I worked for iMagicTV in partnership with Newbridge networks (remember them?) in the 'frontier days' of ITPV in 1999 and 2000.
I read through the patent, there is a lot of prior art for this.
In June 2000 I was at Supercom in Atlanta and was involved in at least 6 booths who were publically selling this same 'System and method for providing integrated voice, video and data to customer premises over a single network ' solution. There were several public trials underway by the time this patent was filed.
This is not a tough one to defeat - this is just some wise-ass at Cisco getting his patent compensation cheque.
And what a vague patent - it looks like it would cover any form of Internet broadcasting.
You borrowed $314 billion from foreign investors, and my buddy from Cuba will love this one, because you have borrowed $52.5 billion from Communist China. You have borrowed $122 billion from Japan. We now owe $1.3 trillion to foreign nations and investors, including $122 billion to Communist China. Tell me you are proud of that. Tell me the Republican majority is proud that we owe $122 billion to China and that $50 billion a year of American tax dollars go to pay interest on what we owe just to foreigners like the Communist Chinese.
Now in 2006, politicians are spending quicker than ever and the amount of debt China holds has gone up a bit
Currently, China is holding $769 billion, the vast majority of its foreign exchange reserves.
So for politicians rambling on about how US corporations are falling into line to please the Chinese, the fact that in order to keep these loans coming in the Government must be friendly to this communist country and still not recognize the democratic Taiwan.
There are bigger structural problems in the USA right now - an alarming statistic is that the average american household has $8k - $10k in credit card debt. This is incredible.
'we thought it would encourage readers to get a broader perspective by digging deeper into the news -- reading ten articles instead of one, perhaps -- and then gain a better understanding of the issues, which could ultimately benefit society.'
You know, I completely agree with this. I find myself looking at different perspectives on the same news item - comparing BBC to CBC to Fox News to Al Jazeera to Pravada, and so on.. not everytime, mind you:) But it does help you try to get an overall objective perspective.
Wow pyramid schemes are getting more expensive to buy into all the time!
This 'developer' spends $26,500 He subdivides and sells to 5 friends at $15k a piece They subdivide and sell to 5 friends at $7k a piece They subdivide and sell to 5 friends at $5k a piece
What a pretty (cant wait to see the graphics) picture of an old scam...
Fibre to the home is what I'm excited about in this SBC deal.. look at how much money SBC just committed to Alcatel to provide the FTTH gear!
I'm doubtful the MS IPTV stuff will work - look how long they've tried to sell a cableco their cable tv product. 20 billion, is the number I'm seeing. But they have zero tv ip real world experience.

I just returned back to Canada after having lived in the Netherlands (Maastricht) for the last 3 years. Now I'm back to the 'tv guide channel' to find out what is on air, 4:3 tv, NTSC, $500k fines for exposed nipples AND MY GOD THE COMMERCIALS! Holy crap North American TV has a lot of commercials.
Teletekst was fantastic for finding out what was on TV
Of course without it, you haven't a chance in hell of remembering your weekly tv show starts at 6:18pm every second Tuesday. Programs start at seemingly random moments in the day.
I'm finding myself quickly leaving sites that are built, either intentionally or out of ignorance, as IE-only.
With tabbed browsing, fantastic bookmark controls (add bookmark here and synchronized bookmarks), great content tools (bugmenot, adblock), the browser goes almost everywhere.
Folks who are reading this and who made the plunge, but still use Outlook, SWITCH TO THUNDERBIRD! While I wasn't very happy with the seemingly random way my old emails were imported (messages with multiple mime parts dont have the correct items displayed on the pane, and others meant to be displayed as shown as 'part1.1' attachments), I was incredibly happy with the abilities and extensions of the program.
Specifically, I found Thunderbird very happy to deal with my POP3 and IMAP accounts, interface very easily with GnuPG (via Enigmail)
Mozilla really sucked for quite awhile, but these days I'm surprised when I find people who still only use IE. How 2001.
I look forward to the work being done on calendaring.
A really good site I've been lurking on is dvxuser which is a collection of folks who are shooting on the 24p DVX100(a) Panasonic camera. Some of these folks have produced some very amazing footage.
There is a new forum on that board looking at the new 24p model of the Canon that was just announced.
Another thing to think about is the next gen of camera which is 'just around the corner' - the HDV standard. While it doesn't look to support the 24p the above cameras offer, 720p & 1080i on a mini-dv tape sure looks exciting.
There's always new gear though. The DVX and XL crowds have an almost religious zeal to their love of their kit so maybe start by looking at these two cameras if you can afford them - at least you then keep your options open. 'film look' as well as 'news report' settings depending on your vision.
Sorry.. I keep forgeting Americans use the dollar too... indeed the Canadian..
I just checked these guys here and they're still pretty pricey, but HP is offering cheaper models now (unlike the compaq ipaq days when I bought my 3870)
Who is the target market for these? The early Palm made it to my Geek toolkit because it was less than 300 bucks. For a corporation, you can argue 'palm pilot, 300 bucks, filofax, 300 bucks'. But in that 700-1200 dollar mark they all seem to be in now, who is the market for these devices?
Yes it's fun to have a biometric, wifi, bluetooth, blah blah rig (I used to use mine in Gare du Nord in Paris to check my mail via GPRS when I was waiting to leave Paris by train - I had a job where I was very mobile and the company agreed it was a good purchase). But I can't see it a justifiable purchase these days.
Ok.. reading the patent application is a tough one. Talking about a time interval between successive mouse clicks activating a 2nd application.. woooooo..
I see the application seems to be an extension of something started in 1999.. still I was double clicking before that..
Most interesting though is their choice of capitalization in the application. Look at this:
...One such palm-type computer is Microsoft's Palm-size PC. The Palm-size PC has a touch screen display... (exact quote)
When you see 'palm-type', fine.. an adjective modifying the word computer to define the type. But reading on you see '.. Microsoft's Palm-size PC'. That looks like a product name. But wait, isn't Palm a trademark of someone we all know and love
I have the same thing in the netherlands with ABN, a 'pin pad' that I pop my card into. I type in my PIN to authenticate, then the challenge the bank website gives me, then the pin pad returns a result I type in to perform a log in or a payment/transfer... don't let your kids play with it.. you'll find yourself locked out of your bank card haha
I dealt several years with the Royal Bank of Canada and they have been the most arrogant, obnoxious sons of bitches..
Bankers who never return phone calls, interest rates higher than other banks, crazy random-number service fees.
I went in one day comparing mortgages and shopped around. The Royal's offer seemed pretty high compared to the others and the response was a brush off, 'sorry there is nothing we can do to help you'. I closed my accounts and moved everything to Scotia and have been very happy since...
Canada just recently auctioned off similar sized channels in the 3.5 GHz band. Unlike the wisp's out there running WIFI, there is no mass-market gear available to feasibly use the space.
Wi-lan's ofdm stuff is fantastic but not suited to anything other than premium business wireless subscribers - certainly not something you would use for rural residential offerings.
It's amazing the seat sales that mysteriously appear in the Maritimes (a lower volume area of the country) whenever a competitor decides to offer service here...
Maybe these 250k site visits was just the poor fella trying to book travel to Vegas.. I try using my aeroplan points.. but there just never seems to be any seats.

Web 2.0 baby, lets drive up the stock in this cool startup to some insane number like 129 billion dollars!

I knew I had heard of that domain - I was just on there the other day looking at rtsp support for VLC.
On November 26th, the website was this but now it appears to be here
Wonder how much this guy got paid by Microsoft for the domain.. good for him!
I just swtiched to Kazaa
where did everybody go?
Oh how I long for thee again!
Working from my hotel.. beer in hand.. oh shit! glug glug glug glug *mad dive to save the beer*
Too late, spilled the beer - oh, and spilled it on the laptop.
Thermal protection kicks in, Laptop shuts off. Turn down the brightness so the laptop stays on.
Lost about 8 keys. Had to use alt codes to log back on my laptop because I lost the ASDZXC keys.
If we have a 'day-after-tommorrow'ish' winter coming anyways then I want a couple years to sell my house and enjoy the warmer weather.
The main MSN page comes up, but the search result times out..
'beta.search.sympatico.msn.ca' times out haha
Oh wait, there it goes. 5th time trying it.
Is anyone having any luck getting the whois data for this domain?

Arrogant bastards, serves them right for SCO

Nerve Cells... Silicon... Beowulf Cluster... SCO... iPOD... Groklaw...
... Oh, and, I love my ipod.
think about how much PAIN and ANGER a Beowulf CLUSTER would feel after reading about SCO on Groklaw!
There.. all the hot topics bound into one uninformed, off topic reply (I didn't read the original post)
I feel so at home.. shit, forgot to karma whore..
After spending time frustrated at the battery life of my ipod, I read this bit of sentence...
..
Just as Frodo exists basically to transport that precious ring to where it needs to go,
and thought about how many times I've wanted to send my ipod to the same firey doom..
ahh but I couldn't do that to the little guy..
