It is not showing their displeasure that I find the most important, it is that as long as their mobile phones provide a direct link to the web, the government can't lay down the machinegun fire without every western news network showing it on tv 5 minutes later.

Our press is still free to make fun of the government, and whoever happens to be running the opposition loves it that way. Heck, where would Wilders be without the press? (Not gonna link the guy, his haircut is horribly NSFW or anywhere else)

The one place where internet coverage really really sucks is local coverage. Newspapers completely dominate that niche, even now. That's why small town newspapers are so pervasive: that news isn't available anywhere else, and even a weekly paper has far more actual content than the pathetic little 30 minute news spots the tv stations do...In my experience, the TV and radio stations tend to lift everything from the newspapers anyway (which is getting easier, now that the papers are putting things online so quickly.)

Considering the local newspaper, crappy as they may be, publishes news updates on their websites dozens of times a day...I'd say we've got a decent amount of synergy going on already. And this is in fact in the Netherlands btw.

The big advantage of the web is that I can have the website of my local newspaper and a website with inside information on the goings-on in Iran side by side, keeping track of both the backyard and the way over there at the same time, from the convenience of a lazy chair.

Stick to the original question: What is the monentary benefit from legalization of marijuana (private sector profits, revenue from taxation, cost benefits from ending law enforcement) versus the monentary cost -- health care, loss of productivity, and secondary effects (crime, addiction, etc).

Let's see, in countries where pot is legal/condoned, actual use is typically lower than in countries where it's illegal. So the results of legalizing pot would be:
    - No more need for law enforcement to chase pot smokers/dealers.(won't save any money though, plenty of other stuff for them to go after).
    - Income from taxes
    - Less pot smokers in general

From what I understand, in some countries you can take indefinite "sick" leave, without doctor's note nor explanation. After your regular leave is up, you then earn 50%. After a period, the gov't pays it. When you're "better", you can just show back up to work, and they're obliged to give you either your original position back, or a comparable one. I knew someone like that. He suffered from depression, didn't leave the house for 2 years, and was still getting paid. He went back to work for a few months, and then the "depression" started up again. I think it was more that he was abusing the system, but there are plenty of people who do that. I prefer to work for pay. I don't feel society owes me anything, unless I do something for them in return.

In the Netherlands it works a *bit* like that, except that there is a separate institution with independant doctors, and after a certain amount of time or a certain amount of sickdays over a year you have to check in with one of those. Said doctor is is still bound by doctor-patient confidentiality, so they're not allowed to tell your employer what is wrong with you, but they will try to bust you if you're gaming the system.

They'll also try to advice the company on what measures might be taken to mediate the issue and if the problem is/might be work-related(yay for bacterial colonies growing in the airco of a callcenter).
