Not unless your Gnu can climb or fly up into 100 foot trees it won't. Ever see a Gnu they weight upwards of 600lbs. Has 4 hooves and no opposable thumbs and cannot climb trees let alone river banks.
It might have a chance if it looks like RMS however.
The only correction you need is a more bottom line oriented aproach to dealing with large corporations. If it does not help the bottom line then it's not going to cut it. It all comes down to making the shareholders happy.
In that role Linux makes shareholders happy because they don't have to pay the windows license fees for 1500 boxes that no one sits in front of. Then do it again in 4 years when M$ will only support the newest and greatest yet windows release. Not to mention the 100 MCSE's they would have to hire just to maintain them and keep the virus' and worms out of them.
When Windows can come up with a platform that can without crashing and with an uptime of 6 months or more do all of the following on one cpu, I'll buy it.
Firewall and nat box. Windows file sharing. Appletalk file sharing. DHCP server for a small network. FTP server. Apache web server with php and mod_perl. Runs 2 low volumn web sites. Websites allow client file uploads as large as 100MB. Mysql server. Qmail email server. POP3 server. Email Virus scanning. Network print server. Virus scanning of network connected Windows OS's. SSH server. More cron jobs than I can remember. Unlimited client connections.
All this on a single 300mhz pentium II with 256MB of ram and a single 8GB scsi hard drive. This is the most abused Linux box I have ever created. Longest uptime 6 months. Has never been hacked. Running this setup close to 4 years.
Until Microsoft has a system that can do all this and not cost a literal fortune there is nothing going on but FUD, smoke and mirrors.
Karmflux: I don't know anyone who runs Gnome or KDE on slackware.
Well you just met him. I run KDE and have have always run KDE on slack. After a few bouts with Gnome and fvwm I settled on KDE. Been running slack since the 7.x releases. I could just use the console but since a GOOD web browsing experience requiers the X system I use KDE. On the other hand on all the servers I administer I use the console. I hope this opens the way for a greater integration of kde with the other apps Slackware provides.
Good then you won't mind if it put double D breasts and a thong on the original painting of the Mona Lisa. Sure would make it less boring. I'm sure if DaVinci was alive today he would agree with those changes.

The only time I have ever seen this problem is when something is useing/stealing LOTS of CPU cycles. Try using an anti-virus program on your system and put in a decent firewall. Rookie.
We may repeat ourselves but at lease we know our banking information is not on some arseholes website. Just admit that using IE is dangerous. Replace it now before your bank account is in someone elses hands.
Get a small cheap router with firewall. With the popularity of wireless the wired routers are getting cheaper and cheaper. $35 and you can have a firewall what will help you avoid all those nasty worms and virus' until windows is all cosy with all the updates. I myself would NEVER connect a windows box to the internet directly, yes even with a normal telecom modem.
My inspiron 8200 with a 1.6ghz P4 and a gforce 440 go 32mb video card it is a descent performer and I have to admit the swap code execution in windows Xp sucks and I mean sucks bigtime on this system. I have a the a sytem setup with WinXp pro and Slackware Linux. Sometimes I use it to play games (unreal tournament 2004). When going from the game to the desktop the system take 4 minutes to recover under WinXP (yes I have timed it). The system has 512mb of memory and a 1gb swap under WinXp. Granted the 4200 rpm drives have a little bit to do with this problem. Linux however NEVER EVER takes this long for anything and that includes playing UT 2004. I run it under linux too and the recover time is less than 30 seconds. The linux system only has 512mb of swap. Let me say this one more time Windows XP swap code sucks.

You would start at the california earthquake lab then the modern art museum then hire 10 drugged out hippie architects.

As a further note. The best technology is to use spaminator.com. When you encounter a website that askes for you email address why give it one to send spam too that you have to clean up or leave to rot. Try this..... whateverthehellnameyouwant@spaminator.com. Dumps the email data and address data base every 5 hours. Fun stuff.

Lets see how many different email boxes do you have to manage? I have one. Mozilla handles all of my spam removal needs. Have you needed to have your penis enlarged today. I haven't.
If you have had to spend any more time than a passing glance with a knowing sneer at the virus traffic, and had to spend actual time fixing it your not a very good system admin. Either that or you have no control of the standard programs your users use to access email ie. exchange servers and outlook. If you cannot convice management that you could save the company thousands of dollars if not more than that by using an email client and server system that is impervious to virus' then you are NOT doing your job.
You deserve the frayed nerves and problems. They are brought on by your own lack of being able to deal with management in terms they can understand $$$ and lost productivity.
Me I use Qmail as a server and mozilla as a client. System wide. Do I get complaints? yes. Do the complaints go away with a short explaination. Yes.

Try selling a 20% performance hit to someone running a web server that has been /.'ed.
should this not read ....
1) Apply security patches
2) goto step one till your brain hurts.
That would also be .062 of a square meter for you decimal fanatics.
