    Because if IE7 can handle transparent PNGs and lots of sites start to use it, millions of IE6 users will upgrade. And when they upgrade there is the danger that they might upgrade to Mozilla and not IE7.

    You're kidding right? If IE7 were to be released it would be downloaded because the little popup thingy in the systray says so...and I'm pretty confident it won't inform the user of the alternative.

    If you look there, it has stats on that box in a language I do not know, but there's this line: Operating System : Windows XP; en-US; rv:1.5
    And given that these appear to be identical, wow. I'm really not trying to promote linux or bash Microsoft here, either. I'm very impressed/intrigued a Windows server is able to hold itself up so well, as I'm sure most /.ers are.

    That language is Dutch, and I guess it said so right below "jou computer", which is (improper) dutch for "your computer"....so i guess you must be running XP then :P

    Let's be honest. It's not googles principles that made them successful. THey came along, took a week internet tool (the search) and did it better than anyone else. It's the fact that they did it better than everyone else and got the press for that which caused them to be the big name.

    That's one way of looking at it. But take a look beyond the product, the search engine, at the way Google has profiled itself as a company. Basically what you get is a decent product, no crap, period. That in itself, especially in the world of computers, is rare indeed. No hidden catch, no EULA nonsense. And guess what, it works. Decent longterm thinking, good word-of-mouth advertising, and what's even more important, consumer confidence. I *trust* google not to mess with me or my computer. They're the *good guys* in an industry filled with evil. And to achieve that kind of reputation takes a lot of patience..

    so offer different downloads.

    - 1 package with only the barebone browser.

    - 1 package with the browser and x of the most used plugins. perhaps an option during install to manually select which plugins to install or not(custom install)

    - 1 package with the browser and the whole shebang.

    ofc some sort of verification would be needed before a 3rd party plugin would be added to an "official" download...

    Drop a typed letter into the mailbox (not the one in front of your house) addressed to a newspaper


    Making sure you have used a typewriter/printer that's commonly available to everyone, same for the paper and the ink, while ascertaining you don't leave any fingerprints, fibers or genetic material on the paper, the envelope, and let's certainly not forget the stamp...

    All in all, about as much effort as it would take to get an account with one of those "anonymous surfing" companies who are legally bound to keep your information a secret blah blah, unless law enforcement blah blah, you get the idea.

    on first boot, go into safe mode, install your favorite firewall product.

    incidentally, this also avoids the whole "first startup routine" with the friggin' loud music and stuff that comes with XP. Why create a bloody 2nd Admin account if the first one works perfectly well anyway?

    ofc. it's legal. a heck of a lot more legal than all the *real* britney spears mp3's on the networks anyway. basically what they're doing is sharing non-copyrighted material on a p2p network, which happened to be what the network was for *officially* anyway. just because the filenames are bogus doesn't mean anything, p2p networks hardly come with guarantuees....

    yet, despite the fact that they completely screwed up the whole storyline, somehow Enterprise manages to turn off my brain and keep me happily distracted for the duration of 1 and occasionally 2 entire episodes at a time, whereas during Mutant X or Andromeda i get bored after 5 minutes and start reading Slashdot trolls.

    Then again, it might have something to do with the hot model/actress turned into a Vulcan icequeen...

    Not to mention- this guy is supposed to be on medication daily- and was off it. I am glad they picked him up for his own safety and that of others. This way he doesn't have to use the temp insanity defense if he 'accidentaly' kills somebody while he's off his meds. You see, in that state, he is not responsible for his own actions.

    So he decides out of free will to stop taking the darn pills, and if he were to go haywire he'd not be responsible? Which state would that be?

    so what do you propose, the poor cop sitting in his car waiting for the system to respond, while his colleague is trying to keep his eyes on 3 people at the same time, all of whom *might* draw a weapon, gun him down and take off in their car at any given time? One would think that in a job where a split second can mean the difference between a dead cop and a living cop only the best gear is good enough...and in the long run those dead cops cost a lot more than those notebooks did.

    They are not in business to make you guys feel good about them. They are in business to make money.

    Yeah, and the two are, like, totally mutually exclusive, right? Believe it or not, but word-of-mouth is still the most effective form of advertising ever, and the best way to get that is to keep customers happy. In this case, google relies a lot on people telling each other just how cool this search engine is, and how quickly it loads, and how you're not spammed to death with advertisements, and guess what, it bloody works! Every person in my social circle who owns a computer knows google, and that includes some seriously digitally handicapped individuals....hi mom!
