It is a little tricky. There are definitely harder things to do right (as opposed to say, Sendmail, which is probably being the canonical example of Hard To Configure Correctly), but it could be a lot easier.
Yeah, I know there are tools out there, like the Ximian Setup Tools, and SWAT, but I don't think they cut it all the way. I like getting a listing of all my shares in one place, ala XST and SWAT, but just to add shares needs to be as simple as Windows makes it. I should be able to add shared folders to the network just by right-clicking the folder's icon in Nautilus (or in Konq, if that's your flavor). I know I've seen this brought up for Nautilus in the past, so after GNOME 2 ships, hopefully this will get added. Any KDE users know if Konq has plans to do this?
<flamebait> Nautilus 2 has beaten it's big gripe - it's finally quite speedy - when's Konq gonna simplify that button encrusted, "mystery-meat"-toolbar-icon-laden interface, eh?;) </flamebait>
This is a bit of a troll, albeit possibly unintentional.
He gave a 20 minutes spill about how the books should not be read or even given away because the content was copyrighted.
I'm pretty damn sure that isn't giving us the whole picture. RMS is stubborn as hell, but he's not that silly. If you had told me that he didn't want them distributed because they books were titled "Linux for Dummies" instead of "GNU/Linux for Dummies", I MIGHT have believed you. Even then, I really doubt he would have blocked the distribution of books that are already printed, and thus, can't be changed to use the "proper" moniker of GNU/Linux.
except their 'proprietary' compiler is the only one that's not broken.
With RH 8, (the next major release, no doubt) they'll surely use gcc 3.x and be in line with the rest of the world.
Hopefully it'll include Apache 2, Gnome 2, OpenOffice 1.x, and Mozilla 1.x! That'd be a lot of milestones in one release... It'll be an interesting Fall/Winter when 8.0 ships.
Perhaps after Spidey, Harry Potter, and LotR, Hollywood will finally get a fscking clue that a big budget requires a good PLOT and good ACTING to back it up, but that when you can manage all of those, everyone wins...
That, and it sure can't hurt the odds of better comic book based movies being made in the future.:)
Those who favor a BSD style license are, in general, freeloaders whose avarice eclipses even that of the worst of Napster abusers. At least Napster users were only 'stealing' the PRODUCT. BSD supporters believe that it's OK to steal all of the effort behind the PRODUCT as well. (I pray that makes sense:)
hrm.... i'm not sure this is a very clear picture... those who *DEVELOP* under the BSD license are certainly no freeloaders! As for those who advocate a BSD like license, but don't develop... well, I can't speak for all of them - the corporations who do this are certainly more suspect, but that doesn't automatically make them "guilty" of freeloading.
Almost every OSS license has it's place, IMHO. I prefer L/GPL style, but there are many places where a BSD style license is definately a must-have.
Thanks... that's the whole idea anyhow - freedom. I very much encourage the use of the GPL, but it's surely not the One True License(TM), and it's not the devil people make it out to be, either. Anyone who doesn't like the GPL should make equal complaints against all closed-source licenses as well, since they're even MORE restrictive on redistribution.
Now how am I supposed to tell my boss that Linux/Evolution/Open Office, will free us from the licensing costs and license tracking overhead of closed proprietary software? The OS academic open license for Windows XP costs $40.00/seat and the Office suite costs $60.00/seat...for a total of $100.00 per seat.
The exchange connector for Evolution costs $69.00! This doesn't give me an entire office suite....just an Exchange connector! And I still have the license tracking overhead of closed proprietary software.
I understand where you're coming from, but you're missing a couple points.
1) If you talk to Ximian, I'm guessing they may have an "academic discount" for Connector - and I KNOW they have a discount if you buy licenses in bulk.
2) You ARE getting a full office suite. Go grab OpenOffice.org 1.0:)
the box will contain media for Windows, Linux, and MacOS
And it's for this reason exactly that I'll be picking up THIS game before a lot of others. Linux support IN THE BOX. Major kudos to bioware for this!
This makes me wonder... did they use SDL by any chance? (Not being a programmer, I realize that might be a horribly silly question, but I thought it was worth asking)
Actually, I can just about guarantee it. RH said back in March that they'd release a LSB 1.1 compliant distro in 2002, and seeing as how 7.3 can't be it, it'll have to be 8.0 in the Fall/Winter later in this year.
UpEvil.net reporters have just discovered a completely foolproof method for getting around adware and spyware in file/music sharing programs! Even better than the method described in this/. story, the UpEvil crew has unearthed the following three AMAZING new ways of fighting ALL current (ad || spy)ware!
Step 1: Uninstall all current file sharing progams on your PC
Step 2: When finished, simply start accquiring your music/movies through ethical and legal methods, like Emusic.com, or through an secret, ancient technique from the Far East called "Bu Yingt Hecd" (note from UpEvil medical staff: if you experience discomfort at the thought of supporting the corporate system through the given methods, we have found the best way to alleviate this pain is to cease the purchase/accquiring of corporate-produced music altogether)
Uh... really? Paul Allen was always the "genius" coder. (disclosure: the company I work for is owned by PA) Everything I've ever heard about Gates' actual *code* was that he was only mediocre. That's not to say he was BAD at it, just only ok. On the other hand, he *is* a genious capitalist, or rather, he's really good at exploiting American style capitalism through admittedly brilliant but wholly fucking evil marketing tactics, and making a gazillion bucks in the process.
his accomplishments back in the day far supercede anything ANYONE who posts to this site have accomplished.
no. Once again, almost all the hardcore coding shit from MS was Paul Allen. And as for Bill being a better coder than *any* Slashdot poster? I'm prettysurethat's bullshit.
I second this - *very* smart plum, and only "denies" the rest of the non-payers a mere 15 minutes of wait, so it strikes a great balance between keeping/. unified, but also "adding value" for the subscribers.
/me goes off to gag himself after actually using the phrase "adding value" (and not in a mocking sense)
I'm still amazed at the "outrage" over this stuff. I mean, people download this software for *free*, so you can use it to TAKE songs/movies/etc without paying for them, against the wills of the creators!
Kazaa users, cry me a fucking river about your privacy... this whole thing reminds me of the guy who sucessfully sued the people whose house he broke into because he broke his leg falling down the stairs because of some crap he tripped on... The people he sued were ruled "negligent" because they left stuff on the stairs. Please.

This will DESTROY their IT infrastructure! Their economy will collapse! THE SKY IS FALLING!!!!
Or... maybe businesses and gov't down there can stop spending tons of $$$ on software, and spend it on improving their products/services instead...
On second thought, nah... that could never work!
Were it that all companies were like this! It's a lot easier to evangelize good HTML and Free software than fair labor. :)
Which clearly makes *us* doing it ok!
Uh... a handful? First, it looks like we're SURPASSING the terrorists in total # of murders!
From this article:
More info (though a little older) can be found here.
What about the thousands of murders on the part of capitalist nations overseas?
Afghani civilians meeting US bombs, anyone?
Or how about the children being killed by cancer that they pick up from this shit that capitalist organisations dump in the air and water?
Capitalism kills too, just more subtly.
How exactly is it that socialism == murders?

That's a shame... oh, well. It's certainly a step in the right direction. Perhaps the toolset will come out for Linux at some point as well.

This has been your daily UpEvil "Kazaa-whores-are-a-bunch-of-cheap-whiny-fucks" post of the day. Thank you, and good night.

I see your point here, except that Microsoft probably wouldn't be paying for squat.

see the subject....
well said.
Naw, my bad, man. I should've been more awake before daring to hit the "submit" button. bah...
grr. Sorry, I'm fscking retarded this morning.
I meant this site. Sorry!
