I'd teach too, but as a visiting teacher to a High School. I'd teach one class a day, maybe two, and then go back to my research. Hell, I'd do it for free, but you think any school system would go for it? HA. Sorry Mr. PhD Sir, you didn't pass this teaching certification course, we can't let you in to the classroom because we don't find you qualified to teach high school biology.
EXACTLY! Not everyone should go to college. I know far to many "business" majors, or "communications" majors who leave college after 4-5 years of drunkenness (see face-book...) with a huge student loan and expect to earn 50K+ per year. Then the reality of the marketplace hits like a ton of bricks and you have these 'grads' earning a bit above minimum wage working retail or something unrelated to their college education.
There is an unhealthy stigma that goes along with people not going to college, and I disagree with it. College, while wonderful for some, is not good for others. 2 year trade schools, or apprenticeships should be encouraged far more than they are. And this is relevant to the topic because the students are told by their teachers that if they don't go to college, they will be useless to society. (or at least thats how I was taught)
There is a problem with the teaching system in the United States, and it starts with the students being far too empowered. If little Johnny does something wrong, teacher (rightly!) punishes Johnny, he cries to Mommy, and Mommy sides with Johnny. Teacher's hands are tied and so they stop caring. I have plenty of friends that are teachers, and this is a common story. There are more problems, but I firmly believe that the problem originates at discipline.
What he did was assign the previously "undefined" integer with a defined symbol that means the same thing. Infinity in both directions.
While interesting, the concept has little use.
From the article "Imagine you're landing on an aeroplane and the automatic pilot's working," he suggests. "If it divides by zero and the computer stops working - you're in big trouble. If your heart pacemaker divides by zero, you're dead.". Now, instead of getting an error message, the computer give a 0 with a line through it, and THEN an error message.
ABS is very useful, maybe not to you, but what about your friend, who is driving your car. He's not as good of a driver as you, and he doens't know that you need to pump the brakes to stop during an emergency.
Removing a safety feature like ABS, traction control, or airbags permanently is a dumb thing to do. Those options are there to help the general public be safer in thier cars. The accident rate may not be going down, but the number of cars on the road is at an all time high, and still climbing. So either A.) drivers are getting better (HA! HA HA HA HA), or B.) cars are safer and easier to drive thanks to technology.
Reconsider removing ABS or other safety features. (And reconsider getting a FORD!)
This phone looks like it trys to do everything. WiFi, GPRS, and make phone calls too. The battery life on it will be HORRIBLE, or it will be huge, quite possibly both. I had two Sharp Zauruses, (Zauri?) and I tried using the Qtopia desktop on both. No, I have not tried a recent version of it, but the version I used was NOT ready for a generic user, much less in a semi-mission critical application like a cellphone.
I see this crashing and burning. No consumer (read "average 20 something") will want this. It just doesn't look good, and the OS doesn't inspire confidence.
By no-means am I trying to demean you or your goals (first year chem grad-student), but that is very much a niche sounding field. Personally, I would go to a FBI field office and ask them, tell them what you want to do, and unless you find an ass they'll probabbly help you (as it can help them).
Also, I saw ITT-Tech advertising with just such a program, so that might degrade your college-graduate status. (Damn it, that piece of paper is WORTH SOMETHIN')
Frankly, I think that the much-bally-hoooed "age of digital warfare" has been upon us, but we just see it as furniture. Spyware and malware is or should be illegal, finding the perp should be an FBI enforcement issue. I doubt highly that terrorist organizations are sitting on thier collective laurels with respect to digital and information warfare. I'm SURE the army has 'information warriors' in thier propaganda arm.
Anywho, best of luck to you my fellow Gen-Xer (Are we still called that? Or maybe echo-boomer).
**Disclaimer: I am NOT a gamer. I enjoy simple D-pad+four button games.***
My view on this whole Sony/MSFT vs Nintendo war is that Nintendo is trying to be a console, while Sony/MSFT are trying to be full blown entertainment devices. And I think Nintendo has chosen the right niche. Personally, I don't see myself buying an XBox360, or PS3, but I do see myself buying a Revolution. Nintendo has openly said that it will have emulation ability, so that you can play your old games (ie super mario, etc) on the revolution. I see this as the killer app. If the revolution costs 100USD, I'll buy one, just to have the ability to play older nintendo games on my nice tv. I assume they will recompile or do some graphics magic to make it look good on a 16:9 set, and so this is a 'good thing'.
Nintendo has a HUGE library of very entertaining games, and if you look at the demographic, the people who played super mario and had the original NES and SNES are now in the position of making purchases, and they will buy the Revolution. I know that I don't have the time to sit down and play Halo, but I do have the time to sit down and poink around with Mario Cart, or even Contra. The reason those simple Atari games you see at walmart are selling is because people want simple games again.
I guess I'm getting old (I'm 23!!!) but games sure aren't what they use to be.
Windows Vista is coming out as a 're-write' of the code, but I don't believe they are recoding the real legacy parts of the Windows code. I think Microsoft needs to do away with native legacy support like Apple did, but keep it around with emulation. If WINE can reverse engineer the Windows layer, than why can't Microsoft, with access to the source?
Is the shuttle program just forgotten about (due to war, bird flu, etc) and the workers just making work to look busy? We ALL know that the shuttle program is going to be scrapped; the Soyuz capsules were purchased because of it! Literally BILLIONS of dollars are being poured down the drain (no, fixing an old shuttle is not new science). The only thing I can see this being used for is to train new scientists.
Didn't google used to stand for free information for all? Now its, free information for all, but if someone asks, we change the information. If I ask google about 'revolutions in China' I bet I get some answers that would be filtered in China. What ever happened to the 'WHOLE' Truth? I understand this company must abide by local laws, but why not just disable service to someone who does not wish to follow YOUR "don't be evil" strategy? How much money does Google really make in China? Is it worth selling out?
I think the news networks will eat this up like mad. You know those crappy sat phones they have now? What if the next generation of these devices included a high-performance mpeg4 encoder and sent them up at 200kbps? Maybe its not a real sat truck, but if they would be like the suitcase ones. Look at this page, they even mention INMARSAT's new service.
If I can burn it to a DVD, watch it on ANY DVD player, and treat it as if it were mine (IE, let my friend borrow the disc), then yes, I'll pay 8 dollars/movie. Otherwise, I'll keep my netflix subscription thank you very much.
I read the article. Is this for EVERYONE in the country? What will happen for all the users of these phones. What about tracfone, they've been at it for YEARS, does this affect them? I need clarification or some unfounded speculation, both would be nice.
If it slows my browser down. I hate ads that double my browser memory footprint. There are many doubleclick ads that do this.
If it is intrusive. I cannot stand within text ads. Never EVER put an ad in the middle of a paragraph. EVER. If you do, I won't look at it, and I'll block it if I can. So does my mother, the demographic the ad is targeted for. Any ad that takes over (pop-over).
All other ads, I respect. The advertisers must make money, and I do click on ads I find interesting. I feel it is important to support those who support things I like.
"apparent cost" my friend. A PHB is going to look at Linux that is free and say "well, you get what you pay for" and think Linux is crap. If you say it costs about as much as "winders" and can do more then he can go to his higher up and say "well Bob, though I may have never heard of this 'line-ux' thing other than for big servers and nerdy guys with pocket protectors, it may seem like a good idea"

Be careful, or aeroplanes might just start falling out of the sky. And don't forget the pacemakers! They just might switch to hummingbird mode!
But seriously, great comment
I can make up numbers too...

I believe you are over estimating the intelligence of the average burger flipper/lettuce placer by at least an order of magnitude.
snip propane to (via a catalytic process) produce CO2 and heat

Also know as burning propane.

Why did I hear the Imperial March when I read this story? Now MSFT will try to strong-arm the alliance into recognizing that MSWord is the only way.

NEWTON part 2??!?!
iNewton?
Now that would turn some heads.
Don't they write software for Windows, which *GASP!!* is owned by the SAME company as Internet Explorer. Woah. Now here's some news!
In other news, Hershey funded a study that eating chocolate is not only good for you, but makes you a better person.

So thats why it costs money
Now slashdot is quoting THE ONION as real news. Wow, I want my subscription money back.
Well, if its being built, then they MUST have some sort of plan. Its not like we're in the tech bubble again.
