The concept state Heinlein presented in Starship Troopers where everyone is considered equal *but* the right to vote has to be earned by dedicating a certain amount of time and effort the "the common good" always appealed to me. Then again, such a system would still be highly vulnerable to corruption, not to mention the various ways "the common good" could be redefined by the wrong people. Still, the idea of restricting voting privileges to people that have shown themselves capable of actually giving a damn does make sense in a way.

Face it, human genetics strongly resemble software that's already had a few update and patching cycles, in that there's still huge chunks of legacy code floating around, some of which hasn't been quite entirely commented out yet.

Most people don't need the speed that they have in their PC, but it was a selling point. It's like the Suzuki Hayabusa. It will do 186mph. How many people need to go that fast? Okay, now how many people bought the bike because it can go that fast? I bet the second number is much higher than the first.

There is one minor flaw to your analogy here, which is that the engine of said bike is single-threaded, single-process. It does only one thing, which is to go forward. Whereas even Joe Sixpack will be reading his email, doing some form of IM, listening to a bit of music and burning a DVD at the same time, all the while having to share CPU time with the antivirus and the firewall. Joe doesn't *need* that speed, but it does make the computing experience more enjoyable.

BUT, I work in a small IT department- and we spend about 1/2 of our weekly meeting talking about how 'stupid' these users are.

My personal guideline is as follows: any IT specialist, whatever his or her expertise may be, that cannot differentiate between "being stupid" and "not knowing much about computers" needs to be kept as far away from actual users as possible.

I don't know why, but for some reason IT workers consider themselves as really special, as opposed to what they really are, the people that provide the tools for others to do their work with. Yes, a blacksmith that makes good hammers so a carpenter can build houses might be a skilled craftsman, but so is said carpenter. Someone who writes and maintains an applicatian to control finances isn't any more special than the accountant who uses it to actually control said finances.

Suppressing them with meds only delays the inevitable.
