  1. Re:Um, it's Red Book complient? on SACD-CD Hybrids -- A Way Out For Us Both? · · Score: 2

i was hoping the record industry would give this a try because most people would be happy with standard cd quality, and i'd be happy with the increase in sound quality. if you don't quiet down, they'll scrap the hybrid idea for something people can't copy at all

if the quality increase is going to be negligable, who cares?

if they are going from ~700MB to ~4.7GB, i would hope that there is considerable room for a substantial increase in quality. doubling both the sample rate and the bit depth makes a 700MB cd into a little over 2.7GB, leaving just under half of the available space for drm. somehow i think they could manage a drastic sound quality increase. they could even cut back a little on drm and throw in more parity for scratch protection.

  2. Re:not likely on SACD-CD Hybrids -- A Way Out For Us Both? · · Score: 2

Most eople are willing to settle for MP3 quality.

most people do not know there is much of a sound quality difference.

It's called digital technology and it's not going to go away

and we are not the only ones trying to find new ways to use it. the recording industry will also.

The sooner we realize that the genie is out of the bootle and get past useless copy-protection schemes, the sooner we can move on to figuring out how to get artists paid without a pay-per-copy model

this i agree with. i just don't see the industry doing that soon. in the mean time i see them using drm. eventually the studios or the artists will find a Better Way, but i don't think it will be the next step.

  3. Re:Um, it's Red Book complient? on SACD-CD Hybrids -- A Way Out For Us Both? · · Score: 2

the freely copiable layer acts like a regular red book compliant cd in drives that can read red-book compliant cds. the other layer is invisible to players/drives using the current cd standard.

the layer with drm is a higher quality recording that will be usable only in drives made for sacd. this layer sounds better than current cds do, so this is the incentive to get the drm-encumbered sacd.

    does that straighten it out?

  4. Re:not likely on SACD-CD Hybrids -- A Way Out For Us Both? · · Score: 4, Insightful

that may be, but there just isn't much way around it. the recording industry wants to be able to cut piracy back. i say if they are willing to continue letting people have things at current cd quality, that's not to shabby. sure, it would be nice to have access to the higher quality stuff, but i just don't see it happening.

if the recording industry starts using this standard and allows unlimited usage of the (currently) regular cd quality, that is pretty fair.

they also give a reason for buying the drm encumbered discs. higher quality! it's a trade-ff.

we won't be able to copy everything easily forever. at least this still allows the customer to have some fair use.

  5. Re:NOT FREE..... on CDs Want To Be Free · · Score: 3, Insightful

The promotion work that is done when the artist goes on tour - that costs money: TV spots, banner ads, Ticketmaster kick-backs, deposits for venues, etc., etc.

Don't forget that concert tickets cover a lot of this expense. even after ticketmaster takes their cut, the remaining amount is more than the price of a new cd for most big-name artists. touring is great promotion because it usually makes money and encourages cd sales.

There's a significant cost involved in promoting new music ... now, should you have to pay for lots of bad artists to be able to release their music?!? Maybe not, but that's the breaks. You can't really weed out the good from the mediocre before you incur all those costs ...

promotional costs are the reason why some cds that bring in tens of millions of dollars still don't turn a profit. when the promotional budget is in the tens of millions of dollars, chances are this is more than the production costs.

now, about mediocre artists. why can't these costs be avoided? shouldn't the recording industry be spending a little more money trying to figure out if a band sucks or not? it is my opinion that they spend more time considering whether they have a *chance* at marketing it successfully. they excuse away an artist's shortcomings by arguing it doesn't matter because if they throw enough money into marketing people will buy it anyway. (often they are correct) even if the labels are gambling, i think they would do much better for themselves trying to get a little more quality. initial costs probably wouldn't increase if marketing budgets were reduced accordingly (followin a theory that it costs less to sell something people are more likely to want than it does to convince people it's what they want and then convince them to shell money out for it).

as someone else pointed out, tapes cost less than cds. people don't want them as much, so if they cost more, people wouldn't buy them. the costs get bundled onto what people will buy.

my complaint isn't that cds only cost .30 or .40 to press. my complaint is that the model for deciding how to spend money that causes a cd to cost 18.00 instead of about 10.00 is flawed. the only costs that are not one-time expenses are manufacturing and royalties. everything else is pay once. all of the expenses you mentioned could be covered if the hype machine were a little more efficient in deciding what and how to promote things.

we'd all end up with cheaper cds of higher quality.

but actually, episode 2 has been anticipated since 1977. of course, i was two then, but i do remember seeing it in the theatres. (my parents learned quickly that they should stop asking me which movie i wanted to go see.) the original movie was always labeled episode 4 (or iv, but i'm lazy). i can remember all sorts of rumours of making the prequil trilogy and the sequil trilogy all the way from grade school into college. for me there is more anticipation because the reality of it never seemed so far off.

i agree that episode 1 wasn't very good. there are many reasons i felt that way, but they've all already been discussed many times over in many different places. for some reason i hold on to hope for the rest. they probably won't be classics, but i hope they are decent.

i don't know if you can compare groups interested in seeing the two movies until the numbers are in.

my original point was that even many who were disappointed, even upset, by episode one will still line up to see episode 2. especially since there is rumour that episode 2 will deliver everything people missed in the phantom menace. whether it lives up to expectations remains to be seen. one of the reasons are high is because if this one is as bad as the last one, no one will see the third one. i think lucas knows this, too. this just helps make expectations higher. but i think star wars fans, even die'hard fans are more willing to overlook shortcomings than fans of other series.

i guess i believe the core of star wars fans to be much stronger than you do. that's fine. neither of us is likely to change the other's mind. let's wait for numbers.

it would be interesting to compare their first two weekends. word of mouth and reviews can have a big effect on what people go to see the next weekend. there could also be a difference in weekend revenues because star wars is opening mid-week while spidey opened on a friday.

it was a good idea to open spidey on so many screens. and spidey's continuing box office take may be affected by the reviews of star wars. if everyone says attack of the clones sucks, people will remember episode one.

but if episode two is good, people will remember why it is they loved star wars in the first place. then spiderman might suffer a bit. but i don't think spiderman will do poorly, just not as well as it would without having to compete with star wars. i thought it was a good movie, even if it wasn't 100% "pure."

let's be honest, whether it be nostalgia or marketing or anything else, you have to admit that episode 2 has been anticipated for a much longer time than spiderman. people are going to see it. even people who think it will suck will go see it. come on, it has the origins of boba fett. i just hope when i go see it, i will not be too disappointed.
