    "We discovered that when we used the chip to stimulate the neurons, their synaptic strength was enhanced, ... " There was something like this in one of Asimov's books. The guys synapses are enhanced by a machine, then the guy starts to "feel" and "manipulate" things.

    Depends on the age. For younger children I'd teach Visual Basic instead of QuickBasic. For older ones, I'd start with C.

    So with the help of Microsoft, Chinese guys won't see "big tits".

    Of course, this is not the main problem. Freedom of speech is a major concern, and I wonder how much money will go to Microsoft (and others) from Chinese taxpayers.

    For most people like myself who only use their computer for 3D gaming, software development, video & image editing, writing papers, checking email, talking on IRC and reading /., well for us 1GHz is plenty.
    Man, 3D gaming, video & image editing _needs_ processing power. Besides you'll be more comfortable with faster processors in developing, believe me. (Compile time counts.)

    1Ghz is plenty for the rest of your list, though.

    You could consider switching to w3m, a very cool console web browser. It's cool. I'd used it a lot. Because of my job, I have to use Windows so now I'm surfing with IE6.

    I suppose a dual P4, 1GB RAM and an ATI Radeon 9700 based graphics card and Windows 2000 Professional will do very well and it will be cheap enough.
