No, you moron. I am well aware of the widely held legal definition of monopoly leverage.
I simply don't buy into that definition. I simply define more broadly. And no, I don't deem this worthly of anti-trust action. I do deem it worthy of boycott.
Scum like you usually don't have a problem with giving your money to criminal organizations. I do.
the PS2 and GameCube are both sold at a loss And your proof that the PS2 and GameCube are sold at a loss is where?
Rumor is that the PS2 and GameCube are both currently breaking even or making a profit. Just look at the GameCube: the machine was designed to be produced cheaply. The XBox on the other hand will never be produced (as) cheaply. Microsoft should just count itself lucky that Intel decided to flog Celerons for the XBox on a zero profit model just to spite AMD.
The 2 billion over 5 years was the initial projected loss. I imagine this was the loss figure that was presented to Gates and Ballmer so that the project could get an approval.
They have since upped the loss projects to 2 billion over the first two years of the project. See:
http://www.msnbc.com/news/772001.asp?0si=-
The XBox is classic monopoly leverage at work. Use the revenue from the desktop monopoly to dump product on an emerging market and attempt to control it.
I suggest boycotting Microsoft and purchasing a GameCube or PS2.
I agree. F*ck Slashdot. Or at least f*ck the Slashdot editor Michael. He has been posting at least 1 XBox article every two to three weeks.
The XBox is an economic anamoly. It wouldn't exist except for Microsoft's ability to leverage its desktop monopoly. The XBox has already lost 1 billion dollars. Its projected to lose another 1 billion dollars next year.
Boycott Microsoft, and purchase a GameCube or PS2.

RMS has been the recipient of several large "genius" awards. The latest award from some Japanese outfit, which he shared with Linus, was in the neighborhood of 500,000 bucks.
I wonder if RedHat gave him any shares when they did their IPO?
Bud, you must have missed out on ethics 101. Right and wrong are a very subjective things. Its all about point of view.
I consider it wrong for anyone to give money to an abusive mafia-like organization like Microsoft, so from my perspective so it _is_ wrong. When you discover a truly objective criteria for right and wrong that we can all agree on, get back to me and I'll check out this moral dilemma there.
Bill Gates is the Grand Lizard of the Illuminati and that XBox is his tool to effect a plan for World Domination hatched during the Fall of the Knights Templar
I don't believe any of that garbage. I do however feel that giving money to an abusive monopoly is not a good thing. Its your choice. If you bought an XBox, IMO, you did the wrong thing.
Oh, I guess not then. Please explain why Microsoft's closed proprietary console is worse for the games industry than Sony's closed proprietary console or Nintendo's closed proprietary console, because I just don't see it.
Its a matter of choosing the lesser of the evils. While the corporate histories of both Sony and Nintendo are not spotless, the countless dirty tricks that Microsoft has pulled are reason enough to never purchase another product from that company as long as I live. See: www.fuckmicrosoft.com.
The only exception is MS keyboards. I'll have to spend a few centuries in purgatory for that transgression but I can deal with that.
"Microsoft is not 30,000 people off thinking on their own, but one man thinking with 30,000 brains."
Is the statement above supposed to mean something?
The little rascals analogy is somewhat comical. What's funnier is your confused notion these 30,000 Microsoft employees are a highly ordered and locked step army that is "following one idea to completion".
This perception of yours was debunked years ago when the dirty illegal tactics, chicken wire and hubris that really animates those 30,000 people was revealed.
"I found the article fragmented and poorly written."
Hmm, maybe that's cause the article was _fragmented_ (it was clearly a hodge podge of Brin's thoughts on the subject) and also written with _little attention to detail_ (poor doesn't really apply here). The guy clearly has better things to do than spend lots of time correcting spelling mistakes on random thoughts on some B movie he took his kids to see.
"...we put a special non-free licence on all software which has been produced..."
More fine FUD from deno the Mandrakian.
Deno when are you going to stop lying out of your ass about other distros? I guess this would be the same time you stop deleting ever post from MandrakeForums that is slightly critical of Mandrake.
Wrong deno. SuSE doesn't put a special non-free license on all the software that they produce.
"It doesn't seem like a very smart business decision to lock yourself out of the fastest-growing market in the world."
Except that Microsoft acknowledges that it is effectively locked out of the existing Chinese market. Sure they do some business these days in China but nothing that they really care about. Microsoft's earnings in Asia have flat-lined for the past three years. That's right MS has ZERO appreciable growth in China and the Far East for a very long time. And they have achieved ZERO appreciable revenue growth in China during a period when Chinese IT has exploded.
Piracy is the rule in China. MS knows this. Their pricing effectively eliminates their software as a viable choice for the Chinese and third world markets.
MS has seen the rise of Linux in places like Taiwan and China and it has them scared shitless. They have no option but to go the DRM route.
" Having the installer be proprietary is dangerous. "
Except that Linux installers are a dime a dozen. And most of the major ones are quality and perform identically. The installer can be easily replaced, especially for the core of the distribution which for the most part is simply a list of the standard packages that every distro already includes.
What I imagine will occur is the rise of a FreeUnitedLinux distro. This distro will consist of the exact same source as UnitedLinux ships. It will simply have been been compiled on a different machine. It will include its own installer, or simply use the installer provided by one of the UnitedLinux distros that isn't propietary. It will include all of the extras that aren't specified in the UnitedLinux specification. This will satisfy anyone who wants free binaries.
"... to me and to everyone in the Linux community"
Wow, its an honor to finally meet the guy who speaks for the entire Linux community.:)
But seriously, I don't mind in the slightest what UnitedLinux is doing and I am a member of the Linux community (not exactly a note worthy member).
They are providing all of the source to their base distribution. That's all I need and want. Whiners like you cry just cause you can't download free binaries. Get over it. These people want to earn a profit and I feel that their plan is more than open enough for me. Their plan also stands to simplify application development, a huge barrier to Linux adoption.
Commenting on the Athlon, the article starts out with:
"running at 1800 MHz (2200+) with the AthlonXP CPUs already maxed out in both speed and heat"
The 2400+ and 2600+ Athlon will very likely be released on the 21st of THIS month. And they are supposed to be running much cooler. AMD found a glitch in the Athlons that was responsible for a good deal of the chips heat.
Actually AMD has managed to take 10% of the low end server market with their MP chips.
Its not much of a foot in the door but its something that should allow them to push Hammer into the market.
Besides if all of your 32 bit code still works on the Hammer (and runs fast), along side 64 bit code, then what's to prevent this chip from making a good entry into this market?
There's just no need from your limited perspective. What if from some crazy reason the guy didn't want to install MS Word or Internet Explorer when he installed his operating system?
Tssk. Microsoft has got the straight jacket so tight on you, you don't even notice it anymore.
That is NOT monopoly leverage.
No, you moron. I am well aware of the widely held legal definition of monopoly leverage.

The reason the X-Box is specificially mentioned is that it's the only system supporting the HDTV 1080i signal.
Bullshit, the reason XBox is mentioned in cause Michael, the slashdot editor, is a shameless XBox fan who is simply making his monthly XBox post.
I agree. F*ck Slashdot. Or at least f*ck the Slashdot editor Michael. He has been posting at least 1 XBox article every two to three weeks.

Since when can you get the source to WinXP Add/Remove Programs?
You can get the source to Yast.
" Oh, sorry - I haven't noticed that Yast licence has been abandoned..."
Then you also should also notice that they don't apply the license to every piece of software that they release.
Go back to MandrakeForum. Your time is better spent there performing your petty censorship.

Intel must be pleased. If SGI could manage to sell one of these that would double the number of Itaniums that Intel has managed to flog.

"Don't expect Slashdot to post anything remotely anti-Linux. "
Slashdot is constantly posting stuff that is anti-Linux.
Most of that anti-Linux stuff is run of the mill laughable Microsoft FUD:
Linux is un-American
Linux is a cancer
If the anti-Linux crowd could come up with some better anti-Linux stuff, then maybe it would get posted here.

MS Word was required by _that_ OEM install of Windows.
No, denied.
