  2. What do you school? on Joel Gives College Advice For Programmers · · Score: 1

School is a place to learn. But also a place to make life long friends, form a social netowrk that can be used later to refer potential employees or be referred to become a potential employee. Also it is a place where our culture spends a good amount of time in.

It is a time where people discover themselves and a time where those who have already discovered themselves become something more because of their acadmeic pursuits or other pursuits.

Yes, all in all most of us as individuals do not need this system to learn something. But we do need to meet people, socialize, and talk amongst people who do have similar interests. And a place where that can happen is college.

Yes, it can be a horrible experience. But you must do what is necessary to make it the benefit you. Because if you do not, then you will be wasting a lot of time, money and your future.

Yes, school is not right for some people. Some people are better in reality right away and dealing with practicality and the complexity of real life happening before even going to school. School was not neccessarily made to prepare people for the real world, but it is a good buffer, and if you can make it through a hard school, it is like climbing a huge mountain, you have accomplished alot. If you goto an easy school with no challenge, please consider something that can challenge you more in life.

  5. God Help Us All on Kerry Concedes Election To Bush · · Score: 1

I see an oncoming threat of growing terror because our country approved the Bush administration for a 2nd time.

I think the probability of a terrorist attack has risen now, especially after Osama's latest video. Obviously Bush being president a 2nd time makes other countries mad.

Our world can not take much more terror and war before it breaks out into an apocalpyse. A 2nd attack on the united states will ensure the draft being brought back. With the country more divided than ever, a civil war will bring friends and families against each other all because there is extreme hatred towards the other in terms of political ideology.

To those whose religion caused them to choose Bush, they should think twice about the teachings of their religions and compare them to what Bush has done.

To those whose business caused them to choose Bush, they should think twice about the money they take in and ask if it is truly more important than doing what is right.

To those whose friends and families caused them to choose Bush, they should think twice about the sole purpose of casting a vote that matters from a single individual. Beware the stupidity of people in large groups.

To those whose would raise a sword against the people who attacked us. We shall die by the sword if we fight by the sword. Evil begets evil, and we can not keep the cycle of evil alive by treating our enemies with violence and destruction.

I pray for all of us in the United States of America, our day of judgement will come and all of us will have to answer each and every hard question in front of the big man upstairs when the time comes. At least I know I will have peace. The big question is, will you?

  9. CS = Lots of Math on Math And The Computer Science Major · · Score: 1

If you pick up the Art of Programming series of books by Nuth, you will see that it is ALL math!

Math is essential to CS. Even higher level math
that is used in CS Theory classes that are all
theorems, lemmas, corollaries and their proofs.

People who walk through a CS degree without taking a CS Theory class do not really have an understanding and appreciation for Computational Science which is what Computer Science truly is.

Programming can be done by anyone. Sorry I don't
care how good of a coder you are, your job is going to be outsourced. Unless you learn how to
advance or create new ways of computation at the base level then you are in trouble.

  10. Re:I don't know a good rate... on Reasonable Salary for Entry Level Programmers? · · Score: 1

We have way too many CS graduates out there and more coming through the pipe in schools now. If anyone out there is reading this and is still in high school, I would think very very seriously about other options besides pursuing CS or anything relating to IT. You may love it and it may be a great hobby and you may be academically great in it-

BUT salaries are going down. To the point where people in IT who are too expensive will be eventually laid off. And also to the point where new hires in IT will be doing more work for less money.

You may argue that you should ideally do something that you love to do. BUT when reality sets in of building a family and retirement money you will need to seriously question yourself and your long-term plans.

It seems like the U.S. is continously trying to shift its citizens away from detail oriented low level technical jobs toward higher level business area jobs. I do believe this will have a tremendous downfall in the future, but for now what are you gonna do?

  13. Outsourcing - CEO's and the Board of Executives on The Full Outsourcing Discussion · · Score: 2, Insightful

Don't forget corporate CEO's and the appointed board
don't work for the people, but rather for the investors of the company.

Given this, it is obviously inevitable that offshore outsourcing will replace
many many jobs. Why? Basically it comes down to: Does the CEO and board
care about providing jobs to U.S. citizens or care about providing money to its investors?

Obviously CEO's and the board care about providing money back to the investors
by whatever means possible. "Whatever means possible" has been given alot of
meaning from insider trading scandals and cooking the books. "Whatever means possible"
also means if we can outsource the it, then so be it.

Workers will gripe because they finally wake up and realize that the company -does not care-
about the workers. Of course it is politcally incorrect to make the mistake of saying that if you
are a CEO or a member of the board.

As people are faced with these kinds of decisions in their lives, they will ultimately have to
answer for their basis, execution and consequences of their decisions.
