  7. A long shot, and probably not a good idea... on Namco's Taiko Drumming Games To Debut In West · · Score: 1

Taiko drumming is a rather traditional thing in Japan, and it's something completely different from jam sessions in a rock band or anything like that. It'd be like trying to bring a Noh drama to the US - It's just too foreign to Americans. Donkey Konga likely stands a better chance simply because it'll be easier to identify with - Americans have seen conga drumming before.

The reason I say that it's probably not a good idea is that the probable failure of a product like this could lead to less likely chances of other music games crossing the Atlantic, like many of the fantastic Bemani games Konami puts out. A game like Beatmania or Keyboardmania is much more likely to succeed in the states, but if Taiko no Tatsujin fails, then the chances of more Bemani (outside of DDR) coming over get even smaller.

And, if you're using diet mode, don't use official steps, as it only counts correct arrows pressed. Use the default, all steps mode. If your leg moves, count it!

    You're confused.

The game will only count correct steps if you're playing in "Regulation Mode", which is selectable in the Options menu. Otherwise, it'll count calories regardless of whether or not your steps are correct.

Whether or not you use official steps (as opposed to Edit Data) has nothing to do with it. I think you just got confused.

You actually lose more if you're a beginner, because you make missteps.

I also question this - it depends on your skill level. Yes, at first, you'll lose more, since everyone starts out trying to stick to the middle square, and so they shift weight and change feet a lot. However, once you've gotten good enough to do, say, Dynamite Rave on Light/Basic, you should've moved beyond that habit.

And once you've passed 5-footers, the burn rate goes even higher. Your generalization could lead someone to think that it's not ever worth it to do a Paranoia or Max300, which simply is not the case.

Now, I have no experience with the latest Ignition pads. I do know they're available at EB and Gamestop. I know they're considered the best of the soft pads. But be warned! Every soft pad has a limited lifespan. When one arrow stops working, the rest of the pad is useless.

From what I've heard, if you take out the foam inserts and replace it with another material (like an eggshell foam mat or something), they'll be much more durable. I dunno myself - I had two softpads that died quickly, spent a while in the arcade, and then just got a pair of RedOctane metal pads over Christmas after having tried them at a convention. They're built like tanks.

  12. Let's not forget the Phantom... on CES 2004 Coverage · · Score: 5, Interesting

    From GamesIndustry.biz:

Infinium Labs' proposed console, the Phantom, has made a showing at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas as announced by the company earlier this week, but only in the form of a box which was not switched on.

The Florida-based start-up showed off a Phantom console on the Windows Embedded Device showcase stand at the event, but although the system sported a full array of connectors on the backplate, it was not powered up or demonstrated in any way.

In terms of physical design, the box is almost exactly the same as the previously seen concept art and renders, and its size belies the standard PC components from which it is built.

However, the fact that Infinium Labs did not properly demonstrate the console working is likely to add fuel to speculation that the entire project is some form of elaborate hoax or scam - even though this seems increasingly unlikely.

The presence of the Phantom on the Windows Embedded Device stand, if nothing else, proves that if Infinium Labs is a hoax, it is a hoax which has taken in Microsoft along with several other key companies in the industry.

Hoax or not, however, such a lacklustre and content free unveiling for the machine on its first public outing is unlikely to boost confidence in the device, which promises a "new way to deliver content" for the games industry, ever actually making it to the market.

There is a way to counter this.

Let's assume we're dealing with retinal scans. Do an intensive datapoint scan to establish the record. Field scanners are less-equipped, only capable of scanning a subset of this data (thus, they're cheaper). The subset would, of course, have to be sufficiently large to ensure uniqueness.

Now, the field scanners randomize which subset they take each time a scan is performed. That way, if someone does "kidnap" your eyeballs, they've only got a solution to one particular scan, and not the complete set. They have no way of knowing beforehand if using their newly-acquired eyeballs will meet the criteria for the next scan or not.

It'd be like having a strong 50-character password that you never forgot (just work with me), and the authentication mechanism only asks for characters 2, 8, 9, 16, 22, 24, 26, 34, 39, and 40. Next time, it asks for a different ten characters.

An added layer of security would be for the person to provide a login credential first. In other words, the retinal scan shouldn't be *both* username and password. Let the user provide the username (or SSN or whatever), and the retinal scan will be the password.
