According to the link above that goes to PCWorld. They last almost as long. They last more than double of the Alkalines and cost the same amount ($4 for four).
Congratulations for your achievements and hard work. What are your plans for future? Are you elligble for in-state tuition or scholarships / grants? Do you already have offers to go out of state to bigger name schools ( MIT , etc )?
Are you part of Academic Decathlon? You seem to be very gifted and could get a lot of recognition / scholarship offers if you did well. I went to Trevor Browne in the late 90's and Carl Hayden had a strong Aca. Dec. team and a great coach. I remember the teacher well, I can't remember his name but he was a middle-aged looking man with gray hair.
I hope you keep your goals high and continue to break through the barriers that are constantly being thrown at you.
Your team should really put up a site where you can accept donations (paypal or something like that), so the tech community can support great projects like the ones you're working on.
Email me alex.petrescu@gmail.com when you do or if you guys need help with anything IT related (programming questions, website, databases, etc).
As another poster has mentioned, Carl Hayden used to be a magnet program (I believe they were disbanded 5-7 years ago). All of the technology, programming, networking classes were taught at Carl Hayden. I would've loved to go there but Carl Hayden is probably one of the ghettoest around (and I went to a pretty ghetto one myself... you know with race riots and gang warfare on school grounds).
This is a great article because it shows that if you pour money into education, no matter what the background of the students, they will excell. Ofcourse when I graduated highschool in the Phoenix Union HS District (same as Carl Hayden), the statistics were against any HS graduates actually graduating from college. (As far as I understood it, out of the 5-10% that went to college, only 1 in 10 would graduate... this was from a long time teacher in the PUHSD) Sure we got scholarships, but very very few of us were prepared for the amount of reading, writing, and studying required for college. There were plenty of people like me that were competent in our respective fields, but could not handle the rest of the classes (the humanities for me).
As the article mentioned, most of the graduates of this school go on to become day laborers or work in a warehouse, and even if they do go to college, their chances of getting a degree are slim to none. I hope the federal and state governments take a tougher stance on school funding and realisticly look at what is needed to make sure every student has the opportunity to succeede.
Almost all of the PUHSD schools focus on getting the bottom more towards the middle then the middle up towards the top. Which leaves us with a weak middle, which in turn creates a less educated middle class./rant
I called to move my service, and the rep told me about a promotion they had where I could get HBO + Showtime + Digital Cable for only $29.99 a month for a whole year. I was paying more than $70 before! Call them up, and see if they have the same deal in your area (it was the Gold Plan or something like that). This is a great deal especially with the On Demand system they have where you can watch all the back shows that air on Showtime or HBO for free, aswell as all the movies that show on those channels for free.
The On Demand service is fantastic. Combine that with TiVO pause live tv, and "Season Pass", and I don't think I could ask much more from a cable provider.
Actually they restarted the program again (I just started using it again yesterday). They are still using Giganews, and there is still a 2GB monthly limit. 2GB is more than enough for any reading of Usenet, and it's also enough for small downloads (random MP3's and files).
Senders pay for physical junk mail. There is a limiting factor to how much they can send. I can ignore physical junk mail.
I never said to stop producing it... but why is he bitching? The better question is why is he bitching to a crowd of "spam-haters" about his spam-friendly software being pirated.
Also, can we please stop using the P2P arguement on why all software should be legal? File sharing is like speeding... sure its illegal but the vast majority does not believe it hurts anyone. P2P software is only illegal in the US and all of the countries under the influence of the US. The US and US corporations force its copyright rules onto everyone that it has a treaty with or other agreement.
Software should not be illegal. I never said to get rid of this guys software.
Yeah, but how can you defend a guy that got burned by the same type of people that he caters his software for? He knew what he was getting himself into.
I said the software had legitimate uses, but I also said I don't feel bad because thats not what he gets most his money from. I don't this the P2P apps actually cause damage to the infrastructure of the web like spam does. P2P apps may have perceived damages to a few large corporations, but they do not affect every single used of the internet like spam.
This is like feeling sorry for a hitman because another hitman is charging a lower price and taking credit for the other hitman's kills.
Like I said, I don't feel bad for a guy that makes business by dealing with spammers. Your comment really doesn't make sense. I wasn't saying he was wrong for making the software, I said I don't feel bad for him when he got burned by the type of people he gets his money from.
If you're gunna deal with scammers, you're going to get scammed. There's no honor among thieves.
Yeah, this will be used by small mom-n-pop spammers... the ones that send 100k emails from their Cox/Comcast business connections. This kind of software is not used by serious spammers, but it's still spam, and it's still wrong, and I still have the fact that I have to dedicate and my ISP has to dedicate so many resources to try to reduce the problem.
Thats sort of what I was saying... it's hard to feel sorry for a guy that tailors to this kind of market. I'm sure this MailingList King software could be used for real legit mailing lists, but the fact that it was listed on a site that sold spam lists and other spam software and has some spam features, leads me to believe this is mainly intended for small time spammers.
I've been asked to do some contracting for a ticket broker that used one of these programs along with a program to find email addresses from different searches on google. There are literarly hundreds of pieces of software that do this exact thing with exactly one thing in mind... spamming.
Doesn't anyone get the feeling that MaillistKing is used by spammers? Thats why it was on a site advertising other spam software and email lists with 1mil names... and thats why the guy was hosting in Pakistan and probably knew the spam business well. Probably why he had such blatant disregard for the law and any acted like a prick?
I don't know if I want to feel sorry for a guy that sells and develops spam software. I guess there are legitimate uses for Mailing Lists, but just because there are a few people using it legitimitely (sp?)... doesn't mean it's not used to increase spam.
Other than that, this is nothing new. Have a problem, contact the ISP... wow... what a revelation.
Wow, looking at some of those examples, I was amazed by the fact that I couldn't READ most of the words. It looks completely foreing to me, might as well be trying to read Japanese.
No. No. Completely the opposite. Google created a business model that was unfeasible for the internet in its current state.
Not blaming the internet, I'm blaming Google. They should've seen this comming. I talked to their engineer like 2 years ago and alerted them of a situation like this.
I think I've posted this story like 5 times now on Slashdot, usually every time a story like this comes around. I guess I'll tell it one more time.
I made a program to make fraudulent clicks for a customer who was being attacked by a fradulent company. The company created a similiar looking domain name and just ripped his entire site and put it on there.
He was going through lawyers to stop this guy but it was taking a long time. He saw that the guy was advertising on google (right above him). So I created a program that got a list of anonymous proxies from a site, then it would randomly choose a proxy, then pick a random interval, and a random referrer (from a list), and a random browser tag. Anyway, using this program we could click on his ad-word hundreds of times a day, costing him money and making the "bad-guy" max his limit for the day.
I was actually pretty shocked that it worked, so I gave my client his money back and emailed google about it. I talked with a few people at google including a higher level technical guy. I described my method and he thanked me, and I've never heard from him again.
Moral of the story... none really, but I don't think these fraudulent clicks can be stopped. This is another case of a company who's business model is pretty much destroyed because of the anonymity of the internet.
I have actually fixed a problem with a cousin's laptop by taking it apart, and just unplugging and plugging every board / wire I could find. End result is a perfectly working laptop. The problem re-occured and I actually found a daughter-board that was comming loose. I super-glued it down and it never had another problem.
Just take your laptop apart and try pressing down on any board that seems to plug into another one.
Wow... thats sucks... what site did you download from? I'm a frequent downloaded of Dead Like Me too because i can get them in HD as opposed to my crappy TV.
This guy is an idiot. He is going to regret his involvement in this business in a couple of years, when he will try to get a real job and his name and association is all over the 'net.
I'm sure he is not the first or the last to be approached by a shitty businessman with promises of riches for some software that does something shady.
Being a contractor in a city that is full of small businesses, I have been approached by five business owners so far and asked to write crap software like this guy. Most of the owners want spamming software. As a part of the IT community, I have turned down all of them, even though I did not have a job and had a wife and siblings living with me.
The moral of the story, is don't shit where you eat. Do not write software to abuse the IT community with spam/hacks/scams and expect to be treated with respect when you're older and trying to make a career at a decent company.
As a side note, I understand why he's doing the things he's doing. The work is very challenging and always on the cutting edge, and the short term money is great. I just hope he realizes that what he's doing is immoral. Morality is fickle, but attacking individuals will always be immoral. If he were writing a P2P (which is also immoral from the point of view of the RIAA), we'd all be singing his praises.
I believe there are math patents. Like the formula / equation to make those big picture made out of little pictures. Thats patented and has to be "licensed".
I might be wrong, but thats what I read on this puzzle box for a Simpsons puzzle. Some guy from MIT had patented the formula.
Microsoft is adding these features to Windows XP and Windows 2003 server in order to give developers a reason to use these technologies. So they can use Avalon and Indigo in their applications and still have people on older OS's be able to use their applications. Much like how.NET was backported to Windows 98. Developers wouldn't develop applications in.NET if they knew that only a small percentage of Windows users would be able to use it.
It's a win-win IMHO, Windows developers get to use new features and develop application using more intuitive and powerful tools and Microsoft gets a larger application base for Longhorn.
Technically the kick he did was illegal. It was a dolphin type kick that's not allowed in the breast stroke event. Only the "breast-stroke-type" kick (sort of like a frog kick) is allowed in the event. When I was watching it I noticed it, and then the commentators immediately started talking about it, even before the race was over. The kick gave him that extra half-second lead (since he was losing at the end of the first leg and thats when he did his kick to inch ahead of the American).
It was unfair and probably would've been called correctly if the judges had underwater cameras like the TV viewing audience.
