Iirc, both the more recent Need for Speeds and Grid had "real" cars as well as damage modeling(to an extent anyway). Especially in Grid I had a serious tendency of finishing with a car that looked nothing like the one i started off with;-)
If 1 out of every 10 people are blind, and 1 out of every 10 blind people want to play video games, thats 1 person for every 100 they are catering too.
Assuming non-blind people want to play videogames 10/10...
Really? Is it that hard to understand the opinion a pretty large chunk had of the US after you elected GW not once but *twice*? Think of Obama receiving the price as a way for the world to express its thanks to the american people for growing at least a teeny tiny bit of fucking sense.
On the other hand, it would have been hilarious to see what would have happened had McCain/Palin made the cut. Can figures for popularity actually go into the negative?
The CEO of Exxon is the CEO of a company that provides an invaluable service to the entire world.
Holy fuck. That did it. You just destroyed what remained of my faith in humanity.
Free market philosophy, fine. I may not agree on all aspects, but it's a valid starting point for a debate. But now we're actually supposed to be grateful to oil companies?
And if Exxon manipulates governments less than this conspiracy of evil mad scientists...I feel really sorry for all those lobbyists who'll be out of work soon.
So what you're saying is that not only is he shouting about it, he's actually putting his, and people who feel the same way, money where his mouth is.
Yet this is somehow a grand conspiracy.
And unless Mr. Gore singlehandedly worked out the Kyoto treaty for all parties involved I don't quite see where your claim that he created the market comes from.
Speaking of which, I'm working on a new product. Sand you can stick your head in but which doesn't hurt your eyes. Should make a killing on the american market.
Thus you have people who crow on about how great 7 is compared to Vista. In some cases, it is people who used Vista and had a bad experience because of an old computer or unsupported hardware, but don't with 7. In other cases, it is people who never used Vista because they were sure it was horrible, but tried 7 and discovered they rather liked the new Windows. They probably would have liked Vista, had they tried it.
So no, there really isn't a major change with 7, just a change in perceptions. It has been refined a bit, for example it works better on systems with 1 gig of RAM whereas Vista really didn't, and 7 seems to be more responsive in the UI (supposedly it has better multithreading of that), but it is a minor refinement. I find that I like 7 because I liked Vista, it is just an improvement on that.
I installed Vista on my pc a while ago. It did a ton of shit I didn't want it to do, refused to execute the most simple commands without asking a ton of questions and was all in all an extremely negative experience. Conclusion: Vista = shite.
Now Windows 7, on the same pc. Quick install, all hardware recognized, no silly questions. Conclusion: 7 is ok and gets to stay.
You may attribute the failure of Vista to some sort of conspiracy, but fact is that when it came out it was a piece of shite that refused to behave. That may have been fixed in subsequent service packs, but by then it had already lost a good chunk of the customers that decided to stick with XP.
Toddlers are not harmed by mother's belief in astrology. A 2 year old is perfectly capable to defend his/her own personality and also tell parents what their personalities should be like. They are harmed by junk food, lack of exercise and lack of proper supervision in the presence of dangerous objects. You are accusing two people of stupidity and yet your own skills in the same area (parenting) are lacking in much more fundamental way.
If it means that certain undesirable behaviour is accepted because it is "part of his personality" then yes, the toddler is getting harmed in a way.
Spam is sent because it is profitable. No matter what you tell yourself, spam isn't sent to you to piss you off, flood your inbox, waste your time, or anything like that. Spam is sent to make money.
Hence spam is an economic problem, and if you want to truly deal with it, you need an economic solution. If spamming ceases to be profitable, then there will cease to be spam. The spammers just want to get paid, that's all.
Houses are burglared because it is profitable. No matter what you tell yourself, burglary isn't committed to piss you off, piss on your bed, scare your dog or anything like that. Burglaries are committed to make money.
Hence burglary is an economic problem, and if you want to truly deal with it, you need an economic solution. If burglary ceases to be profitable, then there will cease to be burglaries. The burglers just want to get paid, that's all.
Bonus points for saying that out loud at a decent pace without tripping over your words;-)
If you're gullible enough to believe it, which carries more weight?
1) Don't be an asshole because the world will be a better place if we all do.
2) Don't be an asshole or you'll go to hell and burn for all eternity.
Hmm, lessee. 1) sounds like an evaluation made by a conscious intelligent being. 2) portrays a level of reasoning that can be matched by a dog (don't piss on the carpet or bosslady will smack you with the newspaper).
You're a fan of disorganized religion, eh? How's that work? You get lost on your way to church, and when you get there, the priest has NO idea where he saw God last, much less where he is now? The name of the GOd or goDs change all the time, as does their message(s)? The priest keeps forgetting to put pants on, but that's ok because the pulpit will cover up the naughty bits if he can ever find it...
Hmm... yes, this does sound more entertaining than an organized religion. Where can I sign up? Oh, you lost the form? Well... call back if you find it...
The roots of protestantism lie in disorganized religion. They rejected the concept of needing an organization with priests and a lot of crap standing between them and their god, and took the right to read and interpret the bible back into their own homes.
How hard is it to make up one's own mind on what one believes, and then act based on those beliefs? There you go, disorganized religion.
What will our bodies learn from our consuming this stuff? Maybe, because it was never "alive", we won't "learn" anything from eating it. Eventually it would most likely retard our mental capabilities/development. For some reason, Idiocracy comes to mind....
Ehmm, lessee:
Current situation: go to supermarket/butcher, buy slabs of meat, prepare, eat. Future situation: go to supermarket/butcher, buy slabs of meat, prepare, eat.
So what are we learning right now that we won't be learning in the future? Unless you, being the apex-predator you are, go off into the woods every day to kill your dinner.
I do agree on the Idiocracy part though. There do seem to be more retards around these days.
Check your power companies website, has their production of MW decreased? Call me when you see the company making less watts each year after year. How would they make increases in profits yearly if they sell less product, jack up prices by 5% yearly?
My power company, who also happens to be my employer, invested a big pile of cash in solar panel production and research. So we're going to make increasing profits by giving people the ability to directly compete with us on power production.
Back to you Jim!
(yes, we also built several more plants, with more in the pipeline. reality sucks)
Humans may or may not be contributing to global warming. The problem at hand is that those on one side of the issue have been caught cooking the books. If you believe that AGW is a clear and present danger, you should be at the front of a torchlight parade to lynch the Hockey Team.

Ah, yes, because playing a political he said/she said game is top priority when it comes to keeping the temperature below a certain point in order to avoid moving all the coastlines a big ass distance inward.
It's funny how there's really very few people(except some really serious crackpots) debating that the planet is warming up and that a lot of people are going to end up fucked up if we don't stop it, yet all the energy seems to be focused on finding out who is to blame.
You're standing in the middle of the road at night. There's a set of headlights hurtling towards you. Do you:
a) get the fuck out of the way b) blame Ford for the bad brakes on the car c) blame the driver for having 2 glasses of wine with dinner d) blame the politicans on the other side(dunno for what, but who needs a reason anyway?)
Like I said, it may really be a mental illness but if so it must be clinically diagnosed and treated. Otherwise it's just a convenient scapegoat to hide behind rather than learning how to socialize properly.
And what treatment would that be?
And yes, there's a very large overlap between the symptoms of Aspergers and those of a total dick. Just for the record, I was diagnosed as well, and the treatment they suggested was to stick me somewhere in the middle of nowhere with a bunch of other authists/dicks. Somehow I didn't quite see how one would learn to function in the real world by running away from it, so I happily declined the offer.
Since its crap, that means no one will pirate it. In the end, its real simple. If an application is being pirated, by definition, it is not crap. If its pirated, pirates are attributing some value to it. Otherwise pirates wouldn't want it. The mere fact someone pirated the application means the application is valued. "Crap" is not valued.
Sorry, but your argument is flawed. Believe it or not, there are people out there that get games off of pirate sites to evaluate if they're actually any good, or even just to check if they'll even work (I'm looking at you, Fallout 3), before making the decision to purchase them or not. And even then the pirate release will often work better than the offficial one because the DRM mucks things up.
Legal? No. Lost sale? No. A direct result of software companies selling heaps of crap and game review sites being totally unreliable? Heck yeah.
Now please excuse me while I get off of your 5-digit lawn.
You buy an Xbox 360. You plug it in. You go through the setup screens, then crate an Xbox Live account, which binds you to Microsoft's EULA, which specifically states that you are not allowed to mod the console. You mod the console anyway. You get banned for violating the EULA.
Simple, logical, legal. Lawsuits like this simply clog the American legal system.
So after they accept your money they get to tack on additional conditions to the use of the product you already paid for...and that is simple, logical and legal.
A turn based strategy gives you large or infinite time to plot each turn, while a real time strategy game may give you a fraction of a second. However they are, fundamentally the same at their core.
Ehhmmm, not really. Take, for example, games like the X-Com series or Jagged Alliance. An individual unit that is in hiding during your turn may come out, throw a grenade, moon you and duck back into cover all in the same turn, with the end result of you still not being able to return fire.
All these games do implement some sort of reaction fire, but in a number of cases you don't actually have any control over your units during that phase, so not quite the same thing as an RTS.
You left out the option some other parts of the world use...like all the utilities in western europe.
Split the infrastructure and the product. Infrastructure is owned by the public, through a number of ways. Companies offering a product can use the existing cables/pipes/whatever to bring their product to market.
So far we've done it for the phonelines, electricity and gas, and it looks like cable is going to go next. I can already pick from over a dozen ISP's through DSL, wonder how many more will pop up when there's cable infrastructure capable of handling a 100Mbit pipe ready and waiting.
There's only so many times you can hear things like "You've just got to snap out of it" or "Your life really isn't that bad, pull yourself together" before you simply give up trying to explain things to people and keep yourself to yourself.
Note that I'm speaking from second-hand experience; a close personal friend has some serious long-term mental health problems, including depression.
As someone with first-hand experience, sucking it up and forcing myself to get out of bed, into a shower and out into the world was a necessary part of getting my life back on track. I'll be the first to admit that a real depression requires proper professional medical care, but I have also seen many cases of soft social workers who encourages patients to feel sorry for themselves, use their illness as an excuse for every possible shortcoming they may have etc.
As with all things, the truth is somewhere in the middle. Some people need a lot of medicine and therapy, some need a swift kick in the butt, and some need a combination of both.
We (people in the US) would appreciate it very much if you (people in the rest of the world) wouldn't make ridiculous generalizations about our language, education and culture based on the ignorant rantings of one Slashdot troll.
We don't. Instead we generalize based on who you elect as president.
I don't understand how it is "far more extraordinary" to build an open source project and oversee it for many years than it is to create one of the most successful businesses in the world and oversee it for many years.
Running a business is a proven concept and is based on people who are generally physically close to each other exchanging their ideas and work in exchange for monetary compensation.
Running the development of an operating system based on volunteers, most of which you will never meet face to face, with no real compensation expect for personal satisfaction...quite something else.
