When I apply for the loyalty card I can say I live @ 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue NW and my name is Bush and I can still get the discounts, just not by mail ;)

Also left out is this requires at least a 2d barcode to capture all that info, standard 1d barcodes, which is the majority of what I see on printed and emailed coupons cannot hold all that data.

Of course mailed credit card type coupons with a mag stripe can house more data but how much more than they already had to have to get you the card via mail anyway? especially if its a promotion and not sent by a request by the consumer via some website.

I am kind of surprised the article didn't show a picture of a 2d barcode so the consumer could get a better idea of what to look for and question. Next time I see one Ill bring it to the office and scan with a 2d reader out of curiosity.

For giggles I went to ebates and clicked on 6% @ Macy's and it just takes you to the Macy's site where I have no account. If you are shopping online and signing up for an account you would be a moron to assume that the vendor wasn't collecting demographic and other information when you shop there.

I dont see this whole monthly fee thing as an issue. DTV wanted to charge me $200 for their HD DVR PLUS (been a customer for over 10 years) another $10 per month for HD COntent PLUS I LEASE the receiver for another $5 PLUS $5 month 'warranty' or if it breaks, I buy a new one or go without. How is this any different thatn a Bring your own access Tivo?

Now, I talked them into giving me the DVR for nothing but I still pay $15 a month to use it. TiVo is less than that and you can get lifetime service and you can replace the HD when it dies with one off the shelf.

Yeah, but Tivo is a WFA (Wife Friendly Appliance) It has the smallest learning curve next to a TV, even compared with say, DirecTV's HD DVR. Most wives, girlfriends, grandmas etc dont have the time/inclination/geek factor to learn all the nuances of a PS3 or that new XBMC PC you just built.

Tivo didnt just make it easy, they made it brainless. That alone is worth the price of admission.

I never had a regular TiVO, just the one DirecTV used, which was AWESOME, I used the same box for 7 years, only issues were HD's dying which can be replaced by the user, can you do that with a PS3? And when the PS4 comes out will you still be able to stream or will Sony turn it off to free resources for their next gen device like MS did for the original XBox?

BTW, the PS3 is free to play online, actually that is why I bought one.

Its really gonna suck for you when they start charging then I guess.

MS sees that there is a fan need/want for modding the hardware (Since I own it, I should be able to change it, blah, blah) why cant they figure out a way to detected modded CONTENT rather than modded HARDWARE and just not allow a modded game to be played while still allowing the hardware to connect to the network?

Surely this cant be that difficult, can it? It seems they took the easy way out and took some collateral damage with them. Just because you CAN, doesn't mean you SHOULD.

  14. Re:There is a difference between Linux and Photosh on Is Linux Documentation Lacking? · · Score: 1

The problem with all of the above is you are talking about a PS user that has had 'training' via classes, etc. I was under the impression we were talking about a user that had never seen either Linux (or PS for the sake of this discussion) and had to accomplish a task and they were going to use installed documentation. That was the gist of this thread, or so I perceived, apologies if my perception is misguided. Given that scenario and your discussion of Photoshop's manual and notwithstanding the enormous changes in the application since say PS 7 to todays CS versions (which you seem to discount above) the situation is the same. The manual for PS assumes some knowledge of the app based on terminology, etc. Yes, there is a glossary but Linux man pages also point to 'See Also' man pages. Not all that different of a scenario.

If you are in unfamiliar territory and need to know how to do something specific, the PS manual is just as lacking as the Linux man pages and rightfully so, no author can account for all the scenarios a user might run into and some basic needs MIGHT be adressed, I have found the same to be true of many (not all) man pages as well.

What does burn mean? What is the purpose of the Clone tool? How do I use the magic wand or masking or layers? If you think the PS manual is going to help the green user with the above without them having to google a bit I would say you are projecting your own knowledge of the app to a user that knows nothing.
