  4. Re:Sea level rising? Probably not on Larsen Ice Shelf Collapses · · Score: 1

The ice that is already floating on the surface of the ocean will not cause a rise, just as the parent story illustrates. The problem would come (if it comes) when and if a large floe of ice actually comes off the Antarctic continent and goes into the ocean. Lots of people seem to be forgetting that there really is a continent under all that ice down south, and the pretty ice cap isn't just floating on the surface of the ocean.

I saw someone illustrate their 'point' by having someone fill up a cup with ice and then top it off with water to show that the water level drops. All well and good, except that the proper experiment would have you filling up your bathtub to the rim, then dumping 100lbs of ice on the edge so it'll flow into the tub as it melts. I don't think you'll see the water level drop.

At the risk of becoming utterly flamed to cinders, I took the Win2k Accelerated exam because I already had the NT4 MCSE. I actually prepared for it, and I was in and out of the testing facility in less than two hours. There were four other people in the room I was in when I got there, and they were all still there when I left. The guy at the desk said that he was surprised I passed, since he'd only been seeing about a 20% pass rate at most.

That said, the tests themselves are pretty easy, as long as you've actually been using the tech. If you are doing the tests individually, which you'll have to do now that the Accelerated exam has expired, just make sure you've actually studied the material and done some hands-on. I've heard varying reports on how difficult the various exams are, but that shouldn't matter as long as you're prepared.

When I worked at Barnes & Noble in the mid 90's, we'd get those massive rubber bands which bound up misc. parcel shipments. Those were about the size of what you describe, maybe a foot long at rest and maybe 1/2" wide. You really couldn't pull them tight even if you spread both arms.

Rather than zinging people with them, we'd have skills tests with them. I got really good at banking them off an air conditioning unit in the rafters 30 feet overhead, draping the band over a rafter, then shooting it down with a followup band. Harder than you'd think. We'd also twang Coke cans off piles of boxes at 20 paces. Those were the days (of no money).

When you get into issues of sports figures, the common wisdom of supply/demand seems to go out the window. The only real value a sports figure has, whether he is Michael Jordan, Tiger Woods, or Michael Vick, is that they put butts in seats and eyes on TV screens. If it can be argued that A-Rod enriches the owners of the team and the city and the networks, ad infinitum, to a degree of X, then he should be getting a percentage of X. That percentage, of course, is negotiable, and would seem to depend on how many butts and eyes can be attributed to a given person.

Yes, it can be said that this job of raising revenues is still an issue of supply/demand, in that there is only one of each of those sports stars out there, but it is more than the issue of simply saying "There are X people qualified to do this job, and it takes this much preparation, therefore it is worth Y". It is a lot of intangibles that go beyond simply an ability to catch a ball or make a dunk.

You would have to put a huge amount of effort into doing this. The thing that keeps this from being a big problem is the fact that only one positive feedback can result from any given buyer-seller relationship on Ebay. In other words, if I buy three items as separate auctions on Ebay, I can only give the seller a net 1 positive feedback. I can certainly submit a positive for the other two transactions, but they aren't counted in the total. So, you'd have to go thru the trouble of setting up a separate ID for every single feedback point you got this way.
