Hmm, somehow I get the feeling I know why you were invited. What the hell were you doing fixing someone's machine at a party!
Jeez, get some self respect! Even if it was a family member or something, you're there to get drunk, laid, stoned or something else more enjoyable than trawling a pc for spyware.
Funny... the first time I visited that site, I couldn't help but marvel at how close it was in appearance to some of the flash sites available at Template Monster
Should have been able to pick it up for under a grand plus a little bit of customisation time!;-)
If I had mod points you would be getting them. I'm sorry, potential lawsuits or not, you do the right thing. How many firemen do you think worry about getting slightly toasty when going into a burning building? Exactly.
To be blessed with the skills to save lives and then dont use them? I wonder how that doctor would have felt if it was a family member in one of those cars and all the nearby doctors just passed on by. What a scumbag.
Also live in the UK, and know of Scunthorpe. Never thought about it being pronounced that way before. Strangely enough though, there's a place just up the road from me called "Lord Hereford's Knob"!
That reminds me of the GTA advertising. They set up a huge billboard with cameras all around it and encouraged people to "Steal this game". I didn't ever see the footage being used, but it seemed like a pretty clever idea at the time.
If Ion have got any sense whatsoever they will not draw attention to the fact that the developers of Thief 3 have anything to do with the developers that made DX:IW. Most of us that were fans of the original Thief games are praying that Warren stayed the hell away from the Thief team and let them get on with it. That, or we're going to end up with unified arrows. Grrr.
Still, the screenshots look great and I'm really hoping that they pull this one out of the bag.
>> If a program needs some piece of information, and there's some way the program can find it out without asking the user, the program MUST find it out by itself.
It's funny really, because this was one of the first things I was ever taught. No, "Hello world" or any of that junk, just a basic rule:
"Users are stupid, don't let them enter data unless they absolutely have to. Let them see the data you generate for them (Helps the user feel in control) and allow them to change it if neccesary."
It has always stood me in good stead. I must admit that unfortunately it does make me a slow-ass developer that spends waaaay too much time working on the UI. But my customers never complain.:-)
You know... I've always thought that if I was going to do anything particularly dodgy I would have precautions in place for the FBI eventuality.
Fairly simple - Create yourself a nice custom HDD enclosure and imagine the best way to kill the data on it. You could have a couple of electromagnets on a switch, or perhaps some minor explosives would do the job. Better still? Battery backed up RAM Drives. Power off for 30mins? Bye bye data (Or you could use a switch for the instant effect).
I wonder where the law stands if you actually destroyed the data that was supposed to convict you? Sure it would look dodgy as hell, but in the case of the RAM drives could the court even prove it was your fault?
I certainly see your point, but in my eyes it's no different than the lady in your life sitting and going into a trance over Joe Millionaire or Friends (Insert show here). It's certainly not an excuse to have a go at them or act like a 5 year old because they aren't spending time with you.
Perhaps that's the female thing though, maybe it's just that men like a bit of time to themselves and women would rather spend it together. Still, there are always two player games! Better still perhaps are adventure games or games with strong storylines that you can both get into.
I've actually been very suprised recently by finding out how outright hostile women can be towards games / gamers. A friend of mine was staying over with his girlfriend and she stopped him from playing on the console with us. She even threatened to go and stay in a hotel if he started playing. I was gobsmacked. She softened up a bit in the end when I taught her the buttons on one game and she managed to beat my mate on quite a few occasions.
I suppose I'm quite lucky on that front. My missus plays games more than I do (More spare time) and recently I've noticed that she's managing to kick my ass on certain games. I dont know if it's a gender thing but she seems much more able (Patience might come into it) to learn and pull off the combos in fighting games. I don't even attempt to play Soul Calibur 2 or DOA against her anymore!
I wonder how many other people have experienced such extreme hostility towards playing games from their significant others? I know that my brother gets grief every time he puts a game on and as such very rarely gets a chance to play games anymore.
I was thinking that. When implementing backup systems in a previous job of mine I always used to find that the disk subsystems were the weakest link. 1 Terabyte in 7 mins would need some seriously impressive disk arrays.
Oh god... I really, really hope you have a superb firewall & username & password blocking that machine off from the world. I did just read you right, you didn't have the admin password, so you you used a tool over the remote administration to hack past it?
Mmmm... hackalicious.:-)
(I've actually used a similar remote kvm system with lights out boards but until you write it down it just doesn't sound that risky!)
I haven't had enough sleep, because that headline came out as "Slashdot Interviews Robot Love". I thought we were going to have the interesting story of the worlds first robot pornstar.
Actually... it wouldn't be such a problem would it? I'd happily earn indian software engineering wages if I could pay what the indians pay for housing / food / whatever.
But lets face it, it's never going to happen because as you said - It's the same people shipping out the jobs that are throwing out lawsuits to stop consumers reaping the benefits of globalisation.
That doesn't quite work out. I know software developers in the UK that are earning the same as burger franchise supervisors in the US. I've actually done the calculations based on taxes, healthcare etc etc and trust me, the Americans have an AMAZING deal.
I'd agree on that one and also say Computer Prices
Yup, I'm up for some of that. I'll bring the tissues...
Damn you to hell. I just spat coke all over my monitor! :-(

Yes, I realised my mistake. Stupid lack of ability to edit posts!
Ack... apologies to the God (A.K.A. Warren Spector.). I was of-course intending to curse Harvey Smith.

.Net? Seriously, I just can't see how it can be even moderately concerning.
There there... It's just a bad dream, go back to sleep.
Umm, just what exactly is frightening about

>> We've already talked about her bringing me on board if things look good from the inside.
:-o
I must be turning into a Slashdot nerd; because I managed to read something sexual in that comment.
Ack, time to go outside and play some sports or something!

Oh well, back to my deranged little world...

Ack... I take it body coloured bumpers and SUVs with bullbars aren't too popular over there then.
