Indeed. I currently work under several project managers all making claims on my time. So lately we have a very simple system for settling disputes...whoever's ahead on the cookie index gets to claim me first;-)
Except that EVE is pretty terrible at doing any kind of tactical combat (the best description I've read is that EVE is basically paper-rock-scissors in space).
Mwah, it's not all that bad, and there's quite a lot of room for smart tactical decision making as well as for massive cock-ups. Especially in really small scale fights invidual pilot skill can allow a smaller vessel to prevail against several larger ones.
Besides, it's not just rock-paper-scissors, more like rock with the right gun beats scissors, unless scissors happens to go fast enough, etc. etc.
How, in your eyes, can someone not allowed to leave a group or stop funding all the actions of that group, be considered responsible in the same fashion, and to the same degree, as someone who signs up to take a more active part?
You're standing by and allowing it to happen. Let's for a second leave the whole libertarian foam-at-the-mouth "i'm being forced to pay taxes or they will shoot me" debate out of it and focus on the 3 other ways in which one can influence the direction a nation is headed.
1. Voting. You have 1 vote, just like every other member of the electorate, so there's only so much any single individual can do from that angle. 2. Informing and lobbying. Get the word out. Participate in protests. Create websites to provide information. Scream from rooftops. Whatever. 3. Run for office. Pretty self-explanatory.
And before everyone starts screaming...take a look at those pirate party guys in Sweden. They're not rich, they're not influential, and yet somehow they manage to have a serious impact on a political subject they feel strongly about...and all that in one of those evil socialist hippy countries in Europe. If they can do it, why can't you?
My answer would be that a good chunk of the US folks posting here on slashdot might pretend to be some sort of intellectual elite, but when push comes to shove it all boils down to simple selfish greed. It doesn't matter what's good for the country or good for the people, it matters what's good for *you*, and that's how the jackasses in washington manage to keep the country neatly divided into 2 camps, both of which house a huge chunk of people completely unwilling to what the other side has to say and find some sort of compromise in the middle.
As for the DEA officer being more responsible than someone who votes against the drug laws...what makes you think someone with his insider knowledge didn't vote against it as well?/rant
I've found their ads to be the least annoying on the internet. The reason I find their ads the least annoying is because 9 times out of 10 they only have text and no irritating graphics or flash crap.
Really? I find them to be incredibly annoying since they're so well tailored to my personal interests that I might actually be inclined to....click on them.
The AC was half-right. Your friend is actually sounds fairly lenient in individual punishments and likely doesn't see himself as an asshole. But, he does work to restrict people's freedom to use drugs as they see fit.
He himself may not publish misleading propaganda equating pot with crack, or confiscate vehicles from casual pot smokers, or jail people whose only crime was to make their own alcohol, but he's part of the same industrial machine and has to be considered as an interchangeable, equally-guilty part in activities that he ignored, if not participated in.
The war on drugs is pretty much a scam, where it isn't outright fraud. What that makes people who participate in it is an exercise for the reader, but it doesn't get much better than 'unwitting patsy' and goes all the way up to 'complicit in murder for terrorist goals'.
That DEA officer, like any officer in the various branches of the police, has as his job to enforce the laws that were put into place by congress, whose members were democratically elected by the american people. So I'd say he shares about the same amount of blame as....pretty much anyone?
Surely the best way would be to download a torrent from The Pirate Bay in front of the Judge, leave it downloading during the trial (no intervention), and then once it was complete, show that you downloaded a copyrighted piece of material.
I suggest they go to "Porn -> Movies" for the in-trial example usage of the website.
To be honest, I would like to see how they can defend against the "assisting making available" argument, apart from the fact that this charge seems so ridiculous. They're not committing copyright infringement. They're not making the copyrighted files available. Nooo, they're just allowing people to make available themselves.
Immediately after which the lawyer defending them would create a torrent of his own of the trial's proceedings and seed it, demonstrating where the content is coming from and where it goes.
True poetic justice would be for these corrupt, callous judges to serve their sentences in the same kind of environment to which they were happy to dispatch juvenile defendants.
Also operated on commercial grounds? Because the very concept of a commercial prison to me seems...something out of a really bad science fiction movie....
Your solution is to use force for everything. My solution.. teach people about the benefits of getting vaccinated. It's pretty simple, why has this escaped so many people?
Because deep down, a lot of people are stupid, ignorant and greedy animals that'll use any excuse they can find to further their own selfish needs and desires.
Case in point, when a good part of the windows in downtown Enschede were blown out by the explosion, it took less than 5 minutes for folks to start looting from the shops that had become accessible. A good chunk of a city blows up, people are hurt/dying, and their first priority is their own selfish, not to mention illegal, interests.
These are the people that can only remain part of society through force. The moment they are given any sort of leeway whatsoever they'll do whatever the fuck they damn well please without any thought of the consequences for themselves in the longer run or for anyone else in any run at all.
Looking at myself and my own childhood I can see traits in my own personality and thought processes that correlate with the way autistic people describe themselves, although in my case it was probably more to a degree that I wouldn't be diagnosed, I was just "different".
Hah, I love all the different autism symptoms. Half the stuff associated with e.g. Asperger could also be filed under respectively "insensitive jerk", "jackass" or simply "a guy".
Grey areas all over the place, so I can only sympathize how hard it must be to know where to draw the line.
I said something similar [slashdot.org] regarding the Russian decision to use Linux. It wasn't received too well. I think that this sort of event truly does mean trouble for MS and proprietary software in a rather large way.
Nah, it's a conspiracy by Microsoft. By associating Linux with (former) communists at least they make sure never to lose their marketshare in the USA.
Don't forget that the EVE universe is the ultimate paradise when it comes to "might makes right". My entire corp is based on making fellow players face the consequences of what they say and do. Friends get help, advice and defence, and those who choose to act like asses...well, let's just say explosions are often involved.
4. Player versus player. The one area of the game which really is interesting is almost totally off bounds to new players, who don't have the trained skills to be able to compete. There is also an increasing tendency in Eve for players to congregate in huge gangs, called "blobs" which makes casual play for a solo player extremely difficult, and this trend is only increasing.
As the CEO of a 6 man corp that regularly finds itself at war with other corps/alliances that range in membercount from anywhere between 10 and 200, I can't even begin to express just how incredibly wrong this statement is, except to say that you probably didn't even try and are just parroting what other people told you.
As for being a solo player...it's an MMORPG. There's no point in just sitting around on your own running missions or mining, you might as well just play X-Beyond in that case.
And yes, I've got plenty of room left for a couple of new players flying rifters with a tech1 warp disruptor fitted, thank you. And that's a ship you can get into...pretty much the moment you start playing.
I can't get over the feeling that CCP are a bunch of technically gifted con artists, given to the same PR misleading statements and untruths that other companies are. I think the main reason they stay in business is because they appeal to the geekiest of gamer who appreciate the game's complexity and are willing to turn a blind eye towards all the inconsistencies in it.
They've definitely gone more corporate the past year and have been more careful about what kind of statements they put out. Then again, every time a dev so much as takes a breath there's 15 pages of people on the forums screaming bloody murder. On the other hand, after watching the epic matches in the alliance tournament this past weekend, I can't help but feel that there's a lot of people at CCP who put their heart and soul into this game.
EvE has a certain elitist air about it. Losing hurts, as you said. It takes days, if not weeks, to recover from a decisive defeat. Running EvE corporations isn't just running a clan, where you slap together a homepage and organize a raid or two per week. Planning in EvE means that you have your next few weeks pretty much laid down instead of considering that you may have time for some raid in a few days.
That's the biggest load of bull. Yes, you can play that way, but there's tons of players that just log in for a few hours to have a bit of fun before going off to the in-laws.
And yes, I am CEO of a corporation and executor of an alliance.
What do you think the average EVE player should be doing about the global situation?
Actually, from my experience, EVE has a disproportionately high amount of players that serve in either the military or in law enforcement. Nothing quite like being in a fleet FC'd by a rl drill-sergeant;-)
... By the time the Viagra is working you'll be watching superbowl again... what a turnoff..
A major part of the male US population sitting there watching a bunch of guys in tight pants...while sporting a massive boner. That's not a turnoff, that's comedy gold...as well as a goldmine for the shrink community:P
(By the way: Does your shoe-shining position come with a company car?;^)
As a matter of fact it does. It even scales based on experience and loyalty to your employer. You start off at a 24:1 scale car, then move up to 18:1, and so on.
The process you are seeking is making parents accountable and making sure their children actually go to school.
How about, while we're at it, we stop telling the little brats and their brats about how special they all are and instead start sending the message that it takes hard work and dedication to amount to anything in this world?
No ma'am, your little Jimmy really only has himself to blame for that F. So unless you think a future where he spends his time shining my shoes is a good idea, how about you ground his disobedient little ass for a week till he starts doing his homework?
They are not motivated by a desire to support the 'formula' and to suggest they are is laughable.
Thank you! Never again will I have to buy anything from Stardock because I support their formula! From now on I'll treat their products just the same as all the crap EA spews forth which isn't worth paying for unless you know for sure it actually bloody works.
I buy the official product when it is *convenient*, because like a lot of people I am a lazy bastard. If you make it easy for me to purchase, install and use your product from the comfort of my chair, then I will do so. If you put a gazillion hurdles in my path, then I will simply go to the pirate bay and get it there. Wrong/unethical/illegal/despicable? Perhaps. Reality? Very much so.
We won't be able to do anything once he's in. He'll screw everything up, and won't leave when we ask him to. We'll need to find a special force of people to go in and remove him manually.
Actually he might be a blessing in disguise. After 4 years of this guy, the only hope for the USA will be repartitioning the country and then a swift reinstall of the operating system. Looks like the hardcore liberalists will get their wishes after all;-)

You say you are a lawyer but your username is TenDollarMan? Something doesn't make sense here.
It doesn't say anywhere how much time those 10 bucks get you, does it? For all you know that's his billable rate per minute ;-)

Why would people originally less inclined to join the military, be more inclined to do so after exposure to such games?
Hmm, there's a term for that...what was it again? Oh yeah, Public Relations.
Same reason they're letting Bellisario(JAG, NCIS) muck around on their bases and boats...because it paints a pretty picture of the navy.
... By the time the Viagra is working you'll be watching superbowl again ... what a turnoff..

We handled this sort of thing already with Maritime laws. In this case, the ocean is a lot like the Internet, I think.
Hmmm, in that case I wonder which navies will get deployed to protect everyone from pirates?
So if you want to see scantily-clad women being sexually suggestive with vegetables and can't
Some of us are at work and can't afford to start thinking about subject matter like that, you insensitive clod!

Stupid. Ogg.
Nooooo...Nanny Ogg.
