    sexual harassment is pretty serious

The last time I worked for a big corporation, we were given a guide to avoiding sexual harassment. Already, this should suggest to you that "sexual harassment" covers more than you think it does -- after all, we were given a guide to avoiding it, not just told to show respect to our coworkers. The guide indicated that pinning up a swimsuit calendar in your cubicle is considered sexual harassment. So is look at sexy (not necessarily nude or pornographic) pictures on your computer, since a female coworker might see the display and get offended. Sorry, but ever since then, I have been suspicious of "sexual harassment" claims, particularly when details are scant and the claims come out of a corporation. If one her first day at HP, her first encounter with Mr. Hurd was him grabbing her butt in the copy room and asking her to get naked, then fine, it is sexual harassment. Without details indicating that, though, I would not jump to conclusions.

The magical "cloud" doesn't stack up well for security compared to a physical safe. Flash is promising, but still not there in terms of reliablity.

When they come up with a compact, reliable, portable storage medium I'll be the first one to toss tapes out the window. The idea of running backups to some credit-card sized SD cards is appealing.

the saying in my IT world is.... "If it's not broken, break something that is easy to fix so at least you can look busy". The biggest problem with management vs IT is that when your IT guy is doing his job, less stuff tends to break. This leads to management thinking that the IT guy isn't doing anything and can be eliminated. My philosophy is to "break" something on a regular basis so that you can at least look busy when people walk around your desk or cube. Staring at log files typically just looks like you are browsing the web to people who don't know any better.

way to spread the FUD. you are basing your main argument on the exception, not the rule. most shoplifters get charged with a misdemeanor....not felony burglary. the loss prevention worker has input on the charges because they are the ones that call the police and tell them what charges to file. at one point, i stopped an employee that was stealing over $1000 of stuff.... the loss prevention manager didn't want to mess with felony charges, so he told the cops she had stolen under $500.
