Instead of the GPS, why not.. check to see if they are at school? If those blasted kids are not going to trick you into thinking that they are at school by making it appear as if they are in school... why do they even care about tricking the GPS let alone honoring it?
If he is a slashdot user then he reads the comments, but certainly not TFA. Given his Jeopardy record, It is apparent that he DOES in fact RTFA. Therefore, I concur with 90% confidence that Ken Jennings is not a slashdot reader.
I never said it was unfair. I'm just contributing my experience. The "shitty ambulance lawyer" is disjoint from the conversation.
Anyway, my larger point is that they can still do quite well in the University setting. In fact, they get to refine their asset full time with research. Many of these professors, while not working directly for businesses, make a hefty amount of money as board members for those companies. At least in the tech field. It's no coincidence that a large number of Biotech and Pharmas live around the Kendall Sq. area.
Being outside of the Business world is pretty lucrative too. I was a temp for an agency that put me in many random jobs around MIT. When I had to do reception type work for professors, a lot of time was spent fielding calls from outside companies who needed a consultant.
One notable professor working in the Cancer Research center was away 90% of the time. It was full time work answering his phone and taking care of his office. I would get calls asking how much the hourly rate was for talking with this professor on the phone. It was over $200 just to speak to this man. Knowing this.. he entered the room and my mouth stayed shut:)
And there are potholes. But not as bad as you make it seem. At least compared other Cities that get a good amount of snow. New York and Pittsburgh are two that come to mind. I'm not saying it isn't a problem, but I just want to make it clear to people who are not familiar with the area. I've never once gotten damage from a pothole severe or otherwise. It happens, but I've only heard of it once or twice second hand.
An app for that? I'll whole-heartedly agree with you there. I don't see a reason for that.
But maybe they take advantage of the angst and ego of those Script Kiddies, empowering them to be "real hackers" by doing the tough part and giving them the tools to carry out their operations. Who's to say there is even one "anonymous". Get a group of would be hackers together in secret, let them talk to one other member of a group claiming to be Anonymous, and BAM.. all of a sudden, they are part of Anonymous. It's just a word, a battle cry or flag at this point.
There are people out there with deliberate intentions and incentives to execute these attacks. They are just using the 4chan type to further their goals.
From TFA: "few hundred participants in operations, only about 30 are steadily active, with 10 people who "are the most senior and co-ordinate and manage most of the decisions"
That just about fits this type of hierarchy.
Outside of "terrorism" (if you can call this that), this system is employed time and time again.
1) Person or small group has Political/Economic Agenda that would not benefit Society as a whole, but needs to engineer support. 2) They get a few Champions that back a stance on a cause that is unrelated, but has a large number of supporters (immigration, abortion, same sex marriage, FREEDOM OF SPEECH). It's best when it's a black/white yes/no issue that has a population divided roughly 50/50. That way, the support group is large, but the opposition is as well. Without a viable opposition, you cannot rally together for a cause. 3) Wrap your own agenda into the priorities of this "front" clause. Bam. You've created an army fighting for something they don't care about.
Not sure what my point was here really. Just noticing a pattern. Though I would love to believe in the idea of true "freedom fighters" who genuinely feel they are protecting essential Liberties, I cannot help to think that there has to be a selfish person at the top of it all.
As much as we would certainly do well to have more jobs here, and as much as we may object to hiring people abroad, I don't know if this alone is enough to call it "unethical". We are a wealthier nation employing poorer ones. People living here don't like it, because it means less for them. Unethical? I guess it depends what you mean. I would not say the companies doing are doing it for pro-ethical reasons.
Assuming we are talking about "tech related" outsourcing, as opposed to things like call-centers... I cannot argue that it really is costing jobs here. I cannot find enough qualified people to fill tech jobs here. Past employers are reaching out, asking me if I can refer any friends that are decent software developers. All such friends are already gainfully employed. This "bad" economy. It's a strange one. I really do feel that it's disproportionately affecting the poor and the blue collar workers. People I know in Tech, aren't really having trouble finding work. Family members that have not been to or finished College? Forget it. It's rough.
To play as my own Devil's advocate. One might say, the exploitation of overseas workers is unethical, especially when we force them to specialize for our needs, and then jump ship when a cheaper bidder comes along. Also, I've found the quality of work with outsourced workers to be lacking. I'm talking BAD code. I'm not sure if the coders themselves are poor quality, or they are pressured to be "faster, not better". Communication is a pain, and turn-around time is poor due to time zone difference.
Yeah, but if stimulate the entire brain, certainly you're just as likely to stimulate the "idiot" areas too. So, those magnetic hats we're gonna see? It's not that they don't work. THEY DO! It's just that they cancel themselves out. Or maybe it would be more of an idiot testing hat. Those with more "idiot" areas to stimulate will become even more moronic.
I would think that from these modified mosquitoes, the offspring with the "least reduced" lifespans, will win out. Rinse and repeat, and over time, they will re-evolve to achieve the most efficient lifespan for the species, which will be probably exactly what it is now, barring any change in the environment.
Even if the kid did NOT cheat, how did this news spread beyond their living room? It's mind boggling to think of all the filters this garbage has to pass through in order to get to the front page of Slashdot. Each point along the way someone had to say, "Yeah, this is worth another minute of my energy.. why don't I pass this on"?
The buttons look great. And it looks cleaner. But the spacing on the left has to go. I believe the top margin on those LI elements should only be applied to: nav.left_menu li:first-child
Also, making this site more readable on wide screen browsers would be good. Take a hint from news sites. Having to scan across > 1000 pixels is tiring. I don't want to have to fiddle w/ browser widths just for slashdot. The comments don't look so bad at this width, it's the summary.
This probably contributes to the "too much white space" complaint I've read a few times on this thread.
We're gonna need more than that.. population growth. If when we die, we get our own planet, we're gonna run out!

What is "First Post", Alex?

Firebug says different. I hit http://www.facebook.com/ and see a post only to "https://" for the actual login.
Small tangent, but on topic in my opinion. The first speaker. Is is accent really so strong that it needs subtitles?
I'd actually WELCOME more potholes in Boston. Maybe it would slow some of those crazies down!

Then the City's gonna be looking for a lot of potholes at yo momma's house.
Who needs one when you can build a City-sized DOS cannon.
Well said in so few words.
"Is it so hard to tweak the Internet to make DDoS impossible?"
Yes.

I threw away my hotmail account 10 years ago.
Indeed.

Can I just wear a hat with magnets in it? Or would that kind of be like stabbing yourself in the face and calling it acupuncture?

I agree. Except with the horrible part. Less space in the left hand nav would be welcome.
