Just because a project was done with the help of M$, it doesn't mean that there is some *nix app that they are targetting ... afterall, what is Gimp? It's more like an Anti-Photoshop.
Also, look at M$ Paint? It's a useless "paint" program that hasn't changed since it was first release ... this would make a great replacement

  9. Open Source on Windows on Open Source on Windows - Boon or Bane for Linux? · · Score: 1

I totally disagree that putting Open Source on Windows will harm Linux.
    Why?
Well, why would someone, who has only ever used WIndows for years, want to jump in and start using Linux, without knowing which applications on *nix are comparable to those on Windows. *Nix applications are not household names (gaim vs ICQ or MSN, Mozilla/Firefox vs. IE).
By porting (or by using VMs), it allows the user to become more familiar with the dark side, err, I mean with *nix.

As for his comments about Firefox, I think he's wrong again. If my memory is correct, Firefox (or well Mozilla) wasn't made to be for Linux. It was started by Netscape, as an Open Source Project ... not a Linux project.

And isn't it a bit hypocritical, to limit where open source can and can't be ported to?

Doesn't a Nuke do more than enough damage already?
And this is coming from the country who is afraid of other countries that are starting up their own nuke programs (Iran, South Korea, India and Pakistan ...), and the same country who invaded Iraq, because of supposed WMD.
Personally, I find it frightening that weapons like this are being researched. Shouldn't they be trying to work on weapons that cause less casualties and destrcution?

I know this is kind of a bad comparison, but that's like buying a Mac vs. buying a Linux based system ... you buy a Mac for the whole system, software AND hardware ... you buy a linux based system 'cause you're too cheap to buy anything else, or you hate M$, AND want to build your own system ... besides those who come to /., I doubt there's a large % of people who can go out and get the TiVo software, and build their own system for it.
