This might be a brilliant classical reference, except that since both Hektor and Astyanax died at the end of the Trojan wars...
But for those that were unaware- it is a brilliant, er... that is, at least marginally luminant, Monty Python reference. Right now, write it a hundred times!
In addition to using an IR dongle to fire commands off to your cable box (which has already been mentioned above), you can also use a serial cable to control certain units (more details here).
...and immediately wiped the hard drive in favor of a real operating system...
Even if you don't consider a Microsoft OS a real operating system; I certainly consider it good enough to gather a bit of hardware information before I wipe a drive and try an install on unfamiliar hardware.
That could've been eight extra hours bitching on Slashdot:)
Filed in small claims court, the cost here in Seattle is $21. Plus of course, the few hours it costs you to stand in line to get forms, and court time. That still leaves enough for my next motherboard upgrade:)
It is unknown whether there was a technical problem at the hosting site or whether the site was merely bombarded with requests from IT managers clamoring for copies of the free papers on the site
Uhm... Wouldn't they be able to count the submitted records of the site?
MS PR Guy #1: They want a statement to explain why the site went down!
MS PR Guy #2: I got it! Our product can't handle a load; on top of that, it was so bad, we don't even know if we actually got any data from the form!
As long as you can handle the server room being a bit more smelly. (Of course that doesn't apply if your tech force eats the fried food from the Chevron accross the street like ours did everyday)
Working for a small local internet company last year, my boss wanted to have some fun with a few of the customers.
I wrote a small redirect script in Perl, that redirected web visitors to a random language at Altavista's Babelfish. Unfortunately, being in tech support, I created work for myself with e-mails like: Help!! I logged on to the internet this morning, and everything is in spanish! I can't get it to stop! HELP!
I remember the day that I mistakenly left some aluminium foil in the microwave to heat up some dinner. So the sparks and all the screaming provide the distraction for me to escape, right?
And don't forget that we can have portable grape races now.
...every single PC has to be addressable to internet.
Not necessarily- In a corporate situation (or home LAN, etc...) they could also be acessible to an intranet.
If you don't like these set tops, why not build your own? Get a 2u rackmount case, an LCD panel, some Infra-red conrol, a set-top motherboard or some other ATX, hard drive, an All-in wonder Radeon, some RAM, a chip, and if you're feeling really rich, maybe even a custom keypad with a serial interface for the front. I got so far as draw up some sketches and figure a price for something like this, and decided that since I'm poor, I'd rather buy a new 'real' box at the price (~$1400 for something nice).
Plus I'm lazy. The All-in wonder would really only be usefull to Windows boxen (especially with all the cool software.)
1. When the reoptimization is completed, expect a factor of two improvement
Expectations are still estimates. The modified MPEG4 FlasK encoder numbers are certainly more accurate- and they aren't exactly promising.
2. that larger caches are inherently slower
While a larger cache isn't always good, it only has to be usually better to get more performance.
3. Slow rotates and shifts.
He wasn't arguing that Intel's shift/rotate unit was sub-par, but that using it in a solution for a partial register stall was a step back. Of course he uses the magic words certain and can, but this looks why he talks about slow shift/rotate as a problem.
I agree that the PIV overall is well designed for future expansion- scalability, and the L3 cache, but these things aren't here yet. By the time we have compilers optimizing for the PIV, and the option of ordering our PIV + L3 both AMD and Intel will be pushing the next level of chips.
Plus...
If this would really hurt the sales of an author's book that much, why would Amazon offer them for sale? They are, after all, making a profit on those new books as well. Any used book sale on their site will also be a no-sale of a new book in it's place.
Amazon is using the used book sales to target shoppers who would spend 30 minutes on the net to save three dollars, betting that most people will pay full price for a new book rather than risk getting a more mistreated copy than they would prefer; leaving the used book sales to generate cash from people who wouldn't normally buy.

I tend to find the 86' Lexmark ink has a fruity taste which can be complimeted only by a good mature cheese and a decent toner cartrige.
Hmmm- could anyone recommend a delicate Champagne to accent my vintage Canon bubbly-jet?
Oh, dear. Those poor From Justin to Kelley movie-goers!

Was there violent behaviour before videogames? Yes?
But there was funny before the Simpsons- Does that make the Simpsons not the cause of funny?
I call it a "laser"....
<Dr. Evil voice>
Why don't you and the "Laser" get a freakin' room?

Saturday night Halo parties have left me thinking 'Clear sniper shot!' when someone is far off and their head is in view...
A long bout playing as Sam Fischer has also convinced me that I need to be as quiet as possible when by myself at night.

Ah!
But, the only limit is yourself!
For, anything is possible... at Zombocom!
Actually, according to the 3D display on their website, the keypad is supposed to snap off.
I have forgotten to lock my phone, but I've also forgotten to shut off my Palm when looking up phone numbers:

Mine sounded ten times better after I cracked the hard drive open, and drew a ring around the outside of the platter with my green magic marker.

Friggin' thubmnailed articles, I hate reading those things ;)
