logic and human nature pretty much dictate that we'll move on to wind/water/nuclear more and more as fossil fuels run out. as prices go up the alternatives will become more viable options, at which point they will simply be implemented. there'll be a lot of resistance, but at some point we'll simply run out, and then there is no alternative but to turn towards the alternatives.

the power company i work for already provides the 20% you mentioned, a biogas installation about to be constructed will effectively bring that up to a 100%. That'll mean an entire province(albeit a small one in a small country) will be able to receive power from green sources. another power company here in holland is about to commence a huge windpark as well, on top of all the windmills we currently have already(which we dance around in clogs waving tulips, as we're well known to do). solar isn't too much of an option for us, since sun isn't exactly plentiful up here, wind on the other hand...now all we need is a way to turn rain into power and we'll rule the world once again :-)

making green electricity isn't that much of a problem. regular households can be provided for in a number of ways, the downside being that there's practically no profit to be made from it. the big powerhungry companies will have to be dealt with in a nuclear fashion for the time being, unfortunately.

So, ehmm, this is all the fault of the employees themselves? Not the rotten company they work for and which you have chosen to keep in business by granting them your patronage, or their moronic manager who did a quick afternoon study, but the poor sod on the phone? Clearly you've never experienced what it's like.

Oh, and just for the record, there's more to the job than "it's a high-stress low-pay job that _only_ has something to do with being desperate enough to accept it". It's a way in for someone who has trained himself in certain skills, be they related to computing or not, and it allows one to display those skills in a corporate environment. You know what the problem with phone-support people is? All the good ones will have moved on to better jobs within the same company within 18 months.

However, the guy in me that pays all the taxes I pay gets pissed when untold billions every year go from taxpayer wallets into hideously expensive care for people with lung cancer they got while smoking.

Simple solution to that: do as the Dutch do. Tax the hell out of it. The amount of money brought in from taxes on tobacco in the Netherlands is more than the total annual budget for health care. There's 1 downside though, if everyone stopped smoking at the same time the economy would collapse, but how likely is that to happn?

    - using a 25 euro router.
    - using mozilla for browsing and mail.
    - not opening funky attachments(never actually got one tbh).

I fail to see the problem...so unless you're just another mac fanboy perhaps you're doing something wrong on your laptop. Ever consider turning the AV off and a respectable firewall on, and just run virusscans on a weekly basis?

Ah, the chicken and the egg. So terrorist tactics work? Or does the US government consider it simply to be the next practical "enemy" the American public can be rallied against? Face it, the best way of diverting attention from what's rotten within is by pointing a finger elsewhere and screaming really loud. Whether it's the commies, the Jews, the Arabs, it doesn't really matter. All one needs is a good example of a single rotten egg and from that day forward simply blame all that is wrong on the basket. Heck, even the rotten egg is a luxury. It's what happens when people act like sheep.

The whole idea behind putting "tech" books for free online is that most people still like the feel of a real book, something to pick up and quickly browse through, you can underline interesting lines etc.

Kinda like how people still like to have their favorite music on some sort of physical medium which they can put on a shelf? As for the comparison between unfinished books and songs, think chapter/book and single/album...just imagine a band being able to promote an album by releasing 2 of the songs into the wild wild web and let word-of-mouth deal with the publicity. Just might work.

Programming OTOH is tightly restrained by what our programming languages actually allow us to do.

Which can really be said about a lot of art forms. A painter is restricted by the brushes, the canvas and the paint used. A sculptor is restricted by the chisels, the material being sculpted, and so on, and so on. There are always *some* restraints one works within. In order for one to be able to work without those restraints one would need to be able to create matter out of nothing and I believe that privilege is reserved to $deity.

Note to those who are going to say this doesn't apply to the written word, poetry and proza are just as restricted by the languages they're written in as programming is.
