  1. best linux ever! on Red Hat 9 To Be Released March 31 · · Score: 4, Funny

redhat laboratories releases linux9 advanced server pro champion edition(tm)

redhat laboratories has announced today the future release of 'linux9 advanced server pro champion edition(tm)'. redhat scientists have announced that this will be the most numerically advanced version of linux ever sold. by abandoning older 8.x technology (found on previous releases), redhat has been able to accelerate the versioning capabilities of linux by nearly 10 percent.
numerically advanced versioning technology is an important step in bringing redhat to the enterprise. many enterprise customers, who run high-availability servers on big iron hardware, demand the stability and maturity that can only come from numerically advanced version numbers. moving to linux9 puts redhat in direct competition with sun microsystems' (SUNW) solaris operating system, which has been sporting version 9 release enumeration for over a year.

in other news, redhat has announced that linux9 advanced server pro champion edition(tm) will be distributed in a six dvd set, that includes 2 dvd's containing the basic distribution, and 4 dvd's of pre-compiled packages. additional dvd's supporting non-x86 architectures may also be available for purchase.

  7. Re:misinformation on PowerPC 970 Running at 2.5 GHz · · Score: 5, Funny

the 970 achieves 64bit performance by having 4 on-die 16bit 68040 cpu's and doing hardware instruction translation (in realtime) from ppc to 68000.

in a technology leap, this cpu bypasses intel's hyperthreading technology and proceeds directly to 'ludicrous threading'. this technology allows a thread to finish a task before it was even created.

the 970 incorporates hardware acceleration for microsoft's windows media drm technology. Windows Media Player 9 Series(r): If You Struggle It Only Hurts More(tm).

unlike endothermic cpu's commonly manufactured by intel and perfected by amd, the ppc 970 uses exothermic cmos technology. it therefore requires a constant heat source to avoid freezing.

these chips use ibm's patented plutonium-on-silicon manufacturing process, and as such require a license from the nuclear regulatory commission to own.

you are definitely right about firmware upgrades. there is no reason a player that can read a filesystem should not be able to play any format that can be stored on it (obviously it must have enough horsepower to do so).
a good example is that i have been able to upgrade the firmware on my car mp3 player (Kenwood Music Keg) to play Ogg (and FLAC). apparently it's made by this company and they keep updating the software (it runs linux, you can see the system files on the harddrive) to support more features. very cool to have paid for something and then gain additional functionality at no cost.

    Subject: MicroBSD has Shut Down
    Date: Fri, 21 Feb 2003 06:17:23 -0500

The MicroBSD Project has Shut Down! All works have been removed.

To the OpenBSD developers, There was no intent to modify any copyright in the
CVS tree. We have publically acknowledged the issue and have shut down this
project. We apologize for the inconvience and commotion this has caused the
BSD community. It was never our intent to be at odds with anyone in the
community to start. All MicroBSD code has been removed from our servers. The
web site will go away. The project will cease to exist. This decision is
based on time, efforts involved, the lack of developers, and lack of
interest. I personally do not have the time, nor am I inclined to continue
with a project that has caused this much negativity in the community.

At the suggestions from various repected people in the industry who supported
us, we are sorry. We feel it is not in the best interest of the project to
continue its exitance. To those that opposed us from the start, We will just
    go away as you wish.

Specific developer(s) who committed files with those copyright violations were
planning on rectifying the issues. Instead, I have decided to completely
removed the source tree and all traces of code commited.

There is currently no CVS, cvsweb or downloads available due to a copyright
issue being brought to our attention. We have ceased all development activity
to address the issue and remove any violations from the cvs tree. This was an
unfortunate oversight on our part, and was not intended to violate any
copyright issues. We have taken pain staking measures to be sure to not
modify/violate any copyrights. We assure you this copyright issue, was an
oversight on our part and was not intentional.

In closing we simply ask the the community carry on as it were, and all
person(s) with MicroBSD installed, Please remove the code, and install
OpenBSD. We will be providing locations to the various apsect of code we had
initially committed in features to get the project off the ground before we
continued with our planned unique additons to the BSD community. As of now
there will be no further contributions to the BSD community as a whole. In
closing, Again we apologize for such opversights, and have removed all code.

fool, blast processing was a technology developed by sega exclusively for the the genesis (aka 'megadrive' in europe and asia) which allowed programmers to blast data through the processor. how do you think they got sonic the hedgehog to go that fast?
this amazing technology was unmatched until sony developed the custom "emotion chip", which enabled programming much more emotion into video games. that is why the ps2 is great for doughy-eyed anime games, whereas the xbox is only good for emotionless sports games.

i'm still waiting for someone to come up with a porn-optimized video compression codec. something that is good with skin tones and has good motion-prediction for repetitive back-and forth movements.
