(First of all, I remember only smatterings of the books, so I am not a true fanboy, so this si a uniquely outside approach from most/.ers.)
I know I risk my karma saying this, and it might offend a few fans, but IMHO there are a few categories that no one should have let LOTR into....
Editing- Editing is often a masterful way to knock out useless dialogue that doesn't work to propel the plot forward. It is also important for action sequences. The example of "The Strider Love scene" could have been put in another movie, and is useless to the current plot. It shows Jackson's flaws with the dailies. When the director knows when to throw somehting away to propel the film forward... LOTR had a lot of falling flat moments from a first-time viewers point of view, and a lot of confusion best left out. THIS WILL PROBABLY WIN IF NO ONE GOES TO SEE MEMENTO AT THE SCREENINGS. OR LIKES BIG SWORDS.
Cinematography- I subscribe to American Cinematographer, would love to be one. I work as a professional photographer. So I am a little biased in this one. Lighting is the real secret of a good DP. Good photography comes from good, motivated lighting designs. I didn't see that much artistry in the lighting... the scenery was excellent. However, getting a well composed, well exposed shot in a gorgeous, lush background hardly makes you an artist. Don't confuse the subject with the artist. That being said, Cinematography is really an art... and should be voted on by the all the DPs with Ridley Scott, David Fincher, The Steven, Sam Mendes, and Barry Sonnenfeld included. THIS WILL WIN THIS CATEGORY, BECAUSE NO ONE KNOWS THE DIFFERENCE. Give it to Moulin. PLeeeease.
PICTURE AND DIRECTOR- They are often one in the same. But if he could have found a way around some of the dragging points with characters other than the Hobbits (personally I don't know how he could have done this, movies are designed almost exclusively around one hero/villain design), then it would definitely be his. BEAUTIFUL MIND OR PERHAPS BLACKHAWK BECAUSE OF THE STRONG STATEMENTS IT MAKES.
But doesn't this kind of device actually improve delivery of this kind of target audience to the advertisers?
I mean really... Cmon. This is the reality of any high profit industry. They (the television gurus) send an army of lawyers after anyone that would disrupt their outrageously high profit margins. Its the same with porn, movies, and cigarettes.
Be honest, we're talking about something the sizee of a CD-Rom, when we all drive SUVs and eat LeMenu dinners on full-size plate packages for one stinkin' meal. This place is absolutely craqwling with junk for merchandising purposes.
This won't help, but the packaging around food items is the real crime these days. I'm not for the little disks, but to get a snack these days you have to dig through a pound of crap.
First of all, it is written by an Aussie that thinks he knows so much about US law and political history that he claims that Americans have a ho-hum attitude about their rights.
in America, those groups simply claim that the government can't do that (whatever that may be) because of the Constitution - hence some people simply say "oh well, doesn't seem too important anyway
Wow! I didn't know I thought that way. Thanks Aussie! It clarifies a lot about my personality. God bless that Aussie insight! Cuz I don't know where I'd be without pedantic generalizations.
Here's another great zinger...
in Australia, we value those freedoms much more
Which explains that 'Aussie War of Independence'.... and the fact that the Aussies have had entire generations spending billions of dollars promoting democracies all over the globe. Unlike those xenophobic Americans that closed off their borders. LOL.:P
At the end of the day I would just like to say please ask the people what they think instead of relying on conjecture and dinner party talk.
LOL... when you see +5 insightful on a post like that, you really need a sense of humor on/.
One of the things that people might get in the future is one idea I had of "direct movie merchandising," say from Pepsi or whoever. You will see an ad on the TV saying that the "Pepsi Movie" is available at your local convenience store, and also might come in the mail like those MF'n AOL disks (*cringe*). You pick up the free made movie and watch it with a slew of interactive games as well as the film.
The real kicker? Its a children's movie. So as a parent, you let your kids watch it again, and again, and again....
Will widescale, high bandwidth access ever become the norm, rather than the exception?
Wow, that's like people asking the telephone company in 1920s if they will ever have a time that they won't have to share a party line with another family.
OF Course it will. If there is anything that can be said in economics about any technology, it always operates at a 'discounted future.' Meaning that price will drop, and availability will increase. This is a given, unless free markets are not at play.
This is basic economics. I know that many of you believe that there is some major problem with the fact that your cable modem costs might be going up, but the truth of the matter is that the bandwidth is a commodity... and a commodity pricing scheme is different than a service pricing scheme. Commodity is based on cost, delivery, and infrastructure, and little else. Its cheaper because it is almost fully interchangeable. So in other words, you are costing them more... therefore they are forced to charge you more. They have run themselves into the ground because there is a non-commodity pricing scheme with a commodity.
Also, Nimda and Code Red would have been shut down quicker if they realized that a huge bill was coming out of that mess.
Conversely, it should be that if you use less than anyone else, then you should also get the opportunity to save money... that is where this scheme is jacked. We all know that will never happen.
Although it is not a perfect system, think about how much cable modems would cost you in ISDN lines.
A president we did not elect, heading a government bought off by corporations, arrogantly and agressively pushes a pro-corporate domestic agenda and foreign policy. Now over 6,000 people are dead and he say's we're at "war", fighting secret battles against unknown enemies, and he wants everyone to be "patriots" by forsaking our civil liberties and going "shopping".
He, like all people who are against "the new corporate government war" forget to mention the one little thing that we are all trying to forget. These people attacked innocent, non-military citizens on a clear Tuesday morning with the intent to kill as many people as possible.
Are all of you Anarcho nutbags so blinded by your hatred of the state that you forget the lives of innocents so that you can talk about war?
These people don't want to overthrow our government, they want us all dead. They attack innocents. They murder their own people. They attacked us first, with techniques that we taught them for their independence.
They can't be trusted. This clown that got busted broke into computers and tried to get military information, and then also started to keep files on undercover agents.
You would not argue with the violent overthrow of a slave master, and the US Govt. is little more than that.
Wow. That is some serious bullshit you sling there mister. If you only saw the face of slavery for what it is. Don't cheapen others lives.
You should go look at the RAWA website or amnesty international if you want to see what the hell slavery looks like (www.rawa.org). I personally am not a slave... I AM A CITIZEN. The last time I checked, there is a large difference.
Personally, it is a slap in the face to all of the people that have died under slavery when you make those kinds of statements. You should be ashamed of the way that you speak about human rights, after all, you have more than most by just talking here.
SPOILED CHILD... You need to learn a little respect, so go to Uganda and talk to some people without hands before you start making statements that insult the suffering and dead.
Slave to America, or slave to your fasionable rebellion?
I didn't say marijuana. I personally could care less about marijuana. It isn't an aggressive drug, so legalize it, fine. Tax it to high heaven. Hell, you can even drive a car high on marijuana the last time my pharmaceutically-inclined brother checked (not that I endorse that, no way! that might cost lives).
Just if you legalize it... tax it like crazy to go after all of the hardcore street drugs. Those are the ones that are causing the deaths.
I didn't source out my statistic because I can't remember, it was so long ago. But if you look at the national crime statistics, it'll be close. I think it was a book on drug regulation, both for and against, and it let you decide. As you can all see which side I chose. My decision.
I am a news photographer, so I see A LOT OF HOMICIDES AND VIOLENT CRIMES. I can personally attest to the validity of that statistic as one of the most consistent guys in the commmunity that shows up at the violent crimes. I'd personally say 90%. It always seems to be there. It is a de facto question to the police and bereaved.
I realize everyone's need for recreation. But there are better ways to have fun in my opinion, and I have no reservations about making street drugs illegal and heavily regulated. For all of you ladies and gents that want to legalize marijuana, all I can say is I'm sorry... like I said, I could care less about marijuana.
There is a reason that the US has a "drug war" is that by their very nature, drugs make people do things that they normally wouldn't do. I could care less about drugs. But the category of 'things people normally wouldn't do' usually means killing convenince store clerks for $200. THAT IS SOMETHING I DO CARE ABOUT. There are definitely overzealous police out there that destroy peoples lives, but there is an interesting statistic about drugs...
Fact: 85% of all violent crimes in the US are committed because of, or under the direct influence of drugs.
That statistic has been around since hard core drugs... and has remained constant.
Does that mean that your friend that does pot is evil? Hell no. Or anyone that does pot evil? No. Have I personally seen a pot deal gone bad that caused the death of people? Hell yes.
Really, its all about the junkie violence, and making sure that you don't get shot walkig through a bad neighborhood. Or harassed by a drug addict every time you pump your gas.
I know most people speak of rehab. But what are the assurances that they're going to make it? AND WHAT IF THEY DON'T? If you're on the hard stuff, back to stealing, and if you're really strung out... stickin up people when you're not thinkig straight.
They have to go after the dealers. They're the ones with the money and influence. Its purely a minimumization game. Everyone is right when they say that you can't stop it.
Really, the police could give a shit about you getting high. Your boss cares about that. The police care about some idiot getting so strung out that they do something insane and attack John and Jane Q. Public.
"Bill Clinton's legacy is now "the guy who got a hummer in the Oval Office", instead of "the guy who purjured himself, obstructed justice, and disgraced the Presidency".
Unfortunately, the problem was that the inquiry was checking in on infidelity, not matters of state.
Personally, if you were sitting in a talk with Arafat and other leaders, discussing world politics, trying to broker a peace resolution, and all you get is... "Sir, could you please talk about where your cock has been? The public needs to know!" YOU'D LIE. You'd tell them anything to get off of your back.
I don't know a single person who has never lied about their sex life. Ever.
Disgracing the Presidency is what happens when your Vice President meets with huge corporate crooks that steal pensions, rob shareholders, and then denies it that he tried to help them... all because they helped buy his office chair. THAT IS REAL DAMAGE TO REAL CITIZENS. THAT IS REAL IMMORALITY. On the grand scheme of things, 50k jobs being lost and pensions stolen is much larger than the President's wang.
Honestly, the President's wang is classified under one category, Department of the First Lady. The American people could have given a shit about that. It was his political enemies that abused that to the point of impeachment.
One time, a few years ago, a shall remain nameless television cable network was in trouble financially. Ready to go down the tubes. And one of their more common shows that they carried and got good numbers from was The Dukes of Hazzard.
Now what they did was, cut the junk out (watch Dukes again if you don't know what I mean) speed it up a little bit and then speed up the car chases (adding more action... VROOOM!) and took that space to sell more ads. Ultimately it worked and helped out the company, although those that watch TV with a critical eye noticed a little difference that they more laughed about than were really upset over.
It more than paid for itself, and as far as I know, you'd have to really look closely to care.
I see no problem with this technology. It has more of a use for MTV and sports programming when the re-broadcasts run an inordinantly long amount of time or award show celebrities drone on, and you just need to round off a little after you made your timefit edit.
NOW I KNOW THAT MANY OF YOU MIGHT OBJECT, but this really is better than slashing subplots. This keeps the overall show more intact AND helps pay the bills. After all, anyone that says that there is a crisis in the fact that television is going down the tubes, well, this basically doesn't change a thing as far as content. After all, TV is for profit.
First of all, although it will do you no good, blame the Government for all of the wonderful deregulation in the workplace.
It will do you no good, because "the will of the masses" couldn't get John McCain in the White House, well after his candidacy yielded three times the support of Bush or Gore in the primaries. Think how different our country would be for the working man with a reforming, respectful, ex-POW in the big chair. All of that campaign money is now going to screw you in this "financial crisis." By the way, financial crisis means "we will not cut into our profits one dime, so we will CUT YOU." Expect fun legislation that will take decades to undue in the next year.
Second, blame Manpower. After all, they're only the largest employer in the US. They treat peole like cattle, hold your checks for weeks so that you feel forced to stay at your crappy temp job... and sometimes never pay off. I should know, my sister got screwed by them. So this poor person that lost a weeks pay, well, they aren't alone... pray it wasn't two.
They keep the money coming late so you can never be ahead of anything, and be able to leave your job to pursue a better one. This is no different than the coal towns of West Virginia in the late 1800s, where they were far away from everyone, so the company charged more than they got paid, and they got more and more in debt until their children worked the mines.
Manpower is no different. After all, they are America's largest employer (of late, no benefit, no security funds to people who can't afford an education)! JOIN THE MANPOWER TEAM TODAY!
Thats right! Someone in the Slashdot audience can win a shiny new dollar (Yeah! AUDIENCE GOES- Ohhhh! Aaaaaahhh!) from "El Camino SS" when they can guess the closest date (without going over, of course) to when the first US Senator says some total irrelevency like...
"Hey, we need to regulate this, after all, we don't want another Hindenburgh on our hands!"
-or-
"The last thing we need is someone turning this into a bomb, I mean, you know, its got hydrogen in it, so I'd say we don't exactly want any hydrogen bombs around here.... that would be devastating."
Look to the history of Iran, for example. Regarded in the 1950s as an enlightened, prosperous country which had the misfortune to ELECT a president that nationalised their oil industry taking control from the American companies that were taking the oil and paying no tax or reparations for doing so apart from a one time 'prospecting license'.
#1. Why is it "nationalizing" anything appears to be righteous to you socialist nutties? Can't a person or corporation own personal property?
Was it a "prospecting license" or personal property bought by the corporation?
Why is it that governments getting screwed by past administrations can't renegotiate a tax situation from their outside corporations instead of just up and stealing private property? And while were at it... why when something is nationalized, is it always a resource, instead of a car plant? Oh, I remember... because oil is easy for fools to pump and sell, but building products require infrastructure, constant marketing, and skilled technicians. Its all about what makes you money for your regime. Nationalizing anything has never been "for the people." Never will be. It will always be for the boss.
#2. About this whole "enlightened, prosperous" country thing: did they still back in the 50s beat and kill their people with ferocious brutality over petty crimes? I am not totally sure, but I'm prety sure they did. I do know Arabic Nations still have kings, shahs, and emirs, and treat and barter their women like cattle. So you can't sell me that. Oh, and it is also a crime to say, "I'm a Christian, and Jesus is a nice guy," there... so don't sell me that enlightened bullshit. Oh, and you can't travel freely.
The list goes on and on.
Ignorance is bliss, until somebody flies a jetplane into your pretty little towers.....
Its very, very, very sad that you don't have any respect for the dead. Innocents died there. Innocents die in all kinds of wars, you should never, ever defame their name by cheapening their memory. This is regardless of the country or government. Stop justifying killing of any sort.

But I would prefer the name "GameKim" because with all of my Korean friends I know a whole bunch more "Kim" last names than "Park" last names.
It doesn't say, but I can feel that this is a clever play on words with one of the creator's last names.
I love it when someone releases a game system and NEVER talks about the games for it!!!

Manpower is no different. After all, they are America's largest employer (of late, no benefit, no security funds to people who can't afford an education)! JOIN THE MANPOWER TEAM TODAY!
I mean, they get KaZaA in their back yard...
AND THEY HAVE TO PAY WHAT, 5 BAZILLION A MONTH FOR BROADBAND? With a bandwidth cap?
I can already see a whole bunch of Aussies looking up in the sky and moaning like Heston at the end of Planet of the Apes when they find this out.
"Damn you! Damn you all! ARrrrgggghhhh!"
Its a trap! Don't do it! They said they were free! All I wanted was some more Pogues bootlegs and now I've got a black helicopter in my yard!
Oh my God...They're coming in! Aiiiiiiiieeeeee...
(PAUSE- THEN DIALTONE)
Good Luck! (INSERT TV GAME SHOW THEME HERE)
Agreed... Veeeery true.
