready for some of these new radical concept designs.

This isn't necessarily true. My earliest memory is of myself looking up from a crib toward the same mirror that hangs on my bedroom wall to this day. I remember a feeling of terror from looking up toward the mirror. All I could see in it was the ceiling. I also remember my door being closed.
I asked my mother about this, and even gave her some specifics about the bedroom(colour of paint, for instance) and the layout of the furniture(position of the crib in the room), and she confirmed it.
I guess I had a thing against mirrors back then. But I also remember a sense of not wanting to be alone in the room.

"If you try to just restore memories you are more than likely making them up (not that you realise you are making them up)."

In my own case, I might believe that if I were someone else listening to this story(not to mention my stupid name ;p).. But since my own mother confirmed my "memory" right down to the colour of paint on the walls at the time, I'm not so inclined to believe that 100%.
